Bodies of 2 accident victims swapped, kin find out just before cremation

Meerut: In a major goof-up by health staff at Palwal civil hospital in Haryana, bodies of two Meerut-based traders -- Abhinav Agarwal, 42, and Amit Agarwal, 45 -- who were killed in a road accident in Palwal were allegedly swapped and handed over to the wrong families in UP after postmortem.
A senior health department official at Palwal hospital said an investigation has been initiated.
The "mix up" was first noticed by the family of Abhinav on Tuesday morning after they removed the shroud -- just before the 'Ganga jal' ritual and cremation.
Abhinav's father, Jitendra Agarwal, said the tags must have been exchanged on the wrapped bodies when they received it from govt mortuary. "The staff there insisted not to check the bodies, as they were in bad shape (after the accident).
We would've cremated the wrong person had we not uncovered the face for 'antim darshan (last glimpse)'. Additional trauma amid the grief would've been immense for the two families," he said.
Amit's father, Amarnath Agarwal, confirmed they discovered the error when alerted by Abhinav's family -- also minutes before the last rites. Both families thereafter called off the funeral rituals and transported the respective bodies via ambulances.

Vivek Bajpaee, a relative, said Amit and Abhinav were friends and ran shops selling 'puja' material in Meerut. "They were on their way to Mathura to purchase goods when the accident happened," added Bajpayee.
They were travelling from Meerut to Mathura when their vehicle collided with a trailer truck on the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway on Monday. The collision impact left the vehicle completely damaged and the bodies were taken to the nearest hospital in Palwal.

Now, hidden CCTVs in M'nagar villagesto counter drone rumours, mob attacks

Agra: Authorities in Muzaffarnagar have started installing CCTV cameras, including hidden cameras, in the district's 177 villages following reports of widespread drone-related rumours and mob attacks. Elaborating, SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma said, "We've decided to install CCTV cameras, including hidden cameras, particularly in those villages from where we've received complaints. This will help us to find miscreants behind the rumours." SSP Verma added that special efforts such as community meetings in areas like Mansoorpur, Charthawal, Khatauli, Jansath and Chhapar were being made to build trust among villagers. Announcements through loudspeakers urged people not to believe in or spread rumours, the SSP said, adding that FIRs have been filed in two recent cases, with three arrests made. He confirmed that "Gangster Act" charges will be applied in some of the cases. "Around 20 arrests have been made so far and the crackdown is ongoing. As part of the surveillance, 177 villages have been marked for close monitoring, and Local Intelligence Unit teams, Prantiya Rakshak Dal personnel and village guards are all involved in information gathering exercises." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Muzaffarnagar DM, Umesh Mishra, said, "Misleading information was leading to panic. In certain cases, it seemed to be a deliberate attempt to create unrest. Police have already acted against 20 individuals linked to these disturbances. All drone activity now requires prior official approval, and unauthorised drones are being seized." "People who have information about those who are spreading rumours, can reach us. We'll keep their identity confidential and take strong action against the miscreants," the DM said. CM Yogi Adityanath had earlier warned that those spreading rumours or misusing drones could face action under the stringent Gangster Act or the National Security Act.

Disrespecting Gandhi statue: Kerala high court quashes case against law student

Kochi: High court has quashed the criminal proceedings initiated against a law student who was accused of disrespecting a statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the college campus by placing a pair of sunglasses and a Christmas wreath on it. The bench of Justice V G Arun, while allowing the student's petition to quash the case, observed that though the alleged act is undoubtedly immoral, it cannot be termed illegal in the absence of any law that prohibits or prescribes punishment for such conduct. According to prosecution, the incident happened at a law college in Aluva during preparations for Christmas celebrations in 2023. The student also allegedly commented that "Gandhi is long dead." The act was recorded on video and posted in student WhatsApp groups, which led to complaints being lodged with the college principal. Consequently, apart from the registration of a criminal case, the student was suspended from college for five days and fined Rs 5,000. Edathala police in Aluva registered a case against the student under IPC Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation, with intent to cause riot) and 426 (punishment for mischief). To attract Section 153 IPC, the conduct must be not only wanton or malicious but also unlawful. Similarly, the allegations did not satisfy the ingredients of mischief under Section 426 IPC, as the act did not fall within the statutory definition of mischief. Accepting the petitioner's arguments, HC observed that immoral acts, behaviours considered wrong or unethical according to societal norms or personal moral frameworks, do not necessarily amount to legal offences. The court noted that even the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, does not contain any provision prohibiting the defilement of images or statues of national leaders. HC, however, noted that it is the moral duty of every Indian citizen to respect the freedom fighters who played a crucial role in liberating the country from colonial rule. In its judgment, it quoted the American historian Will Durant on Mahatma Gandhi: "Not since Buddha has India so revered any man. Not since St Francis of Assisi has any life known to history been so marked by gentleness, disinterestedness, simplicity of soul and forgiveness of enemies. "

Woman files sexual abuse case against Infopark employer

1 2 Kochi: A woman arrested by Kochi city police for allegedly attempting to extort money from her former employer — an IT company owner — has lodged an FIR against him for sexual harassment and intimidation. The Infopark police registered the FIR on Tuesday against Venu Gopalakrishnan (50) of Thuthiyoor, Kakkanad, and his employees Jacob, Ebi and Bimalraj. The FIR was registered under sections 351 (2) (intimidation), 79 (insult to a woman's modesty), 74 (criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment) and 3(5) (common intention) and IT Act. The alleged incident, as per the FIR, occurred between Feb 14, 2024 and July 24, 2025. Ernakulam Central police booked the couple on July 28 for the husband's purported bid to extort Rs 30 crore from Gopalakrishnan alleging he had an illicit relationship with his wife. The couple was arrested the following day but granted bail on July 30. The woman filed the sexual harassment complaint against Gopalakrishnan and others following that. In the bail plea filed before Ernakulam chief judicial magistrate, the couple stated the case was falsely foisted as the woman was about to complain as per sexual harassment at workplace act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: 1 Teaspoon of This Before Bed Melts Belly Fat Like Crazy Portal Life Click Here Undo They alleged that Gopalakrishnan, with the help of a director at the company and other staffers, tried to settle the issue. Under the guise of mediation, they were called to a hotel's dining area. Though the employer had offered to apologize, they were arrested, the husband and wife alleged. In the bail plea, the couple alleged that the case was registered with the help of police higher-ups. The court noted in the bail order that the arrest appeared to have been done hurriedly and that after registering the FIR, a trap was seemingly laid to bring the couple to the hotel. The order said that quite unusually, like in NDPS cases, a tahsildar was brought in as a witness. The couple was arrested allegedly with three stamp papers, with the content being suppression of digital content in the form of screenshots, chats, etc. , in possession of the woman, which needs to be seen in the light of the claim of initiation of steps under the POSH Act, the bail order noted. It added that the arrest should have been preceded by an inquiry into what those digital contents were. "In the FIR, it is stated that the threatening conversation of the second accused (husband) is recorded but the remand report does not show that it was collected before the hurried arrest…." the order said. It added whether someone would create documents to prove extortion when he actually intends to extort is also doubtful and that the arrest appears to be done without collecting sufficient materials justifying an arrest. The woman has also approached the court demanding that her mobile phone seized by the police should be subjected to forensic examination to retrieve evidence of her allegations.
