Three people are dead, and two others are injured after scaffolding gave way at a large construction site in Texas, authorities said.
"Some type of mishap" caused the scaffolding to become destabilized, causing three Bechtel workers to fall to their deaths at the Port Arthur LNG site in Port Arthur early on Tuesday, April 29, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Facebook.
Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett told CBS affiliate KFDM that the three employees were men ranging in age from 25 to 42, and that they fell an estimated 65-85 feet. Their identities have not been released at this time.
First responders received the call at approximately 2 a.m. local time, according to the sheriff's office. When they arrived at the site, they confirmed that two of the workers had died. The third person later died at the hospital.
Two others who were still on the scaffolding were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, authorities said.

'We are deeply saddened to confirm a tank jump form system incident occurred at elevation on April 29 at the Port Arthur LNG construction site, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries,' Bechtel, a construction and project management company, said in a statement posted on the company's website. 'Our thoughts are with the families and our colleagues affected by this tragic incident.'
The company said that work immediately stopped after the accident and 'all craft professionals' were sent home to spend time with their families. Bechtel is cooperating with the investigation and has initiated its own internal review, they added.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the company offered their condolences and noted that Bechtel has now "suspended work on the site while the incident is investigated." They added, "Bechtel is working with the applicable regulatory agencies and local authorities to investigate the situation and will provide further updates as they become available."

Taylor Mitchell, who used to work for Port Arthur LNG, told KFDM that it was difficult to hear the news of the accident. He explained that the people working on the site are like a 'brotherhood."
'We're not guaranteed our next breath in the morning when we wake up,' Mitchell told KFDM. 'That's up to the good Lord, but especially at work trying to provide for our families. It's really sad and tragic.'

Essex lorry deaths ringleader gets longer sentence

The ringleader of a people-smuggling operation has had his sentence extended after failing to pay compensation to the families of 39 people who lost their lives. The Vietnamese migrants died after suffocating inside an airtight container, found in Grays in Essex, in 23 October 2019. Haulage manager Ronan Hughes, 45, was ordered to pay their families £182,078.90 by a judge in January, as part of a compensation package. Folkstone Magistrates' Court heard he still owed £123,698 and a judge sentenced him to an additional year and four months in prison, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Eleven people were convicted in the UK in connection with the case, in which it was revealed the victims had paid significant sums of money for a "VIP" route into Europe. Hughes was jailed for a total of 20 years at the Old Bailey in February 2021, after pleading guilty to his part in the 39 deaths. He was initially ordered to pay the families compensation of more than £180,000 in 2023. At a hearing in November, Hughes had argued that a property he had built on land belonging to his parents in Ireland was not an available asset for confiscation proceedings. In January, a judge at the Old Bailey in London decided it was and made the confiscation order of £182,078.90, to be paid in compensation. The CPS said Hughes had paid £58,380 so far. Heather Chalk, specialist prosecutor for the CPS, said: "Ronan Hughes led an unscrupulous network of organised criminals that sought to profit from smuggling desperate people. "It is devastating that 39 vulnerable people lost their lives because of their greed and recklessness." The Vietnamese men, women and children paid fees rising to £13,000 for what they believed to be a safe passage to the UK. Their bodies were discovered after the container they were in was transported by ferry from Belgium to Purfleet on the Thames Estuary in Essex. On the day of the discovery, Hughes left Thurrock and boarded a plane back to Ireland, police said. On 20 April 2020, after a European Arrest Warrant was granted, Hughes was extradited to Essex. Kelley Wolf Struggles to Enter Family Home on Instagram Live After Husband Scott Wolf Drops Restraining Order Against Her

