Factory licensing procedures simplified for industrial areas

Time of India6 days ago
New Delhi: A few days after
MCD
approved the proposal in its house meeting to simplify factory licence procedures by eliminating the requirement for applying separately with the civic body and synchronising the fee with annual property tax, the factory licence department issued an order in this regard on Monday.
Applauding the move, the chief minister's office on Tuesday wrote on X, calling it a historic change in the MCD factory licence system. "Now factories operating in industrial areas recognised by GNCTD/DSIIDC will not need to obtain a separate factory licence from MCD. Delhi govt has taken this important decision towards strengthening 'Ease of Living' and 'Ease of Doing Business'. If the factory has MSME Udyam Registration or an Allotment Letter/Lease Deed from GNCTD/DSIIDC, the same document will now be valid as an MCD licence under Section 416/417, DMC Act.
Now there will be no need to obtain a separate licence.... This decision will strengthen the industrial sector of Delhi towards self-reliance and facility-based governance," it stated on X.
The LG office said on X: "The decision to further enable businesses — especially small and medium enterprises — is indeed commendable."

Metaphors are forever

'The trait of a genius is to be able to make good metaphors' Aristotle . The complexity of finding and sustaining, insightful brand differentiators in an era of technologies and innovations, usage of AI and personalization and the emergence of trending products like 'no fragrance' offerings, have made managing brands more challenging than ever before. Metaphors can be useful enablers to strengthen the brand-consumer relationships through the emotional route. A metaphor is one thought expressed in terms of another thought. Brands, while themselves may be associated with metaphors in some cases, they also use metaphors that have a focus on the brand proposition to penetrate deeper into the psyche of consumers. The digital age with the AI Ghibli characters and AR and VR aspects will only make metaphors more creative in the years ahead. Given the power of associations, the human mind is likely to remember metaphors in the long- term memory if they are used appropriately in a context. As brand messages proliferate and consumers have limited time to search for information, metaphors applied by brands can be very useful especially when it comes to the emotional part of branding . Depth of brand metaphors LG air-conditioners had carried an ad during the time they were introduced in India with a proposition that they not only provide cool air but also clean air ( a proposition that was new at that point in time). The ad showed a lady in the family way with a caption suggesting that if the air delivered by the brand was safe for an unborn baby , it must be good enough for consumers. The point to be noted is the blending of the rational proposition with the emotional proposition of using the thought of clean air associated with the offering, being conveyed through the thought of clean air associated with the unborn baby's breathing in the womb of the mother. In this example, the metaphor is deeper and meant to strike at the unconscious psyche of consumers. A brand depending on the target segment and the cultural context can decide on the depth of the metaphor to be used in creating the associations. Incidentally Zaltman, the seasoned researcher well known for his expertise in qualitative marketing research has used metaphors to explore the psyche of consumers recognizing the limitations of using conventional marketing research techniques. Metaphors and culture Metaphors drawn from a cultural context can offer a strong point of differentiation and serve a brand over the long term. Brooke Bond Taj Mahal tea was launched in 1966 as a brand for the elite segment of consumers that a psychographic dimension of Indian elite segment with a fine taste and the mindset, that reflected a western bent of thinking . Zeenat Amman and Malavika Tiwari were the celebrities associated with the brand. The brand wanted to expand the target segment and make it an aspirational offering. The brand had a favorable consumer perception that differentiated the offering as a tea with unique color and aroma. The brand had to get to the Indian roots and wanted a celebrity strongly associated with the Indian culture and someone who also had a western appeal Tabala maestro Zakir Hussain was the chosen celebrity , with the ad of the brand having just the tabla as the background music for the ad. The ad ended with someone saying ' Wah Ustad' and the celebrity responding ' Arey huzoor Taj boliye '. The celebrity was the metaphor with his discipline and rigor being associated with the brand's commitment towards perfecting its tea ('Zakir Hussain : How the Ustaad steeped Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea in timeless equity', exchange 4 media , Dec 16,2024). In 2025 , Taj Mahal relaunched itself with the 'Chai Bansuri' campaign reinforcing the metaphorical association between the tradition of music and tea . The ad showed a large tea pot playing Indian classical music. Taj Mahal was repositioned as the embodiment of perfect blend of India's finest tea and soulful classical music (Ranjeet Kohli, Executive Director ,HUL). Synesthetic metaphors Synesthesia is an enigmatic phenomenon that is not normally experienced by most people. This involves having an extraordinary experience from an ordinary experience. For instance, the taste of tea may also create a pleasant auditory experience. These experiences may involve more than one sensory experience. However synesthetic metaphors (Ning Yu, 2003, Journal of Literary Semiotics) ,offer interesting avenues for brands to create appropriate visualizations and narratives. 'Red Bull gives you wings' explores the association between the brand's energy proposition and the effects of energy in the form of flying. Taste and bodily experiences are linked in this metaphors. The metaphor incidentally got into legal issues because of its claims and the brand had to modify the slogan (the discussion on this aspect is not within the scope of this article). 'Taste the thunder' from Thums Up links taste with sound . Incidentally such metaphors are useful for trending products such as 'no fragrance or no aroma' offerings as consumers may believe that these sensory adds on may be artificially created (Prasad Sangameswaran's 'Who nose the best?', Jun 25, Brand Equity , ET provides more information about the trend). Metaphors and low involvement offerings Metaphors are useful to raise the level of consumer involvement in typically low involvement categories , especially commodities. Sugar is a commodity and there are several variations in a typical retail outlet from unbranded to unprocessed/ organic offerings with a price range that is quite diverse for a commodity , depending on perceived value associated by the target segment . Parry's sugar had carried an ad with a metaphor associated with a cultural informal practice. It is not uncommon to come across the practice of someone informing someone else to tell the telephonic caller that they are unavailable. The practice has been prevalent for years perhaps found in other cultures as well. Parry's ad depicted a child picking up the phone and saying 'Is it Shilpa auntie, my mother asked me to inform you that she is not there if you phone'. The brand is connecting the child's innocence with the purity of its sugar. The ad follows up with a voice over that promises purity in the offering. There are several other ways in which metaphors can be used. Mindsets and metaphors (along with Martech ), may be used by brands to explore several uncharted frontiers in the mind space of its target segment. Third round of DU's admission race begins with option of seat upgrade

New Delhi: The competition for a seat at Delhi University is far from over. The university has opened the third round of undergraduate admissions for the 2025–26 academic session under its Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS), offering multiple pathways for students to secure or improve their placements. This phase introduces several key features, including seat upgradation, mid-entry applications, and category-based admissions. Students who secured seats in the first or second rounds can now reorder their course-college preferences in hopes of obtaining a more preferred option. The window for upgradation and preference modification was open from the evening of Aug 2 and closed at 4.59 pm on Aug 3. The results of upgraded seat allocations will be announced on August 5 at 5 pm. Colleges will then begin the approval process, which will continue until 4.59 pm on August 6. Students allotted upgraded seats must complete the fee payment by August 7, 4.59 pm to confirm their admission. The vacancy list for the next round will be published on August 8 at 5 pm. With this phase, DU is working to make its admission process more accessible and inclusive—providing a second chance to late applicants while also refining seat distribution for those already in the system. Looking back at the second round of seat allocations, a total of 87,335 students were offered placements across various colleges and programmes. This included 24,843 new allocations and 27,314 upgradations, indicating considerable movement from the first list. At the same time, 17,922 candidates chose to freeze their existing seats.
