Wizz Air boss hit with £60 fine by own staff for breaking hand luggage rules
Yvonne Moynihan took the reins of the Wizz Air's UK wing and sat down with Mirror to talk about the role - including the time she fell foul of her airline's hand luggage rules The new UK boss of Wizz Air was stung by the airline's stringent baggage policy. The new managing director of the Hungarian airline's UK wing, Yvonne Moynihan, admitted that she got caught trying to bring an oversized bag onto a Wizz Air flight. It seems that the strict budget airline rules that play such a big part in the average Brits' holiday experience also apply to the people running the show. "I got overcharged by Wizz Air a few weeks ago for my bag not fitting in the thing. €70 (£60)," she told the Mirror. Do you have a travel story to share? Email webtravel@ At the start of this month, Ms Moynihan took the reins of the Hungarian airline's UK wing, succeeding Marion Geoffroy as managing director of Wizz Air UK. She sat down with the Mirror at the beginning of her tenure to discuss a wide range of topics, including her plans for the airline's future, new routes launching later this year, and Wizz's ambition to keep pushing forward as the world's greenest major airline (in terms of CO2/e emitted per passenger). One of the issues of the day was hand luggage, following a major EU ruling earlier this month. While not yet law, the legislative change means that airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, which currently charge significant sums for a second bag, will likely be unable to demand big fees for an additional cabin bag in the future. "We highly object, along with the other airlines. It essentially erodes consumer choice," Ms Moynihan said of the ruling. The new budget airline boss echoed the words of Ourania Georgoutsakou, managing director of Airlines For Europe, likening the new regime to "going to the cinema and being forced to have Coke and popcorn with your ticket". Ms Moynihan is strongly in favour of airlines being able to charge passengers for oversized hand luggage, despite having recently fallen victim to Wizz Air's own policy. If your cabin bag is larger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm and you haven't paid for Wizz Priority, you will likely be charged at the gate to check it into the hold, which will cost more than if you had pre-booked a larger bag. The full bag rules and charges for Wizz Air can be found on its website. Ms Moynihan predicted that a watered-down version of the EU legislation would become law at some point in the future. When it does, Wizz Air and other airlines like it are likely to bump up the fees they can charge for luggage to cover the shortfall. Right now, Wizz Air makes just shy of 50% of its income from ancillary aspects of the journey, such as charging for seat reservations and bags. "I always look at Wizz Air flights to see who is wearing backpacks, and I see that people are travelling light. Passengers are happy to travel light. If you're going to force a passenger now, we're going to change the price," Ms Moynihan said. She also warned that many of the airline's planes simply would not fit the extra bags that the law change would allow for. "We have 239 passengers onboard, we can't fit 239 pieces of luggage. The problem is at the gate, you're going to have to take luggage from them," she said. Aside from potential changes to hand luggage rules, there is a lot happening at the airline. Not least, new routes. As of last month, Wizz Air is flying four times a week from Gatwick to Wroclaw in Poland. It will be flying from the same London airport to Warsaw in Poland and Medina in Saudi Arabia from the beginning of August. Over in the West Midlands, Birmingham is now linked up with Rome three times a week as of June, with new flights to Sibiu and Suceava in Romania later this year.

He explained: "These are great iPhones but if you have an iPhone 15 Pro in your pocket there's probably not enough here to warrant an upgrade especially as those 2023 devices will also get Apple Intelligence via a software update. "That said, if you haven't upgraded in a while and want the best iPhone of the bunch then the 16 Pro and Pro Max are top-notch call makers that will be contenders for phone of the year." "The A18 Pro chip makes every task feel effortless, whether it's multitasking, gaming, or editing high-resolution videos. Everything runs incredibly smoothly, and the efficiency improvements are noticeable, especially in battery life." However, another shopper noted: "While Apple Intelligence shows promise, it feels a bit unpolished in its current state. Some features are hit-or-miss, and I occasionally experience lag when using more intensive AI features. The A18 Pro chip is blazing fast for most tasks, but I've noticed it can get quite warm during extended gaming sessions." On the flip side, a five-star reviewer commented: "The iPhone 16 Pro max has been amazing so far, the display is outstanding with many colours which makes it good for watching videos or viewing high quality photos. "The battery seems to last for a few days without having to recharge it but I'm not constantly on it so not sure how long it will last if you'll be on it more frequently than me. The phone is easy to use and navigate to find what I need." To buy the iPhone 16 Pro Max on a monthly deal, click HERE. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! 'We've tested hundreds of 2025's best cars and one near-faultless vehicle is our favourite'
The car was named the best overall model after a panel of judges put hundreds of cars through their paces A team of seasoned car reviewers have crowned their top pick of 2025's range of vehicles after rigorous testing. Auto Express, a leading motoring publication, has put a plethora of cars to the test to identify the crème de la crème currently on offer in the UK. The electric Skoda Elroq emerged as the victor, with the magazine's experts impressed by its performance both on public roads and the racing circuit. In their assessment of the Elroq, Auto Express commended the vehicle for showcasing the best of Skoda's attributes, including cost-effectiveness and superior interior design. The review highlighted that the Elroq not only builds upon Skoda's recent reputation but also demonstrates the brand's relentless advancement amids the transition to electric vehicles, reports the Mirror. They concluded: "In the end, however, we chose the car which, try as we might, we struggled to find any obvious faults with - and that all-round strength sealed its position." They added: "Everything we've come to expect and love from a Skoda is right here, with value for money at the forefront of everything it does. This is an EV that starts from not much over £30,000 yet feels like a car that's sized a class above most alternatives at that price point. "The good news for the Elroq is that there's loads more to recommend. If Skoda wanted a model to showcase what its brand is all about, the Elroq shouts those qualities louder than any other. It's as close to faultless as a family car can be, and that's why it's a deserving winner." Skoda's successes aren't just limited to the new car market; they're making waves in the second-hand sector too. The marque's burgeoning appeal has caught the attention of motoring expert Mike Brewer. Speaking to Car Dealer Magazine, the Wheeler Dealers host had high praise for the Skoda Yeti: "If you're looking for a bit more space for the family and you need to carry all that kit and caboodle around, then another recommendation would be the Skoda Yeti. "Now this is a really strong car. It's got a really good VW platform that sits underneath it. They are reliable, they are rough and tough. You can bash them round. They've got hard plastics on the inside. "If they get stained on the seats, they clean up really well. Think about those littleuns' in the back drinking their fruit juice. These cars are really hardy and that's why I'd recommend a Skoda Yeti. "And Skoda aren't like they used to be. They really are great cars today."
