Nashik police urge women, girls to call up Damini squad about any safety concern

Nashik: Women should not shy away from dialling the Damini Squad helpline numbers if faced with untoward incidents requiring police intervention, the city police said on Thursday.

Aimed at making the city safe for women and girls, the all-women Damini Squad is a 42-member police unit which takes strict action against eve-teasers and troublemakers on the streets, officers said.
From Jan 1 this year, the squad has filed cases against 4,736 troublemakers under the Maharashtra Police Act, in addition to stop-and-search operations at 1,120 deserted spots and 860 surveillance visits to schools and colleges.
These actions were taken under the guidance of CP Sandeep Karnik and DCP Monica Raut.
Damini squad members work in the four units of Sarkarwada, Panchavati, Ambad and Nashik Road.
Senior officers said constables Mamta Dhoom and Komal Avhad detained a Bangladeshi woman from Mumbai Naka area. Additionally, squad members Jyoti Pawar and Sonali Bagul chased and arrested two people escaping with a stolen water meter. Another constable SD Walunj intervened in a street fight in the city's Kalanagar area and while frisking a minor, found a knife in his possession.
Women and girls should be able to move freely across the city and if met with any troubling incident of eve-teasing or other issues, they should contact the police on '112' or use helpline numbers: 9403165830 for Panchavati division, 9403165674 for Sarkarwada division, 9404842206 for Ambad division and 9403165193 for Nashik Road division, officers said.
These numbers can be dialled even after 10pm, police officers said, adding that the calls are connected to the police control room, from where help is rushed to the caller's location within minutes.

Nashik: The city police arrested two people after two swords were found in their possession. Those arrested are identified as Rakesh Umesh Thorat of Shirpur, Dhule district, and Gautam Mangalsingh Khairnar, a resident of Nandurbar. The Mumbai Naka police registered a case against them under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Police Act and Indian Arms Act. The police said under the guidance of CP Sandeep Karnik, DCP (Crime) Prashant Bacchav and ACP (Crime) Sandeep Mitke, the central crime branch personnel were tracing people who were carrying weapons to terrorise others. On Thursday, on the instructions of senior PI Anchal Mudgal, officials and personnel of the Central Crime Branch were patrolling the Upnagar and Mumbai Naka areas. Constable Prajit Thakur received information that some people were carrying sharp weapons in a four-wheeler near Barkat Corner under the Mumbai Naka police station. PI Mudgal immediately formed a team, who detained the two suspects and, on checking their vehicle, found a steel sword and two choppers. The police confiscated the four-wheeler and the three weapons, all worth over Rs15 lakh.

Kalyan: Khadakpada police have arrested a 19-year-old school dropout from Kalyan, who posted reels of himself in a fake police uniform and brandishing an illegal country-made pistol. Police identified the accused as Sunny Pal. "On receiving specific information about a fake police officer on social media, a police team tracked him down in Kalyan's Gauripada area and arrested him," said Kalyanji Ghete, assistant commissioner of police, Kalyan zone of Thane police. Police seized the police uniform and the pistol from the teenager's home in Milind Nagar. Motihari: A Bangladeshi national, Syed Iqbal Ahmed (43), who was trying to illegally enter into India through Raxaul integrated checkpost (ICP) on India-Nepal border, was arrested on Friday near Maitri bridge by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). On Saturday, Ahmed was produced before the SDJM, Raxaul, and remanded to jail custody under Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Acting commandant of 47 battalion of SSB, Sanjay Rawat, said the SSB jawan posted at Maitri bridge found that the Bangladeshi national did not have a valid visa for India. He had a Bangladesh passport and visa for Nepal only. He had come to Kathmandu from Dhaka by air last week. During search, 50 US dollars, Bangladeshi and Nepal currencies were recovered from his possession. During investigation, it was revealed that he had plans to enter different cities of the country after entering through Nepal. "This activity is being considered extremely serious and suspicious from the point of view of national security," Rawat said. The Immigration sources said from April 26 to July 4, four Chinese, one each US, Canadian, South Korean, Iraq and Bangladeshi nationals had attempted to enter into India without valid documents through Raxaul. However, they were arrested and jailed. After 'Operation Sindoor' there is a high alert in the border area and a temporary checkpost has recently been set up by the SSB at the Maitri bridge before the ICP. According to intelligence department sources, information has been received about the arrival of seven Pakistani and Bangladeshi associated with the Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, in Nepal and all these suspects have been active near the India-Nepal border since the first week of June 2025.