Kelley documented her attempt to get into their home alongside police officers on Instagram, which her 16-year-old son Jackson later called "insane"NEED TO KNOW Kelley Wolf recorded her attempts to enter her family's home nearly two weeks after her estranged husband Scott Wolf dropped a restraining order against her A spokesperson from the Summit County Sheriff's Office confirms to PEOPLE that they responded to a 'keep the peace' call on July 29 and escorted Kelley around the home as she attempted to get inside Her 16-year-old son Jackson later responded to her Instagram video, writing, 'This is insane mom what are you doing"Kelley Wolf is documenting her struggle to get inside her family home nearly two weeks after her husband Scott Wolf dropped his restraining order against her. In a video shared on her Instagram on July 29, the author and public speaker — who announced her split from the Party of Five star last month — documented her attempts to enter the Park City, Utah home with police present. Before arriving at the home, Kelley, 48, said she was 'under the impression that I have done everything humanly possible to retrieve some basic items from my home." 'I'm currently about to meet up with a deputy of Summit County who's going to escort me into my home so I can get some money that I have saved,' she claimed, later adding, 'I have just had enough... I'm sick of being treated like I'm crazy." As she exited her car to meet the officers, she expressed that she was unhappy with the public perception of what was happening. 'I have a sassy attitude, my God, but being called things like grandiose, bipolar, schizophrenic, crazy, being banned from places I've been forever is just rude, honestly,' she said. She added that there was a no longer active restraining order as well as 'two involuntary holds.' 'I have to now prove myself and [I] did nothing except ask for a divorce,' she shared as she attempted to enter a security code at the front door. 'I'm sure y'all have seen this before, but wrong lady, because I don't back down.' As she attempted to gain entry through the garage, she recalled her father's advice, saying, 'My dad taught me [to] keep cash. You know, just keep cash. And since I now owe a lot of lovely people a lot of money back, I've never asked for $1 in my life.' Though the garage door opened, she wasn't able to get inside the home. She then claimed she wanted to file for divorce before her estranged husband. 'I just want to get a few things… I tried to do this as peacefully [possible],' she alleged. 'I've called you guys eight times in January saying I didn't feel safe, but [Scott] beat me to the punch. Apparently, I tried to file, but if somebody files before you, they can do a lot of weird stuff.' As she continued to try to find a way into the home, she opened about the toll of being in the public eye. 'We're both famous, just that's the part that sucks…' she said. 'It's embarrassing.' She removed a window screen and attempted to push another window open as the officers called Scott, who did not answer. The video concluded with her saying that she would be 'be right back." In response to the video, her 16-year-old son Jackson wrote in the comment section, 'This is insane mom what are you doing.' PEOPLE has reached out to Scott's rep and attorneys for comment. Police have since confirmed that they were present for the situation in a statement to PEOPLE. A spokesperson from the Summit County Sheriff's Office confirms to PEOPLE that they responded to a 'keep the peace' call on the morning of July 29. 'The original call came in at 7:53 in the morning," the spokesperson says. "The deputy did not meet with them at the residence until 9:45, and the deputy advised that the complainant had left the scene at 11:34.' Police confirm that Kelley indicated she "needed to gather items at the house" and escorted her around as she tried several ways to enter the home. However, Kelley was unsuccessful in her attempts as the spokesperson says, "It appeared that the locks on the house had been changed." Per officials, Kelley 'made some phone calls to family, had some conversations with family [but] still wasn't able to gain access into the house and ultimately left.' She "never made contact with anyone" that might have been in the house and it is not known whether anyone was home at the time. "We didn't have any contact with anyone [who might have been at the residence]. But we were never inside either," the spokesperson says. "We wouldn't know definitively, but we have no reason to believe that there was anyone there." The spokesperson also adds: "The complainant did mention that there was a court order in place. As a standard procedure in these types of cases, our deputy did search for any types of orders that would bar or prohibit the complainant from being at the residence, and they were unable to locate any existing orders." The video comes nearly two weeks after Scott's restraining order against her was dismissed on July 19 amid ongoing divorce proceedings. According to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE, the July 15 temporary stipulated agreement includes provisions around custody, a temporary restraining order, visitation, finances and communication. The 57-year-old actor was granted temporary sole physical custody of their three children Jackson as well as Miller, 12; and Lucy, 11, while Kelley was granted "liberal" supervised visitation with her children. Kelley was allowed supervised parenting time as coordinated by counsel, and three supervised video or phone calls per week with the children during reasonable waking hours. If the court-appointed guardian raises concerns, all parties must reevaluate whether supervision remains necessary. Kelley is also allowed to respond if the children initiate additional contact. The agreement also included a social media gag order too. Neither party may post about one another, their marriage, children or the divorce, nor allow any third party to do so. The ultimate goal, the agreement claimed, is for Kelley to eventually regain unsupervised parenting time. Read the original article on People

Royal Caribbean Cruise Passenger Falls Over Edge of Infinity Pool

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A viral video caught the moment a cruise ship passenger fell over the edge of an infinity pool, hit a railing, and bounced back to land on a narrow strip of guttering. Footage showed the swimmer leaning extremely far over the glass edge before losing balance and toppling onto the pool's guttering below. Had the person fallen over the gutter itself, they would have plummeted several stories to a children's swimming area on a much lower deck. However, the passenger was unharmed, and the Icon of the Seas ship, which is owned by Royal Caribbean, returned as scheduled from a trip to the Bahamas to its home port of Miami, Florida. Why It Matters The near miss at the infinity pool is likely to raise fresh safety fears among passengers and spark security discussions between the cruise liner's bosses. It's also a fresh PR blow for Royal Caribbean, as the clip was shared just days after the same ship saw an onboard stabbing and an overboard fatality. The female staff member was repeatedly stabbed, allegedly by a male co-worker, who then plunged over the side of the ship to his death. The woman was hospitalized and said to be in a stable condition after the attack on Thursday. Another of the company's cruise ships, Navigator of the Seas, was a hit with a sickness outbreak that saw 140 people fall ill earlier this month. What To Know Now, footage of the fall at the infinity pool has gone viral after it was shared by the popular Instagram account @onlyinflorida, where it was viewed tens of thousands of times. Almost 66,000 viewers had liked the video within just one day of it being posted online. The video shows a passenger leaning over the side of the ship's infinity pool. They dangle precipitously over the glass edge of the pool, with only their legs and feet visible, raised clear of the water. The swimmer, who was trying to retrieve their fallen sunglasses, waves a hand in the air behind them before losing their balance and tipping forward over the edge of the pool in a front flip. Their whole body rotates, and their back appears to hit the safety railing on the narrow strip of the pool's gutter below. They then bounce back to safety by landing on the guttering itself. There are several conflicting accounts of the incident. Some media outlets, such as People, describe the swimmer as a man, while others, such as report that it was a woman who fell. Mail Online quoted an unnamed guest who said that the swimmer was subsequently "confined to his room" until the ship docked in Miami. It is also unclear exactly when and where in the voyage the incident took place. Newsweek reached out to Royal Caribbean for clarification, but the company responded with a statement only confirming that the incident took place. A passenger fell over the edge of the infinity pool located on Deck 15 onto the deck below. No other injuries were reported. The 'Icon of the Seas' returned back to its home port in Miami, Florida after the two incidents occured this week." A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement: "A guest accidentally fell onto the pool gutter after reaching over to retrieve their sunglasses. Our crew immediately attended to the guest and fortunately the guest did not experience any injuries." What Happens Next The video shows no sign of slowing down its viral spread as it continues to be shared by viewers online this week.
