Johnny Gaudreau's sister opens up on wedding anxiety as she ties the knot one year after ex-NHL star and brother died on eve of her ceremony
11 months after the sudden and tragic deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, Katie got married to high school sweetheart Devin Joyce in a ceremony in New Jersey.
At the end of last August, Johnny and Matthew were riding their bikes the day before Katie was set to be married when they were struck and killed at the ages of 31 and 29 respectively. Both brothers were set to serve as groomsmen in the wedding.
Now, Katie and Devin tied the knot at St. Mary's Church in Gloucester City, New Jersey before crossing the Delaware River for a reception at The Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia.
After the wedding, Katie exclusively opened up to People Magazine about pre-marriage anxiety and how she was able to manage her grief over the loss of her brothers.
'It's hard to put into words how much has shifted and how much I've carried in my heart since last August,' she told the outlet.
'Back then, we were preparing with so much love and excitement. I remember the way John and Matty lit up — how genuinely happy they were to celebrate Devin and me. Their joy was radiant, effortless and contagious.'
Katie said she was trying 'so hard to return to that emotional space, to honor the moment as [Johnny and Matthew] would have,' but knew that things would be different without her brothers.
'And I know, deep in my heart, that they would have wanted us to feel love — not just their love — but all of it: the kind that surrounds us, uplifts us and reminds us that we are not alone in any of this,' she explains.
'So today, I hold both the sorrow of their absence and the beauty of their presence. Their love didn't leave.'
Devin told the outlet, '[We knew] this wedding would be completely different from what we planned last year — we're missing two of the most important people who should be here with us. It wouldn't be the same, but it would still be a celebration of love — ours and theirs.'
Initially, the couple planned to host the reception in Philadelphia at The Lucy - a wedding venue in Center City. However, after re-scheduling due to her brothers' untimely deaths, she couldn't hold the ceremony there.
'I needed something different,' she told the outlet. 'The Lucy was never going to be what my dream wedding was because I was missing two essential pieces of our day.'
Instead, the couple picked The Bellevue - which had an attached hotel. After the horrific events of the year prior, that became an important element for Katie.
'I wanted a space where we could all be together the night before — somewhere we could sleep over, wake up together, and just be, without having to leave or be separated,' Katie said, adding, 'I was having a lot of anxiety about everyone leaving the venue after the reception and something happening, so I wanted a space where we would all be together.'
To help with the healing, over a dozen vendors donated their services for the ceremony and reception out of the kindness of their hearts.
'This past year has brought the kind of grief that changes you. Many days, the ache of missing them was so deep, it felt hard to breathe. But alongside that pain, there has also been immense and unwavering love,' Katie says.
'It is this love that has carried us through love from our tight-knit community, the hockey family, and from people across the country and even around the world.'
She adds, 'It's impossible to describe what it means to feel that kind of support when your world has been shattered. But we felt it. And we still do. Our family will carry that love with us forever.'

PSG 'lost their heads' after final
Chelsea striker Joao Pedro said Paris St-Germain "lost their heads" in the aftermath of Sunday's Club World Cup Brazil forward, 23, ended up on the floor during an incident involving PSG manager Luis Enrique, as tempers flared between the two sides following Chelsea's 3-0 victory at MetLife Stadium in New Enrique said afterwards those scenes were the "result of the pressure of the match" and that his "intention was to separate the footballers so the situation didn't become worse". Joao Pedro, who scored Chelsea's third goal, said: "I don't need to talk about them. Everyone wants to win the game and, in the end, I think they lost their heads."But this is football. This has happened. Now we need to enjoy it because we won the tournament, that's it."I don't want to talk too much about them because you know how it works. Football is this."The confrontations at full-time came after PSG's Joao Neves was sent off in the closing minutes for pulling the hair of Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella. Luis Enrique, whose side were bidding to follow up their domestic treble and Champions League victory in 2024-25 with Club World Cup success, said: "I have no problem expressing my feelings at the end of the game in a high level of pressure. It's very stressful for all of us. It is going to be impossible to avoid that."Everybody was involved. It was not what was best and the end result of the pressure of the match."I have seen [Chelsea manager Enzo] Maresca. I saw he had pushed others and we had to separate all the players and I do not know where that pressure came from."But this is a situation we must all avoid, that goes without saying. My intention was to separate the footballers so the situation didn't become worse."Joao Pedro's dinked 43rd-minute finish added to two earlier strikes from Cole Palmer as Chelsea won the first edition of the expanded Club World Cup.

Taking to her Instagram Story on Sunday, Hanni also revealed that herself and Jack had been at a lesson for their first dance, as she shared a mirror selfie of the pair in a studio captioned: 'Hungover but dancing through as Mrs Shepherd to be.' She captioned her hen party snaps: 'The non hen party party, two weeks before the wedding. 25 years of a special friendship with these beautiful girlies, how lucky are we. 'I love you all so much, thank you for throwing me a non hen party party it was perfect. The next time I see you I'll be walking down the aisle.' Back in June, Hanni shared a sweet post about her husband-to-be as they celebrated a year since getting engaged. Donald Trump is SNUBBED by one Chelsea star, who dodges handshake with the US President at Club World Cup trophy presentation
Chelsea youngster Tyrique George appeared more than happy to pass up a handshake from United States President Donald Trump after the Blues' Club World Cup win. Trump was put to work by FIFA boss Gianni Infantino after watching Chelsea claim a shock 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at New Jersey 's MetLife Stadium, handing out medals to the victorious squad before taking centre stage for the trophy lift. For the most part, his presence during this portion of the ceremony went unnoticed. That was until George, who has enjoyed a breakout year for the Blues, dodged a handshake from Trump. Seeing Trump occupied by the taxing task of retrieving another medal, the 19-year-old decided against waiting and instead opted to receive the congratulations of Blues co-owner Todd Boehly. The snub, intentional or otherwise, was noted by Trump, who looked in the youngster's direction before returning to his temporary duties. Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Trump later inserted himself into the heart of Chelsea's celebrations, deciding to remain among the Blues stars as skipper Reece James lifted the Club World Cup trophy. It was anticipated that the Commander-in-Chief would step aside after giving the trophy to James - as is customary. However, to the bewilderment of many Chelsea players, Trump remained on stage for the entire trophy lift. England hero Cole Palmer looked especially confused by Trump's actions and appeared to utter the words: 'What's he doing?' Trump had earlier presented Palmer with the golden ball award with the 23-year-old midfielder looking as equally baffled during that presentation. He and First Lady Melania arrived roughly 35 minutes before kickoff at the nearby Teterboro Airport on the presidential Marine One helicopter from his local golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The 79-year-old was given VIP treatment as he soaked up the action alongside Melania, who cut a chic figure in a white dress and black blazer, and FIFA boss Infantino. The outing fell on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt Trump survived in Butler, Pennsylvania, and significant security measures were put in place for his arrival. As detailed in The Athletic , secret service officials worked with organizers to put together a travel route to the venue, and it was believed he would be behind a pane of bulletproof glass at the game. The president was put on screen at MetLife during the singing of the national anthem prior to the game, and reports emerged from the stadium that he was booed before the stadium camera cut away from him. MetLife Stadium later echoed with more boos when Trump, joined by Infantino, made his way out onto the field to present the champions with the trophy. Trump's involvement in the trophy presentation after the game further complicated the required security around the American Commander-in-Chief. 'When you do the threat and risk assessment, you cover anything that could go wrong: if they were at a mass gathering, what if the stage collapsed?' Nigel Thomas, a former British Special Air Service (SAS) soldier and founder of security training firm, Blue Mountain Group, told The Athletic.
