KESUMA investigates Johor bus driver strike over unpaid wages
Initial findings by the Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM) revealed that drivers hesitated to file complaints due to fear of retaliation. 'Many drivers were reluctant to lodge formal complaints due to fear of retaliation. To avoid a repeat of the incident, JTKSM conducted early-morning checks at the premises today and found no further disruptions,' the ministry stated.
KESUMA also discovered that the company breached the Employment (Overtime) Regulations 1980, with drivers logging over 104 overtime hours in one month during inspections on July 17. The same operation saw 32 companies inspected, leading to 34 investigation papers—30 under the Employment Act 1955 and four under Act 446.
The ministry warned employers to adhere to labour laws, particularly regarding lawful salary deductions, with fines up to RM50,000 per violation. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim has directed strict enforcement against non-compliant firms.

Shop supervisor fined for selling items with incorrect Qur'anic texts
KOTA KINABALU (July 24): A shop supervisor was fined RM5,000, in default, seven months' jail by a Magistrate's Court here today for offering items which contained incorrect texts of Al-Qur'an for sale. Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin imposed the sentence on Saadiah Jaidin, 43, after the latter pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 14 (1) of the Printing of Qur'anic Texts Act 1986 (Amendment 2023), punishable under Section 14 (2) of the same Act. The indictment provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. Saadiah admitted to offer for sale 22 frames, including frame watches and wordings of Muhammad and Allah, at a souvenir shop at a hypermall at Jalan Sulaman here on March 25. The court heard that the complainant checked the shop and found those items displayed on the shelves. All the items were seized and investigation revealed that the texts were incorrect and did not follow the correct writings set under the law.

Thai fined for soliciting at reflexology centre
KOTA KINABALU (July 24): A woman from Thailand was fined RM4,000, in default, seven months' jail by a Magistrate's Court here for soliciting for the purpose of prostitution. Miss Phattraraya Noibat pleaded guilty before magistrate Marilyn Kelvin, to committing the offence at a reflexology centre here on July 19. The charge was under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine, or both, upon conviction. The court heard that during a raid at the centre, Phattraraya was found in a room with a man and there was one used condom.

Sandakan corruption case: Two more local authority officers arrested
SANDAKAN: Two more officers from a local authority have been remanded for five days to assist in a bribery investigation involving RM200,000 received from contractors since 2022. The suspects, a man and a woman in their 20s and 30s, allegedly facilitated corruption in exchange for repair work contracts. Magistrate Yong Ching Hong granted the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) remand application at the Sandakan Magistrate's Court. The suspects will be held until July 28. Sources revealed that the pair are believed to have received bribes via bank transfers from contractors handling infrastructure repairs, including footpaths, fences, and mosque rebuilding projects. 'The arrests follow five others remanded yesterday,' a source said. The two were detained between 7 pm and 8 pm last night after giving statements at the MACC office. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and hinted at further detentions. Yesterday, five individuals, including a Public Works Department engineer, were remanded for seven days in connection with the same case. - Bernama
