AHMEDABAD, (India): More than 200 victims of the Air India jet crash have been identified through DNA testing, Indian authorities said Wednesday (June 18), inching towards ending an agonising wait for relatives.
There was one survivor out of 242 passengers and crew on board the London-bound plane on Thursday when it slammed into a residential area of Ahmedabad, killing at least 38 people on the ground.
Distraught relatives have been providing DNA samples to help identify their loved ones, in a painstakingly slow process.
"As of 2 pm, 202 DNA (samples) have been matched," Harsh Sanghavi, home minister of Ahmedabad's Gujarat state, wrote on X.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner erupted into a fireball when it crashed moments after takeoff, with witnesses reporting seeing badly burnt bodies and scattered remains.
Indian authorities are yet to announce the cause of the crash and investigators from Britain and the United States have joined the probe.
Investigators are aiming to retrieve vital information from both black boxes recovered from the site -- the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder.
India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau upgraded a laboratory this year where black boxes can be analysed.
Following the crash, the civil aviation regulator ordered inspections of Air India's Dreamliners.
Initial checks on the fleet "did not reveal any major safety concerns", the regulator said late Tuesday.
"The aircraft and associated maintenance systems were found to be compliant with existing safety standards," it said. - AFP

Four dead, 38 missing after ferry sinks near Bali, agency says

Family members wait for updates on the search operation for 38 people who were missing after a ferry sank off the popular Indonesian resort island of Bali, at Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi, East Java on July 3, 2025. - AFP JAKARTA: Four people died, 38 were missing and 23 survived after a ferry carrying 65 people sank near the Indonesian island of Bali, the country's Search and Rescue agency said on Thursday (July 3). The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving East Java province's Banyuwangi port on its way to Bali late on Wednesday, the agency said on Thursday. The boat was carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members, as well as 22 vehicles, the agency said. A search for the missing is underway although it is being hampered by strong currents and winds, the agency added. Ferries are a common mode of transport in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, and accidents are common as lax safety standards often allow vessels to be overloaded without adequate life-saving equipment. A small ferry capsized in 2023 near Indonesia's Sulawesi island, killing at least 15 people. - Reuters

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the couple, aged 34, was detained at 8 pm by a team from the D7 (Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies) division of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters. Preliminary investigations revealed that the husband acted as the content creator, promoting and selling pornographic videos featuring his wife and their clients, while also managing a prostitution ring to generate income. 'His wife acted as the prostitute, playing the lead role in the videos. They earned up to RM6,400 a week,' he said. 'They targeted clients via the X platform to sell their pornographic videos, while prostitution activities were coordinated through Telegram,' he said in a statement yesterday. Rusdi added that their fees ranged from RM450 to RM800 at a four-star hotel, while pornographic videos were priced at RM50 and RM150. 'The couple has been remanded for three days until July 4. The case is being investigated under Sections 372(1), 372B and 372A of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Two children among five injured in Russia's air attack on Odesa, Ukraine says

Press service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Odesa region/Handout via REUTERS (Reuters) -Five people were injured, including a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, in a Russian attack on the southern Ukraine port of Odesa overnight, Ukrainian authorities said on Thursday. A multi-storey residential building and other civilian infrastructure were damaged, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on the Telegram messaging app. Six apartments were completely destroyed, another 36 were partially damaged, he said. "The children, who were poisoned by combustion products, were hospitalized," Kiper said. The other three injured people, all adults, received medical aid on the site. The full scale of the attack was not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Russia about the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes during the war that Russia launched against Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine posted on its Facebook page photos showing rescuers carrying children in the dark out of a multi-storey apartment building on fire and firefighters fighting the blaze. The Service said that 50 people were evacuated from the building. The fire has been extinguished since, Kiper said. (Reporting by Lidia Kelly in Warsaw; Editing by Raju Gopalakrishnan)
