
School Education Department to step up competitive exam coaching in Coimbatore
Coaching is offered for 20 exams across streams such as Engineering, Law, Design, Indian Maritime University (IMU), Arts, Science, Commerce, Hotel Management, Paramedical, Architecture, Teaching, and Education, for students from Classes IX to XII. Each month, eight sessions are held with changing subjects. Topics are introduced at a basic level in Class IX and become progressively detailed by Class XII.
An official from the School Education Department said that, in addition to the existing coaching modules, the department is planning to conduct weekly special classes on Saturdays for students who express interest in focused exam preparation. 'Teachers will be trained in specific subjects, and coaching is planned to be conducted at 15 centres — one in each block — to improve student performance,' the official said.
Currently, two hours of weekly coaching are held in high-tech labs on working days using Naan Mudhalvan video materials, followed by explanations. Periodic tests are conducted, and student performance is tracked through the Education Management Information System (EMIS).
In the previous academic year, 95 students from government schools appeared for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), 262 for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, 13 cleared JEE Advanced, 21 wrote the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) entrance exam, two appeared for the National Institute of Design (NID) entrance test, three for the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) All India Selection Test (AIST), and seven for the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE). The government covered the exam fees, spending ₹10 lakh in total.
For students who secure admission to central government institutions or other premier colleges, the State government either bears the cost or facilitates sponsorship, the official added.
On Friday, four students who cleared competitive exams and secured admissions were felicitated by Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar. K. Brindha from Kinathukadavu Government Higher Secondary School cleared NCHM JEE and secured admission to the Institute of Hotel Management, Chennai. S. Dhanushasri, M. Sujatha, and Layadharshini cleared the FDDI AIST and are awaiting allotment.

41 lakh students trained under Naan Mudhalvan scheme: Govt
Chennai: A total of 41.38lakh students and 1lakh lecturers across Tamil Nadu received training under the 'Naan Mudhalvan' scheme, one of the state's largest skilling initiatives aimed at improving youth employability, said the state govt. A new phase of the SCOOT (Study, Connect, Observe, Orient, and Transform) programme will send students from physics, chemistry, and allied fields for hands-on exposure abroad. The state is now gearing up to expand the scheme across new sectors, including AI, data science, and global job pathways. The state special programme implementation department officials said they are adding advanced modules, boosting foreign collaborations, and launching residential coaching programmes for competitive exams. To improve global job opportunities, the govt has tied up with institutions abroad. "Select students will be sent for internships and in-person training in countries such as South Korea, Japan, and the UK, based on partnerships with universities and industry bodies," said an official. Under international collaboration, 25 students have already been sent for in-person training at Durham University in the UK, while 15 students underwent technical training in Japan. In 2025, six students from chemistry and physics backgrounds also completed internships at Pusan National University and Gachon University in South Korea. So far, more than 1.02lakh students have secured jobs through pooled campus placements and job fairs. As part of higher education support, 77,752 students were helped through the 'Uyarvukku Padi' scheme, while 'Kalloori Kanavu 2024' benefited 1.87 lakh students since its inception in 2022 — including 81,149 students in 2025-26 alone.

Lokesh directs officials to launch skill portal by September 1
Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) and IT Nara Lokesh on Friday directed officials of the Skill Development Corporation to launch the proposed 'Skill Portal', a platform to connect the youth and industries, by September 1. Addressing a review meeting, Mr. Lokesh said the portal should include skill assessments and provide the latest information on vacancies in companies to help the youth enhance their skills accordingly and secure employment. He wanted the officials to coordinate with various departments to gather comprehensive data. The Minister asked the officials to organise job fairs every three months in each assembly constituency and prepare an action plan for effective functioning of the district employment offices. Interacting with officials of the Overseas Manpower Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (OMCAP), the Minister directed them to hold discussions with embassies of various countries to make overseas jobs and employment opportunities more accessible. The officials said the State had been granted Central funds to the tune of ₹600 crore for development of Industrial Training Institutes under the 'Hub and Spoke' initiative, following the Minister's recent visit to Delhi. The officials told him that 5,00,965 students had enrolled in the first year of Intermediate education in the current academic year. The Minister said every student should be enrolled in either Intermediate or a vocational education courses after Class 10. 'No student should be allowed to remain at home,' he said categorically. He said the officials should track the enrolment status of each student and coordinate with the School Education Department. Briefing the Minister, the officials said the Ákshara Andhra', a literacy initiative aimed at eradicating illiteracy, would be launched across the State on August 7. 'After seven years, Mega DSC 2025 was conducted smoothly over 23 days to recruit 16,347 teachers,' he posted on 'X'. He said that 3.36 lakh candidates had submitted 5.77 lakh applications, with 92.9 % attendance. The Minister said that provisions like SC sub-categorisation and 3% sports quota ensured equity and inclusion and that the initial keys has been released.
