Stephon Gilmore's shocking admission on college recruitment

USA Todaya day ago
New England Patriots legend Stephon Gilmore never played a snap on defense until his first year of college football at the University of South Carolina.
Gilmore played at the quarterback position throughout high school, but when he had an opportunity to play in the defensive backfield at camps, he would shut everybody down. Perhaps it was fate's way of letting him know that he was playing in the wrong position.
That didn't stop Steve Spurrier, who was the head coach at South Carolina at the time, from trying to recruit him to play on the offensive side of the ball.
"It was crazy because I played quarterback in high school. I didn't play no defense at all," Gilmore said on The Money Down Podcast. "I was a guy recruited as an athlete. Spurrier recruited me. He was like, 'Man, you should play receiver.' I'm like, 'Man, I don't want to play receiver.' My dad was like, 'Man, you're a corner. Just play corner.' Because I used to go to camps and shut everybody down, and I had never played corner."
Spurrier never gave up on the dream of Gilmore playing on offense and even dialed up a few plays for him. However, once Gilmore started playing cornerback at the collegiate level, he never looked back.
He earned the starting job right out of the gate and developed into one of the best players in the country. That ultimately led to an incredibly successful NFL career with a Super Bowl win, Defensive MVP, two First-Team All-Pro nods and five Pro Bowls.
It's safe to say the move to corner was the right choice.

Three rising SEC powers that could earn College Football Playoff bid in 2025

In the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoffs last year, the Southeastern Conference had three teams vying for a spot in the national championship game. Tennessee joined Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Texas and Oklahoma as the only current SEC programs to reach the CFP since its inception during the 2014-2015 season. That could change in 2025, as several contenders are building strong rosters in preparation for this year's campaign. As the SEC officially opens the regular season in 54 days, when Missouri takes on Central Arkansas, teams across the league will attempt to claw through the brutal conference slate to make their first CFP appearance. Here are the SEC teams that could finish atop the league and earn a bid to this year's playoffs: 1. Texas A&M With quarterback Marcel Reed returning for his sophomore season, Texas A&M is positioned to make noise in the program's second year under head coach Mike Elko. To combat the loss of production at wide receiver, Elko landed talented transfers like former NC State wideout KC Concepcion. The former ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year was ranked as the No. 6 wide receiver in the transfer portal by 247 Sports. Additional commits such as former Mississippi State wideout Mario Craver and the return of running backs Le'Veon Moss and Rueben Owens II will provide Elko's offense with electric playmakers in 2025. The defense is nothing to glance over either, as multiple standout transfers like defensive backs Jordan Shaw (Washington) and Julian Humphrey (Georgia) add tremendously to the Aggies' defensive unit. Texas A&M's schedule is also considerably favorable, besides the three important road tests at Notre Dame, LSU and Texas. If Elko and company can steal one of those difficult road games, the program will be in the race for a potential bid into the CFP this season. 2. South Carolina South Carolina is one of the most underrated teams in the country this season. The Gamecocks return a talented gunslinger in quarterback LaNorris Sellers for his sophomore campaign, after securing the SEC Freshman of the Year (coaches) award and the FWAA (Football Writers Association of America) National Freshman Offensive Player of the Year in 2024. As one of the most feared EDGE rushers in the country, Dylan Stewart's dominance on the gridiron for South Carolina has garnered much attention from NFL scouts. Pro Football Focus projects him to become a top-five pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, as he continues to wreak havoc against opposing offenses. While the stars are aligning for South Carolina's roster this season, the offensive line will need to step up and stay healthy in the upcoming year to protect Sellers, which should keep the defense off the field and give Stewart time to do what he does best. The schedule is brutal for the Gamecocks in 2025, with contests against LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas A&M and Clemson, but the program in Columbia, S.C., could shock the country with multiple upsets. If head coach Shane Beamer can lead his teams to nine wins with a strength of schedule ranked No. 7 per On3 Sports, it is going to be difficult not to put the program in contention for an at-large bid. 3. Ole Miss Rebels Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels have been so close to making the CFP in recent years, but continue to fall just short of obtaining a bid. The program has struggled during the big moments, but this year could be a different story. After putting on a showcase in the Rebels' 28-10 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in 2024, sophomore signal-caller Austin Simmons will take the snaps for Kiffin's fast-tempo offense heading into this year's campaign. Simmons has a cannon for an arm and has displayed true poise in moments where he stepped in for Jaxson Dart last season. Heading into the offseason, the program lost much production on both sides of the ball, but the man known as the master of the transfer portal worked his magic to bring in the No. 3 transfer class in the country, according to On3 Sports. The return of leaders like linebacker Suntarine Perkins and wideout Cayden Lee will be integral this season, as the Rebs travel to Georgia and Oklahoma. However, the schedule is mighty favorable if all the pieces come together like most predict. Ole Miss fans have been anxiously awaiting the moment that Kiffin brings home a national title to Oxford, Miss., but the time for waiting could finally be over in 2025. Clemson football 2026 target, 4-star DL Bryce Perry-Wright announces commitment

The Clemson Tigers and coach Dabo Swinney had long been considered the favorite to land elite four-star defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright in the 2026 recruiting cycle. But on Saturday, Perry-Wright announced he was committing elsewhere. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound lineman is headed to College Station to play for Texas A&M after a late push by the Aggies this week. Advertisement Perry-Wright announced his decision in a live stream on 247Sports' YouTube channel. The Texas Longhorns and Miami Hurricanes were the other finalists for Perry-Wright. It's a disappointing loss for Clemson on the recruiting trail after a hot stretch in June when the Tigers added five commitments: four-star defensive lineman Keshawn Stancil (Clayton, North Carolina), four-star EDGE Dre Quinn (Buford, Georgia), three-star defensive lineman JR Hardrick (South Pittsburg, Tennessee), and four-star offensive linemen Leo Delaney and Carter Scruggs. Perry-Wright is the nation's No. 2 defensive lineman in 247Sports' player ratings for the 2026 class and is ranked as the No. 32 overall recruit. Rivals ranks him the No. 5 lineman and the No. 33 overall recruit. Perry-Wright had received a crystal ball prediction to sign with Clemson in late March, but Rivals recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong logged a prediction on Wednesday that the Peach State native would flip to Texas A&M. Patriots two-time Super Bowl champ makes top-five millennium list

Former New England Patriots two-time Super Bowl champion Asante Samuel made Eric Edholm's top-five list of the best NFL draft values of the millennium at the cornerback position. The list is comprised of players who gave their team the most value based on where they were selected in their respective draft classes. Samuel was a fourth-round pick with the 120th overall selection in the 2003 NFL draft. He was ranked at No. 5 on the list. Advertisement Edholm wrote: "I did hesitate to add Samuel due to the fact that a large chunk of his career production happened outside of New England. The Patriots let him walk as a free agent, receiving only a compensatory pick in return. (That selection was used on the forgettable Tyrone McKenzie, who never played a game for the Pats.) But in the end, Samuel was an invaluable piece for a New England team that won two Super Bowls and played in 14 playoff games during his five seasons in Foxborough." Samuel had 51 career interceptions and made four straight Pro Bowls through an 11-year career in the NFL. He was also known as an elite playoff performer with seven postseason interceptions and four touchdowns. His exceptional NFL career landed him a spot on New England's All-2000s and All-Dynasty teams. Both are worthy accolades for one of the most successful defensive backs in franchise history. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
