Veteran Indian cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been left out of the West Zone Duleep Trophy squad. The Test specialists have been ignored in the 15-man squad, which features bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur as the captain.Pujara and Rahane, two batters who were pillars of the Indian Test team in the 2010s, have not played international red-ball cricket in a while. The decision, announced by the West Zone side on August 1, Friday, could be the final nail in the coffin for their Test careers.advertisementPujara is currently commentating on the India vs England Test series, while Ajinkya Rahane is focusing on his YouTube career. The players did play in the Ranji Trophy last season.
The Duleep Trophy has returned to its traditional zonal format a year after being contested as a four-team tournament. Notably, the 2024–25 edition of the tournament featured four teams, namely India A, India B, India C, and India D.Last year, India A were crowned champions of the tournament after they finished at the top of the points table with two wins from three matches, having 12 points to their name. However, the four-team format was given a thumbs down at the recent BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Annual General Meeting. The tournament returns to its original format where six teams from as many zones - Central, East, West, North, South, and North East - are taking part in the tournament. This, in turn, provides more opportunities to the players from their respective zones. Hence, the BCCI has decided to bring back the zonal format to give fair opportunities to all the players.Duleep Trophy: West Zone SquadShardul Thakur (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Aarya Desai, Harvik Desai (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jaymeet Patel, Manan Hingrajia, Saurabh Nawale (wk), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Dharmendra Jadeja, Tushar Deshpande, Arzan Nagwaswalla.- EndsMust Watch

Can Say He Will Keep Doing Well For Indian Cricket...: Gautam Gambhir Cryptically Hints Shubman Gills Captaincy In ODI

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has praised Shubman Gill and the entire team for their thrilling victory over England at The Oval, which helped India draw the five-Test series 2-2. Making his debut as Test captain, Gill delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 754 runs on the tour the second-highest by an Indian batter in a Test series. "I think Gill has done a fabulous job, that's all I can say and he will keep doing well for Indian cricket," Gambhir said upon returning from England on August 5. Gambhir was seen leading the coaching staff's celebrations after Mohammed Siraj dismissed Gus Atkinson, sealing the dramatic win. The head coach emphasized that every player deserves credit for their efforts over the last two months. "We are really happy. I think the boys deserve every bit of it because the way they fought since the last two months in all the five Test matches. They deserve all the plaudits," he stated. Gambhir's focus now shifts to the upcoming T20 Asia Cup 2025, which begins on September 9 in the UAE. India will not play any preparatory series before the tournament, as the Bangladesh tour has been postponed. Meanwhile, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has resumed training after recovering from sports hernia surgery. There is speculation around whether Siraj will make a return to the T20I setup. He hasn't featured in limited-overs cricket for India since the Sri Lanka tour last year and was not included in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad. While Gill finished as the leading run-scorer, Siraj ended the series with the most wickets 23 in total. However, Gambhir pointed out that several players delivered key performances throughout the series. "Look he (Siraj) has been really brilliant, not only him the entire team has performed brilliantly and it is really difficult for me to mention one name. These guys have, be it Shubman, be it Siraj, Jaddu, Washi, Jaiswal, I can stand here and talk for the next 20 mins about the individual performances. I think the boys have been brilliant in the last two months," said the former opener. In IPL 2025, Siraj picked up 16 wickets from 15 matches for the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans, with an average of 32.93 and an economy rate of 9.24.

Sachin Tendulkar stands tall against Jasprit Bumrah trolls; Indian legend says ‘to me that's just a coincidence…'

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar has come in support of Jasprit Bumrah after the Indian pacer was criticised for not playing in the fifth Test against England at the Oval, which the visitors won by mere six runs to draw the series 2-2. Bumrah, who had stated that he would play in just three Tests against England out of five, stuck to his plan due to workload management, and picked up 14 wickets in total. Unfortunately, out of the three that Bumrah played, India lost in two (in Leeds and Lord's). The Manchester Test ended in a draw. Interestingly, in both the Tests that Bumrah played, the 31-year-old took five-wicket hauls in each Tests. With Bumrah skipping the fifth Test, the Indian pacer was slammed for picking and choosing the matches he would play. In a video that went viral on Reddit, Tendulkar pointed out the coincidence of the games that Bumrah played in losing encounters. 'I know people are discussing a number of things – jo Tests khela nahi, voh hum jeete (India won the Tests he didn't play) and all that. "To me that's just a coincidence, to be honest,' Tendulkar said.

Workload management will be crucial to prevent Siraj from getting injured in the future: RP Singh

Mohammed Siraj has bowled 185.3 overs in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar trophy. He picked up 23 wickets and was the leading wicket-taker of the series. Before this, Siraj also managed to play all five Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and pick 20 wickets. While there has been plenty of praise showered on Siraj, a former Indian cricketer did mention that, similar to Bumrah, Siraj's workload too needs to be managed. 'Workload management will be crucial to prevent Siraj from getting injured in the future,' RP Singh said speaking to PTI Basha. 'Fast bowlers are at higher risk of injury when they play too many matches in a short time. His workload should be managed just like we did with Bumrah.' Giving the example of Jasprit Bumrah Singh said, 'It's because of better workload management, Bumrah bowled brilliantly in both ODI and T20 World Cups. 'Siraj is also in the same league. To protect him from injuries, we need to seriously focus on his workload, sooner or later.' 'Siraj was the only bowler who played all five Tests and bowled with full energy and intensity in each match,' noted Singh. 'The last ball of the series, which bowled out the batsman, was one of his top five fastest deliveries in the series.' Siraj delivered a 143 kmph yorker to clean up Gus Atkinson and seal India's win in the fifth Test. It was the fifth-fastest ball he bowled in the series.' 'This shows that he never lacked effort. He focused on bowling with the right line and length and contributed beyond expectations for the team. His fitness and rhythm were excellent throughout,' Singh said. The 39-year-old also mentioned that Siraj's role as a support bowler is one of the many factors why Bumrah is successful. 'Just like batsmen need partnerships, bowlers also prefer bowling in pairs. Bumrah tends to take more wickets and his unique action troubles batters more,' the former left-arm bowler said. 'Siraj's role is to build pressure from his end, and he does that very well. Their partnership has been special and delivered great performances. When Bumrah is not in the team, Siraj automatically becomes our lead fast bowler.'
