Irby's season-high 4 hits, Norby's strong outing carry ECU past Florida 11-6 in Conway Regional
East Carolina (34-25) will play No. 13 national seed Coastal Carolina or Fairfield in a winner's game Saturday. The Gators (38-21) will play the loser in an elimination game.
The Pirates tagged Florida ace Liam Peterson for four quick runs on their way to a 9-0 lead in their seventh straight regional. Irby doubled in a run in the fourth, hit his 10th homer in the sixth and singled in another run to make it 11-2 in the seventh.
The Pirates, the No. 3 regional seed, knocked Peterson (8-4) out of the game with one out and the bases loaded in the second inning. Peterson gave up four runs, two earned, in his shortest outing of the season other than a seven-pitch start cut short because of a weather delay on May 2 at South Carolina.
The Gators, in their 17th straight regional, broke through against Norby in the fourth with Brendan Lawson leading off with a homer and Blake Cyr connecting with two outs to make it 9-2.
Norby (8-5) allowed six hits, struck out 10 and walked none. He threw a career-high 116 pitches before giving way to Jake Hunter, who gave up a three-run homer to Bobby Boser in the ninth.

Marcus Morris Sr. appears to be back home after more than two days in a Florida jail following his weekend arrest over money he owed to two Las Vegas casinos. Morris, who played for the Clippers and seven other teams during his 11-year NBA career, took to Instagram on Wednesday morning, writing, "I woke up in my bed this morning" after having "to sit for 51 hours no bail and not even a chance to pay it back." "So did I go past the time I needed to repay yea probably did, did i know they would locked me up, hellllllllll No," Morris wrote, followed by four crying while laughing emojis. "I would pay a thing to stay outta jail. Money paid back and lesson learned." Morris was arrested Sunday at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on felony fraud charges out of Nevada. Records from the Las Vegas Township Justice Court indicate that warrants were issued earlier this year for Morris' arrest on the same two felony counts in each case — drawing or passing a check for $1,200 or more with the intent to defraud and theft valued at $100,000 or more. During a hearing Tuesday morning in Florida's Broward County, it was confirmed that the warrants for Morris' arrest in Nevada were over outstanding casino markers for more than $100,000 each. Morris was denied bail pending his extradition to Nevada. The judge stated that if the warrants against him were dismissed, Morris would be released. An attorney representing Morris said that 'a large payment' had already been sent via wire in an effort to resolve the issue. Morris is no longer listed on the Broward County Sheriff's Office's inmate directory. Las Vegas Township Justice Court records still list both warrants for Morris' arrest as active, but on Tuesday a new court date was set in both cases for Aug. 6. In his lengthy Instagram post, Morris wrote that he does not appreciate how he has been portrayed by some during his ordeal. "The key word I won't [accept is] fraud because this had nothing to do with no money exchange or me not being able to pay something," he wrote. "My Character means everything to me and my family as well. I hate for Vegas to really make me really look like a criminal over a petty couple hundred. And really made me sit 51 hours over that s—." He said that he and his twin brother, NBA veteran Markieff Morris, will appear "on a platform sometime soon ... to explain what took place and what lessons was learned for the young [athletes] that watch and look up to us." Fans took to the comments to share that they enjoy eating pouches too as a quick, convenient, and tasty snack. Why Ahkello Witherspoon is the 'Yoda' of the Rams defensive corps
NFL careers typically do not last long. For most players, getting to a second contract is challenging. And careers that extend well beyond that milestone are uncommon in a business that churns through talent. So when Ahkello Witherspoon began his career in 2017, he could not envision that he would be preparing for his ninth season. 'I had no idea,' the Rams cornerback said. Witherspoon, 30, is the most veteran player in a Rams secondary that remains unchanged in personnel from when the Rams advanced to the NFC divisional round. Read more: Quentin Lake plays the waiting game regarding his future with the Rams Witherspoon and 32-year-old Darious Williams, an eighth-year pro, are the projected starters for a group that includes Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. among others. Witherspoon played four seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, and two with the Pittsburgh Steelers before the Rams signed him to a one-year, veteran-minimum contract before the 2023 season. Despite intercepting three passes, Witherspoon was still a free agent when the 2024 season began. But after since-released Tre'Davious White struggled mightily in the opener, the Rams signed Witherspoon to the practice squad. By the end of the season, he was a starter, including for two playoff games. This year, the Rams did not wait. In March, they signed Witherspoon to another one-year deal, giving him the opportunity to prepare for the first time with the team through offseason workouts. 'Guys just play calmer and better when they're in there with him,' defensive coordinator Chris Shula said, adding, 'He's like the savvy leader. ... He's almost like the Yoda,' of the position group.' Witherspoon, who has 12 career interceptions, knows that younger teammates look to him as an example. 'Part of my growth is taking ownership of that,' he said, adding, 'I don't just get to focus on myself, and it's been a learning experience for me. It's been empowering for me as a person and a player.' After losing to the eventual Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, the Rams did not sign or draft a new cornerback or safety. The inaction was unusual because roster turnover is the norm. Witherspoon saw it as a vote of confidence. 'They do a good job here in terms of being honest with what they see,' Witherspoon said, noting that the Rams seem to limit transactions. 'What I saw in the offseason was the most extreme version of that in my career, so it was definitely noticeable. 'But I also think it's a testament to the group that we have. It's not on us to do something different. It's just be ourselves and continue to grow.' 'Just keep it simple in that regard. ... I think we have the ability to play to our skillset, which is being aggressive and being quick and making quick decisions using our communication, our experience to not make any bonehead mistakes. 'I'm really looking forward to just that combination of speed, aggression and power up front and the middle, and our communication and attacking mentality. I think it's going to be special.'
