Cameroon's Choupo-Moting scores twice to rally Red Bulls past Revolution - Africa

Al-Ahram Weekly17-07-2025
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg both had two of New York's five unanswered goals in the second half and the Red Bulls rallied to beat the New England Revolution 5-3 on Wednesday night.
Leo Campana notched his fifth goal of the season five minutes into the match, scoring unassisted to give New England (6-9-7) the lead. Luca Langoni hit the left post, but the shot bounced off Red Bulls defender Omar Valencia and into the net for an own goal and a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute that carried through halftime.
The Red Bulls (9-8-6) cut it to 2-1 when 22-year-old midfielder Daniel Edelman scored his first goal this season and his third in 87 career appearances — unassisted in the 56th minute. Edelman ignited the second five-goal half in Red Bulls history.
Choupo-Moting scored the equalizer in the 70th minute with assists from Forsberg and 20-year midfielder Ronald Donkor. Forsberg made it 3-2 in the 72nd with an assist from 21-year-old forward Dennis Gjengaar — his first this season.
Choupo-Moting — in his first season in the league — added his 13th goal in the 83rd minute on another assist from Donkor, who has three this season. Forsberg used a penalty kick to score his ninth goal of the season for a 5-2 lead in the 88th.
Campana capped the scoring in the third minute of stoppage time with his sixth goal.
Carlos Coronel finished with five saves for the Red Bulls.
Aljaz Ivacic stopped four shots for the Revolution.
New England beat the visiting Red Bulls 2-1 in March behind two goals from Carles Gil.
The Red Bulls had played four of their last five matches on the road and gone 0-2-3 before extending their unbeaten streak at home to six.
New England has gone 0-5-2 since the start of June.
The Revolution return home to play Orlando City on Saturday. The Red Bulls will host Inter Miami on Saturday.

Prosecutors call for Morocco's Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial - Africa

French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. The woman went to a police station following the encounter alleging rape and was questioned by police. Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player. She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram. On the night in question she said she had travelled to his house in a taxi paid for by Hakimi. She told police Hakimi had started kissing her and making non consensual sexual advances, before raping her, a police source told AFP at the time. She said she managed to break free to text a friend who came to pick her up. Contacted by AFP after Friday's development Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin described the call by prosecutors for a trial as "incomprehensible and senseless in light of the case's elements". "We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. "If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal," she added. "My client welcomes this news with immense relief," Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, told AFP. Hakimi, born in Madrid, came through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He went on to make 73 appearances for the German club. He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then on to PSG in 2021 where he has established himself as an integral part of the team. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup. Chelsea loan defender Sarr back to Strasbourg for upcoming season - World

Premier League side Chelsea loaned teenage defender Mamadou Sarr back to sister club Strasbourg on Friday for the upcoming Ligue 1 season. The French club confirmed the loan move on its website, having sold the highly rated Sarr to Chelsea in June. Strasbourg is owned by the consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital that bought Chelsea in 2022. The 19-year-old Sarr is a France under-20 international. He was a regular last season, playing 27 league games as Alsace-based Strasbourg finished in seventh place to seal a place in the Conference League playoffs. He previously played briefly for Lyon. Chelsea won the Conference League last season and will play in the Champions League after finishing in fourth place in the Premier League. Strasbourg was bought by Chelsea's ownership group, BlueCo, in 2023. Chelsea said Sarr had signed a contract until 2033 but didn't disclose the transfer fee. Strasbourg open its league campaign at Metz on Aug. 17. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Formula One: Norris on top as McLaren dominate opening Hungary practice - Omni sports

Lando Norris topped the times ahead of series leader and team-mate Oscar Piastri as McLaren ruled Friday's opening practice for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris, who is 16 points adrift of Piastri in the drivers' world championship, clocked a best lap in one minute and 16.052 seconds to outpace the Australian by 0.019 seconds on a dry and sunlit day at the Hungaroring. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third ahead of Racing Bulls' impressive rookie Isack Hadjar, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari and rookie Oliver Bearman of Haas. Leclerc was two-tenths adrift of the McLarens and four-tenths clear of Hadjar. Mercedes' rookie Kimi Antonelli was seventh ahead of team-mate George Russell, four-time champion Max Verstappen, who on Thursday confirmed he will stay with Red Bull next year, and Lance Stroll of Aston Martin. The session began in bright and warm conditions, with rain threatening, at the Hungaroring, 20km north of the capital, with Felipe Drugovich among the early starters. Drugovich was called in to replace Aston Martin's two-time champion Fernando Alonso, who was nursing a muscle injury in his back. The Spaniard celebrated his 44th birthday last Tuesday. Norris clocked an early fastest lap in 1:17.63 to prompt Hamilton to ask how he, in eighth place, was a full second adrift and where. "Turns eight and nine"nswered race engineer Riccardo Adami. Ten minutes later, Hamilton – a record eight-time winner in Hungary – complained his "car doesn't feel good" as he dropped to 10th, unable to find a groove in his medium tyres stint. After half an hour, Paul Aron, in for Nico Hulkenberg at Sauber, stopped at Turn 13 having received a 'systems critical alarm'. The team advised him to switch off and his car was pushed off through the barriers. Having spent time on Thursday explaining that he felt the title race would be decided in favour of the driver who makes fewest mistakes, Norris's quickest time of the session was a statement of intent. And given his expertise at the tight and twisty track, Hamilton found a way to improve to climb inside the top five.
