Kaizer Chiefs new era: New captain, new coaches
Kaizer Chiefs will be appointing a new captain next season following the departure of Yusuf Maart.
Meanwhile, there are some changes to the technical team that have been spotted during Amakhosi's pre-season tour of The Netherlands.
Maart is joining SV Reid.
Meaning, Nasreddine Nabi and Amakhosi management must appoint a new captain.
A couple of natural-born leaders such as Inacio Miguel, Zitha Kwinika and Brandon Petersons names have all been linked to the Chiefs captaincy.
However, Petersen and Kwinika are both not guarenteed starting spots in Nabi's team next season.
Therefore, Miguel is the favourite to take over the Chiefs captaincy. He has lead Amakhosi during their tour of the Netherlands.
Chiefs technical team looks a bit different in Europe.
So, whilst Nabi is still at the helm. One his technical team members were left behind in South Africa when Amakhosi jetted of to The Netherlands. Whilst, a few new coaches were spotted in training.
Strenght and conditioning coach, Majdi Safi has been left at home following links to African giants, Wydad Casablanca. Performance Analyssts – Vaughan Coetzee, Yu-sha Said and Mark Davy are the new technical team members curently working with Amakhosi.
Meanwhile, as reported on The South African, Chiefs want to bring back former head coach Dillon Sheppard to the senior technical team.
'That's the plan. The club is believed to have spoken to the senior technical team about his addition and apparently all parties agreed that it's a good idea, mainly in assisting with the local players whether young or experienced stars. So that's the position right now,' the insider stated on SNL .
Furthermore, he could take up a hybrid coaching role at Chiefs next season.
'The arrangement is that he would be with the senior team during the week, and when, and if the DDC is playing, then he will be with them. You know most of the time coach Vela Khumalo is with the Under-17 national team and in September they are going to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup so coach Sheppard will still be coaching there (in the DDC) as well. Apparently that's the arrangement as things stand,' he added on the same publication.

Desiree Ellis not taking 'tough' Senegal lightly in Wafcon quarter-finals
AFTER opening her national-goal-account against Mali, Desiree Ellis expect Banyana Banyana striker Ronnel Donnelly to show hunger for more. | BackpagePix BANYANA Banyana's spirited performance against Mali in their final Group C match of the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) on Monday did more than send the defending champions to the quarter-finals but it also strengthened coach Desiree Ellis' confidence in her charges. Banyana will host free-scoring Senegal in Saturday's second quarter-final at Honneur Stadium in Oudja, where they played all their group matches. Even though Senegal finished third in Group A behind hosts Morocco and Banyana's southern African neighbours Zambia, Ellis feels the west Africans have done enough to show that they mean business. 'Senegal? They've shown in a very difficult group that they can toughen it up with the best. So things are once again not going to be easy (against them in the quarter-final),' said Ellis. 'I don't think any game has been easy at the Wafcon and that is evidence to the fact almost everyday in the continent you've got teams now playing. 'Malawi they are not even here (in Morocco) but they are busy preparing for the qualifiers elsewhere. 'We have to give it to the federations that have been giving the teams an opportunity,' Ellis added even though her side faced a long list of off field problems before even kicking a ball in Morocco.

In their final game, Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Dutch Eredivisie outfit FC Twente on Wednesday evening. After the match, Monyane shared a statement on the club's website that underscored the deep connection between Kaizer Chiefs and the South African public: 'If Kaizer Chiefs do well, the country does well.' Next Stay Close ✕ For years, it has often been said that Chiefs are so influential they help shape the nation's mood. Reflecting on the defeat, Monyane said: 'We conceded twice in critical phases of the game.' Though disappointed, he remained optimistic about the team's growth. 'That was tough. We worked so hard to get back into the game, and then we conceded a goal so late.' With a philosophical tone, he added: 'You never lose, you always learn.' Chiefs initially struggled against the aggressive, high-pressing approach adopted by FC Twente, who put early pressure on the South African side's defence. However, Amakhosi gradually found their rhythm, with Thabo Cele delivering a strong performance in midfield and Mfundo Vilakazi posing a constant threat on the flank. Vilakazi's lively showing included powerful shots on goal and clear intent to make an impact. Coach Nasreddine Nabi made a series of strategic substitutions at half-time, keeping only a handful of first-half players on the pitch. The new formation continued to show promise, with Zitha Kwinika solid in defence and George Matlou impressing in midfield. Despite the result, Monyane's second-half performance stood out, offering a glimpse of a bright future at his new club. 'I have been received well by the technical team, the players and the staff, arriving from the other side of Soweto,' he said. Monyane described the transition as a 'breath of fresh air' as he begins to embrace a new cultural identity within the Chiefs setup. Through their five friendlies, Chiefs have steadily built on their strengths. Monyane noted significant progress since their opening fixture against Vitesse last week and described the camp as a 'top-top experience' for the squad. With the Toyota Cup on the horizon — where Chiefs will host Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko next weekend at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium — excitement continues to build. 'I feel optimistic,' Monyane concluded, emphasising the club's rich history and passionate fanbase. 'We want to put a smile on our supporters' faces.'

