Mock drills in all 8 Tripura districts tomorrow with civil defence volunteers, home guards, TSR jawans

Indian Express06-05-2025
Amid tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, mock drills will be held on Wednesday in Tripura's all eight districts, as elsewhere in the country, following a central directive.
The mock drill also comes amid a suggestion by former Border Guard Bangladesh chief ALM Fazlur Rahman, who is known to be close to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, that Bangladesh should occupy the seven Northeast states if India attacks Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters, Tripura Home Secretary Brijesh Pandey said a meeting was held with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday regarding the mock drill to be held across 244 civil defence districts of the country to strengthen civil defence mechanisms in the event of an emergency or a hostile attack.
'Civil defence volunteers, apada mitra, home guards, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans and others will participate in the mock drills. The district disaster management authorities will lead the drill… Our main objective is to test preparedness, check efficacy, ability to coordinate with different civil defence units, and other government departments,' Pandey said.
'We have trained civil defence volunteers in all eight districts. This drill will focus on the air raid siren, sirens for evacuation operations, first aid and medical aid, fire fighting and restoration of disrupted services like drinking water, power, etc… We hope people will cooperate and there is nothing to panic about,' the official said.
West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar said that in Agartala, the mock drill would be conducted at the Umakanta Academy grounds from 3:30 pm to 6 pm. The air raid sirens will be sounded at 4.30 pm and at 5.30 pm, an earthquake-like scenario will be created at IGM Chowmuhani, Chowmuhani Fire Brigade, and GBP Hospital in the Bazar area.
Agartala is among the Indian state capitals closest to the international border and has an integrated check post within the municipality.
Veterans who witnessed the 1971 war have recalled on numerous occasions how Pakistani forces unleashed shelling on the bordering areas, including in Agartala city.
Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides along an 856-km border, parts of which are still unfenced owing to local disputes.
Tripura played a crucial role in the nine-month-long Bangladesh Liberation War against the Pakistani forces, which concluded after the Mukti Bahini led by Sheikh Mujibar Rahman declared independence on March 26, 1971.
A state that then had 15 lakh people, Tripura sheltered nearly 14 lakh East Pakistani refugees, ran at least eight major Muktijoddha (liberation warrior) training camps, and fed and attended to 1.5 million refugees for months with support from the central government.
By the 1960s, Tripura had virtually become one of the headquarters of Bangladeshi liberation planning and activity and a haven for liberation war refugees apart from Bengal in those days, not to mention the historic Agartala conspiracy case involving Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 1963 visit to the Tripura capital and subsequent discussions with then chief minister Sachindra Lal Singha. The visit led to the toppling of then Pakistan president Ayub Khan, added tempo to the rebel activities of the Muktibahini, and eventually played a key role in the birth of an independent Bangladesh.
A Bangladesh government in exile was formed at the Agartala Circuit House on April 10, 1971. Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was also formed in Agartala.
India and Bangladesh officially share friendly relations, though people have of late been taking out border rallies protesting over various issues, especially since the fall of the New Delhi -friendly Sheikh Hasina regime in Dhaka.

Trump hints at 20–25% tariffs on Indian imports, says final decision still pending

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (July 29) that India could face tariff rates as high as 25% on its exports to the United States, but emphasised that a final decision had not yet been made. The remarks come as the two countries work toward resolving longstanding trade disagreements. 'I think so,' Trump responded when asked by reporters aboard Air Force One if the US would impose a 20–25% tariff rate on Indian goods. 'India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country. You just can't do that.' Trump added. The US President made the comments while returning from a five-day trip to Scotland, reiterating his stance that the US must be treated fairly in global trade relationships. The reciprocal tariffs were imposed on April 2, 2025 and were supposed to take effect from July 9, 2025. However, the deadline for the imposition of the import duties was later extended to August 1, 2025. The US has so far reached agreements with the UK, Indonesia, Philippines, European Union and Japan. Citing two Indian government sources, Reuters reported that New Delhi is preparing for the possibility of higher tariffs—likely between 20% and 25%—on select exports as a temporary measure. Instead of offering fresh concessions, India plans to resume comprehensive trade talks in mid-August during the visit of a US delegation. 'Talks are progressing well, and a delegation is expected in Delhi by mid-August,' Reuters quoted one India official as saying, with the news report adding that the US may still issue a tariff letter in a 'worst-case scenario.' US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer echoed the need for further talks during an interview with CNBC, saying, 'We continue to speak with our Indian counterparts, we've always had very constructive discussions with them.' However, he admitted more work is needed: 'We need some more negotiations on that with our Indian friends to see how ambitious they want to be.' 'The thing to understand with India is their trade policy for a very long time has been premised on strongly protecting their domestic market. That's just how they do business,' he noted. 'The president is in a mode of wanting deals that substantially open other markets,' Greer added. 'That they open everything or near everything.'

