Florida A&M reportedly finalizing deal with 1993 Heisman winner Charlie Ward to become men's basketball coach
According to ESPN, Florida A&M is finishing a deal to hire the ex-Florida State star as its next men's basketball coach. Ward recently served as an assistant coach for USA Basketball during the 2025 Nike Hoops Summit.

The 54-year-old won the 1993 Heisman Trophy while he was a two-sport star with the Seminoles. Ward played guard for the FSU basketball team while also serving as the football team's quarterback. In 1993, he completed nearly 70% of his passes for 3,032 yards and 27 TDs with just four interceptions. He also rushed for 339 yards and four scores.
The Seminoles went 12-1 that season and beat Nebraska 18-16 in the Orange Bowl to win the national title after finishing first in the final AP Top 25 of the season. FSU's only loss came to Notre Dame in November when the Fighting Irish won 31-24 in a matchup of the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the country.
Ward chose basketball over the NFL, however, and was a first-round pick of the Knicks in the 1994 NBA Draft. He played for nine seasons with the franchise before ending his career with the Spurs and Rockets. Ward averaged 6.5 points per game over 580 appearances with the Knicks and shot 41% from the field.

Ward is being lined up to replace Patrick Crarey II after Crarey left the Rattlers to coach Grambling less than a week ago. Crarey was with the school for just one season as the Rattlers went 14-17 overall and 10-8 in the SWAC with a win in the conference tournament.
That record was an eight-game improvement over the 2023-24 season, when Florida A&M went 6-23 and just 4-14 in conference play. The Rattlers haven't had a winning season since making the NCAA tournament as a No. 16 seed in 2007 as a member of the MEAC.

What that looks like remains to be seen, but building on his total yards production certainly falls into that category. That's true both as a runner and also as a pass catcher, an area where Love has spent plenty of time developing during the offseason. Advertisement Should Love finish the season on the first-team it would be an achievement not often seen at Notre Dame. In fact, the last running back to earn a first-team All-America honor was Allen Pinkett back in 1985. Pinkett also earned All-America honors in 1983. Running back Vagas Ferguson was Notre Dame's last consensus All-American, earning that honor in 1979. Notre Dame has had backs like Audric Estime, Jerome Bettis, Reggie Brooks and Autry Denson earn second or third team honors, but it has been decades since an Irish back earned first-team honors. Two Notre Dame opponents also made the first-team squad from Walter Camp. Miami (Fla.) offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa and Boise State offensive lineman Kage Casey were also named to the first team on offense. NC State tight end Justin Jolly and Texas A&M guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams were named to the second-team squad. Former Texas A&M star outfielder named to the MLB All-Star Futures game
It seems like just yesterday that former Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery burst onto the scene, hitting a home run in his first Aggie at-bat and instantly becoming a fan favorite for the 2024 season. Despite a late-season ankle injury that effectively ended his college career, he was still selected with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. Before even taking a swing, Montgomery was traded to the Chicago White Sox. He began his professional career in Single-A with Kannapolis, and after just 18 games, he was promoted to the High-A Winston-Salem Dash, where he has been a solid contributor for the past two months. Montgomery currently sports a slash line of .263/.336/.459, with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. To continue climbing the ranks, he'll need to make further progress and reduce his strikeouts (48), but he's trending in the right direction, and his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. Big Ten squad to host two HBCUs this season
Two HBCUs will step onto a major stage this college basketball season as Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman both appear on Indiana University's 2025–26 non-conference schedule. Each team will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the Big Ten powerhouse early in the season. Alabama A&M begins new era Alabama A&M opens Indiana's season on November 5. The Bulldogs are entering a new chapter under head coach Dontae Jackson, who takes over after a successful stint at Grambling State. Last season, A&M finished 10–22, but Jackson brings a reputation for building tough, defensive teams.