Bittersweet return for Mlambo as PFL Africa era kicks off in Cape Town
The last time Frans Mlambo competed in South Africa was in December 2018 at BRAVE CF 19 where he beat his compatriot Dansheel Moodley via submission in the first round. Photo: BRAVE CF Image: BRAVE CF It's been a 'bittersweet' return home for South Africa's Ireland-based mixed martial artist, Frans Mlambo. For the first time in seven years, Mlambo (15-6) touched down in Cape Town this week ahead of his PFL Africa bantamweight clash against Zimbabwe's unbeaten Simbarashe Hokonya (5-0), set to take place at the Grand Arena at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World on Saturday, 19 July. The fight is part of a historic event as the Professional Fighters League (PFL) officially launches its African franchise, marking a significant milestone in the global promotion's expansion plans. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading The 2025 PFL Africa tournament will feature four events across the continent, showcasing 32 fighters from 15 African countries across four weight divisions. All will be vying for PFL gold and the opportunity to graduate into the PFL's global business model. Saturday's event in Cape Town marks the first round of the bantamweight and heavyweight tournaments, with fighters aiming to secure spots in the semi-finals and finals later this year. This moment has been long anticipated, especially as Africa continues to produce some of the world's top MMA talents. But until now, no major promotion had hosted a large-scale event on the continent, making Saturday's card a landmark occasion for the sport. Despite the occasion, Mlambo — a seasoned veteran of the sport, having competed in top promotions like Bellator, BRAVE CF, and the PFL — admits to feeling conflicted. Frans Mlambo explains the significance of his outfit at the PFL Africa Media day. The attire belonged to his uncle who blessed him with the outfit and he felt it was fitting to wear it on this occasion. Photo: MzansiMMA Image: MzansiMMA 'Man, it's a complicated type of emotion that I have,' Mlambo said during Media Day at the Rockefeller Hotel in Cape Town, speaking to MzansiMMA and Independent Media. 'I've not been back to South Africa since fighting at BRAVE CF 19 in 2018, and now I'm here again with this great opportunity — but at the same time, it's complicated. 'The fact that I'm sitting here with South Africans is a fantastic thing for me. But I'm also standing in the path of people I root for, people I support. At the same time, they're trying to stop me. So it's a weird kind of emotion — I have to win, but in doing so, I need to step on my brother.' Mlambo last competed in South Africa on a memorable night in December 2018, submitting Dansheel Moodely in the first round at BRAVE CF 19. The 34-year-old fighter moved to Ireland at the age of 11, travelling alone to join his mother and brother in Dublin, while his late father and sister remained in South Africa. 'My sister still lives in Johannesburg, and most of the Mlambos are based there. Some of my family are coming to watch me on Saturday, which is so amazing. 'Being away for so long, I haven't interacted with many South Africans. Just hearing the accents brings joy to me — something you guys might take for granted,' said Mlambo. 'That's why this is such a bittersweet moment. I have to fight my people to make myself better.' Mlambo currently trains at SBG Ireland under world-renowned coach John Kavanagh, and over the years has rubbed shoulders with the best in the sport. His bout with Hokonya is one of many intriguing match-ups on a stacked card that also includes former BRAVE CF bantamweight champion Nkosi Ndebele, who headlines the PFL Africa event against Egypt's Mahmoud Atef. 'Nkosi and I were on the same BRAVE CF card in 2018 when he made his debut, and here we are again, chasing the same dream,' said Mlambo. 'Not just him — other South Africans, and Simba too. Yes, he's Zimbabwean-born, but we're all brothers competing in the same weight class.' The PFL Africa event forms part of a broader fight night, with the Cape Town card serving as the undercard for the PFL Champions Series: Road to Dubai, headlined by PFL middleweight champion Johnny Eblen (USA) and Costello Van Steenis (Spain). The tournament will continue on 9 August at Carnival City in Johannesburg, where the first rounds of the welterweight and featherweight knockout brackets will unfold.
