Rangers see Viktoria Plzen threat to Champions League status reduced as deal 'struck' to sell star man

Daily Record4 days ago
It's unlikely Russell Martin will have to plan for Plzen's Pavel Sulc with a deal for him to join Lyon 'agreed'
There will be one less Viktoria Plzen threat for Rangers to worry about with the Czech side reportedly agreeing to sell their star man to Lyon.

Pavel Sulc scored 20 goals for Miroslav Koubek's side last season while laying on another 15 for his teammates.

However, Fabrizio Romano claims a deal worth up to €10m has been struck that will see Sulc sold to the Ligue 1 outfit.

It's expected that the 24-year-old Czech midfielder will depart before Russell Martin 's side face Plzen in their Champions League third qualifying round showdown.
Gers booked their spot with a 3-1 aggregate win over Panathinaikos thanks to Wednesday night's 1-1 draw in Athens.
They welcome the Czech's to Ibrox next Tuesday before heading to Plzen for the return leg a week later.
And their skipper, former Derby County and Watford star Matej Vydra, reckons the pressure is all on the Scottish club, especially with a Europa League safety net for him and his teammates.
"We'll go there to Rangers and give it a go against them for sure.
"It's really great that we're already assured of the Europa League now and we don't have to think about what will happen if we get knocked out.

"We know that the certainty of the group stages is in our hands and we can be a little more relaxed because the pressure is off.
"That could help us.

"I'm incredibly proud of this team.
"We were down twice against Servette – after losing the first leg and then going 1-0 down in Switzerland, so to recover from that shows what we can do.
"The joy in the dressing room after the match was unbelievable, I've probably never experienced anything like it here."

Celtic will be ready for crucial Champions League qualifier, insists Luke McCowan

Celtic will be heading to Kazakhstan or Slovakia in their bid to reach the league stage after being paired with either Kairat Almaty or Slovan Bratislava. The first leg, which is due to take place at Celtic Park, will come four games into the season with Brendan Rodgers' side facing Aberdeen next weekend and then Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup. Winning the play-off will be worth tens of millions of pounds for the club and ensure Celtic have a chance to build on last season's impressive European campaign rather than taking a step back into the Europa League. But McCowan, who netted a late winner against St Mirren on Sunday, is sure they will embrace the challenge. "These players play under massive pressure all the time," the 27-year-old said. "It's what playing at this club takes. "You need to be ready for that pressure, you need to have your chest out, your head high and go and show that you're a Celtic player. "That's what it demands and that's what the manager wants. Pressure in a game hopefully brings out your best qualities. "I'm sure we will be (ready). I mean if you were to ask us if we played it this midweek, I'm sure we'd all be ready. "When those games come around, it's about embracing it and knowing what the challenge is going to be." Celtic reached the knockout phase for the first time in 12 years last season before bowing out to a last-gasp goal against Bayern Munich in Germany. When asked if he felt they belong in the league stage, McCowan said: "I think we showed that last year, but it's about proving it again. There's always a demand for more at this club." The former Dundee midfielder proved the hero on Sunday as Celtic opened their William Hill Premiership title defence with a 1-0 win over St Mirren. The champions hit the frame of the goal three times and had a Callum McGregor strike disallowed for handball as the Buddies looked set to frustrate the title favourites. But substitute McCowan found the bottom corner of the net with a deflected strike in the 87th minute to send Celtic two points ahead of Rangers after the opening weekend of the season. "It's what you're here to do," he said. "You're here to score goals and help the team win games. "You want to create energy, you want to create positivity when you're coming off the bench and I think, at the point we made the changes, they probably needed some fresh legs. That's what the squad's there for. "We had enough chances to go and win probably two football matches, really unlucky with a few hitting the post, obviously a goal chopped off as well. "On another day, you probably come away scoring two or three, maybe more."

A place in the play-offs is up for grabs, with the winner of tie advancing to take on either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge for a coveted place in the league phase. The first leg takes place at Ibrox tonight. And Russell Martin could have his most recent signing to call upon. Finland international Oliver Antman completed a £4million switch from Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, becoming the club's ninth summer signing. It was done just in time to see him added to the squad and he could now make a stunning debut TONIGHT. At this stage of the competition, clubs are able to make two changes to their squad the night before a game takes place. That meant that Rangers could have also added Mikey Moore, who joined on loan from Tottenham last week. But the 17-year old's name does NOT appear in the updated squad list on the Uefa website. Due to the winger's young age, it's thought his registration and international clearance could take longer. Russell Martin doubles down on Rangers squad criticism It was that red tape that prevented him from being involved against Motherwell at the weekend and looks to be same as far as tonight's crunch European clash goes. The player to drop out of the squad is Thelo Aasgaard. The £3.5m recruit from Luton hasn't been able to make his Gers debut yet after sustaining an injury in pre-season More to follow... United remain in the frame and Sesko is said to have told BOTH clubs he would be willing to join them. The Old Trafford club, though, have failed to convince Leipzig that they can cut a deal with no official offer made. And with Leipzig ready to agree terms with Newcastle - paving the way for Alexander Isak to join Liverpool if the champions can up their initial £120m bid - United are ready to look at two alternatives currently based in Amorim's homeland. Amorim and United are looking at both Porto's Spain international Samu Aghehowa and Benfica's Greek star Evangelos Pavlidis. READ MORE ON MAN UTD NO SESK APPEAL Why Man Utd should scrap Sesko transfer to fix a MUCH bigger problem Aghehowa, 21, born in Spain to Nigerian parents, is more similar to the aggressive and physical Sesko. The 6ft 4in striker was previously known as Samu Omorodion before changing his 'official' name in honour of his mother. He scored 27 goals for Porto last term, his first at the club after an effective £30m move from Atletico Madrid, when they acquired 50 per cent of his economic rights. Aghehowa was previously targeted by Chelsea - who had a £34m bid turned down by Atletico 12 months ago - and Newcastle. United would have to buy out the entire rights of the player to comply with Prem and FA rules, with Porto demanding a total fee of £70m. Bruno Fernandes branded 'proper captain' for his miserable trophy 'celebration' after Man Utd win Prem Summer Series How the stats compare Vangelis Pavlidis 2024-25, Benfica Games - 57 Goals - 30 Assists - 13 Samu Aghehowa 2024-25, FC Porto Games - 45 Goals - 27 Assists - 3 But Pavlidis, 26, who has 48 caps for his country, has proved his qualities with a series of impressive Champions League performances in his first year with the Lisbon club after his £17m arrival from Dutch side Willem II Tilburg last summer. The Greek scored 28 goals, nine of them in the Champions League including a hat-trick in the remarkable 5-4 home defeat by Barcelona. Bara were 4-2 down with just 12 minutes left before completing the stunning turnaround. Benfica will ask for £52m for the 6ft 1in striker, which may be a better value deal as he is now coming into his prime. 4 Vangelis Pavlidis scored 30 goals for Benfica last season Credit: Getty
