RTD retiree gets life-changing windfall as 111th BSN SSP millionaire

The Sun20-05-2025
SEREMBAN: A retired civil servant was left stunned after winning RM1 million through Bank Simpanan Nasional's Premium Savings Certificate (BSN SSP) Jutawan programme, a life-changing windfall she never saw coming.
Azizah Kamarudin, 65, from Negeri Sembilan, became the 111th winner from the state to receive the grand prize. She began saving with BSN SSP in 1990 with just RM10 and remained consistent over the years for the sake of her family's future.
The former Road Transport Department officer said she was informed of her win by a BSN representative via phone on May 5 and later verified it at the BSN branch in Senawang.
'Before the call, I had seen the winner announcement on BSN's Facebook page. I noticed a name that matched mine.
'I thought it must be someone else with the same name. But deep down, I hoped it was me,' she told reporters today after receiving a replica cheque for the prize at her home in Seremban Jaya.
It was presented by BSN Negeri Sembilan's chief of Deposit Management, Mohd Ruzaini Mohd Sani, and deputy president of Public Relations and Communications, Christina Geeta Thomas.
The mother of three said she plans to use the winnings to perform umrah with her husband, Baharuddin Md Yusof, 67, during Ramadan next year and save the rest.
'Alhamdulillah, I am grateful for all these blessings. This year, my husband, children and I received the offer to perform hajj together, which was unexpected. Since we performed hajj in 2018, we chose to postpone this time to give way to our children and to care for our grandchildren,' she said.
Azizah added that the BSN SSP savings scheme is an ideal long-term investment, as it not only encourages saving but also offers the chance to win substantial prizes.

Khaled: Bee farming, oyster mushroom planting projects a boon for army families

GEORGE TOWN: A project under the Madani Economy initiative, implemented in military camps nationwide with an allocation of RM10 million, is proving successful in generating additional income for the families of military personnel. It also serves a dual purpose by supporting downstream industry development and food security efforts. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the readiness of the Malaysian Armed Forces does not solely depend on assets and troop training, but also took into account the wellbeing of their families, who are the backbone of the defence community's stability in the country. He cited for example how stingless bee farming and oyster mushroom cultivation projects by the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (2 RAMD) community at the Sungai Ara Camp were helping the families of army personnel productively spend their time — especially since some of the personnel are expected to be deployed on a mission to Lebanon next year. "When we talk about readiness, it is not just about assets, but also about the personnel and their families. We appreciate the contributions and sacrifices of the armed forces and understand that the wellbeing of their families is equally important. "We have been thinking about how to improve the wellbeing of these families. With strategic partners from the Ministry of Higher Education, we have identified certain knowledge areas that can be transferred through the Madani Economy initiative to families within the camps," he said during a working visit to the Sungai Ara Camp here today. Present were the Defence Ministry's secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, Army Chief General Tan Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Western Field Commander Lieutenant General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman and Second Division Commander Major General Datuk Fazal Abdul Rahman. Khaled said the programme, which incorporates smart agriculture elements and technical training, also provided entrepreneurial education to members of the Armed Forces Family Welfare Association (BAKAT) 2 RAMD. The stingless bee honey project is already being marketed, while the oyster mushroom produce is currently in discussions to be marketed through the Malaysian Armed Forces Trading Corporation (Pernama). "Even the spent mushroom blocks can be used as organic fertiliser, making this project not only sustainable but also highly scalable due to the encouraging response we have received. "For the mushroom project, for instance, 20 participants have joined through the Mushroom Activity Centre, and this number is expected to grow if demand increases. If we have the space and facilities, we are ready to expand participation. "This is just the beginning to spark interest and prove that the project can bring real benefits and returns to participants," he added. He said that the stingless bee project in the camp used systematic beekeeping via "log hives" and biotechnology-based rearing techniques developed in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Meanwhile, the oyster mushroom farming employed enclosed mushroom houses with controlled temperature and humidity, ensuring high-quality and consistent yields, supported by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP). Earlier, Khaled also reviewed operational readiness, troop welfare, and evaluated the progress of community development initiatives in the military. He also met with around 300 residents of the Sungai Ara Camp and handed over RM500 in welfare aid to 15 chronic patients from among military personnel and their families stationed in the area.

Westports may potentially replace Sime Darby in upcoming KLCI review

KUALA LUMPUR: Westports Holdings Bhd could potentially replace Sime Darby Bhd in the upcoming FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) review, as its market capitalisation (market cap) ranking has risen to 24th among eligible securities, surpassing the eligibility threshold of the 25th-largest market cap. The next FBM KLCI review announcement is scheduled for Dec 4, 2025 and will be based on closing share prices as of Nov 24, 2025. Any changes to the index constituents will take effect on Dec 22, 2025. CIMB Securities noted that based on closing market data as of July, 10, 2025, Westports has risen to 24th position in market cap among eligible Main Market securities. "The company could potentially be added to the KLCI in the next review, provided it retains a ranking of 25th or higher among eligible securities as of Nov 24, the cut-off date. "Currently, the market cap gap between Westports and Nestlé Malaysia (the 26th-ranked eligible security ) stands at 6.3 per cent. If Westports is added, we believe Sime Darby, which currently has the lowest market cap among existing KLCI constituents, could be removed to make room," it said in a research note today. In addition to meeting the market cap requirement, CIMB Securities noted that securities must have a free float of at least 15 per cent and pass a liquidity screening test to qualify for inclusion in the KLCI. Port operator MMC Port Holdings Bhd has reportedly moved closer to what could be Malaysia's largest initial public offering (IPO) in 13 years, following the submission of a draft prospectus to the Securities Commission, as published on the regulator's website. According to the FTSE Bursa Malaysia Index Series Ground Rules, a newly listed company may qualify for inclusion in the KLCI if its full market cap is at least two per cent of the total market cap of the FBM Emas Index, based on the closing price on its first trading day. "If this condition is met, the stock will be added to the KLCI at the close of its fifth trading day. As of Jul 10 2025, the FBM Emas Index market cap stands at RM1,626.6 billion, implying that an IPO with a market cap of at least RM32.53 billion would meet the fast-entry threshold," said CIMB Securities. It added that potential changes in the KLCI could spur increased interest in stocks likely to be included, driven by passive fund inflows, while stocks at risk of exclusion may face selling pressure. The FTSE and Bursa Malaysia are scheduled to release the preliminary results of the KLCI review on Dec 3, 2025, via a technical notice, one day ahead of the official announcement on Dec 4, 2025. CIMB Securities said any changes to the index constituents would take effect on Dec 24, 2025. Since the last review, YTL Corporation Bhd , YTL Power International Bhd , and Axiata Group Bhd have recorded the largest increases in market cap among KLCI constituents. Conversely, Sime Darby, PPB Group Bhd , and RHB Bank Bhd have registered the most significant declines. As of June 30, 2025, the financial services sector accounted for the largest weighting in the KLCI at 41.1 per cent, followed by the utilities sector at 17.6 per cent, and the telecommunications sector at 9.8 per cent. - Bernama