Parliament Monsoon session: Priyanka, Akhilesh & Kanimozhi target government over Pahalgam attack

NEW DELHI: Charges of lack of "govt accountability" for repeated terror attacks , ceasefire under pressure and govt's refusal to "name" China echoed in LS as Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra , SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and DMK's Kanimozhi led the charge in targeting BJP over the Pahalgam attack and the conflict with Pakistan. Priyanka mocked that Pulwama, Uri, Pathankot terror attacks took place under then home minister Rajnath Singh, who later became the defence minister, while Manipur and Delhi burnt in riots and Pahalgam attack happened under Amit Shah, who continues to be home minister. Akhilesh said Pahalgam happened just like the Pulwama attack, with the same intelligence failure at its heart. He questioned the abrupt ceasefire just when India was on the verge of teaching a lifetime lesson to Pakistan. He attributed the ceasefire to "deep friendship", without naming Modi or Trump. About the killing of three terrorists coinciding with the Parliament debate, Akhilesh asked "why did the encounter happen only yesterday?" Opposition also slammed BJP for using the Pahalgam tragedy for "communal campaign". In a bizarre scene, as Priyanka named the 25 victims of Pahalgam "who were Indian", BJP members shouted they were all Hindus. The speech ended with her naming them, and Congress and BJP benches shouting "Indian" and "Hindu" respectively in loud chorus. tnn

Amit Shah comes to Lok Sabha armed with proof on Pahalgam attackers

NEW DELHI: The three Pakistani terrorists who gunned down 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, in J&K's Pahalgam in front of their horror-struck families, were cornered and killed on Monday in a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and police in Dachigam area on the outskirts of Srinagar, home minister Amit Shah disclosed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah identified the three attackers killed in 'Operation Mahadev' as Suleman alias Faizal Jatt alias Anas alias Usama Markaz; Hamza Afghan; and Jibran, all Pakistanis and affiliated to the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT). Suleman, a top-grade LeT commander and the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, was also involved in the Oct 2024 attack at the Z-Morh construction site in Gagangir, in which six labourers and a local doctor were killed, he said. Both Hamza and Jibran were also 'A-grade' LeT terrorists. The three were identified by family members of two locals arrested on June 22 by NIA - Parvaiz and Bashir. The duo had provided food and shelter to them at their 'dhok (seasonal hut)' some 2km from Baisaran prior to the attack. A source said they were paid around Rs 3,000 by the terrorists. Shah had come to LS armed with conclusive evidence of direct involvement of the three terrorists in the Pahalgam attack as well as their Pakistani roots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 11 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo The ballistic report, he said, matched the cartridges and barrel of the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists, with the spent casings secured from the attack site. Two of the three terrorists were carrying Pakistani voter IDs and the weapons - an M4 carbine and two AK-47s - and chocolates recovered from them further sealed the Pakistani link. The neutralisation of all three Pahalgam attackers marks the culmination of a massive manhunt, which started with Shah's instructions to the forces at a security meeting on April 23 to not allow them to escape to Pakistan. As many as 1,055 eyewitnesses and suspects were questioned by NIA and other agencies over 3,000 hours, and sketches of the terrorists were prepared. Shah said it was on May 22 that human intelligence on presence of the assailants in Dachigam area was received. Technical surveillance was mounted by the Army and Intelligence Bureau to capture 'Ultra' signals of communications between the terrorists and their handlers in Pakistan. "IB, Army and CRPF personnel traversed on foot in cold and high altitudes to receive the signals. On July 22, we got success through sensors, and the location of the terrorists was confirmed. An operation was launched by CRPF and J&K Police under the leadership of 4 Para, and the three terrorists were surrounded and killed," he said.
