CM Stalin challenges Delhi's delimitation plans: 'Orani vs Delhi ani' in 2026

CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin took to X platform on the occasion of World Population Day, observed on July 11, to raise the issue of 'unfair' delimitation planned by the union government.
Mentioning the party's ongoing campaign, Oraniyil Tamil Nadu, Stalin asserted that state will not bow, and stated, 'We rise together. This is Orani vs Delhi ani. (Delhi team)' He also posted an image with the slogan, 'Planned states deserve a greater voice.'
Stalin listed the progress made by the state such as population control, empowering women with dignity, delivering healthcare and education for all, and championing sustainable development.
He also charged the union government, asking, 'What do we get in return? Fewer seats, less funding, and a voice that is being pushed out of Parliament.' He reasoned, 'Why? Because Tamil Nadu did the right thing. And that threatens Delhi.'
Coming down heavily on AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, Stalin wrote, 'What's worse, EPS and his party are standing with Delhi, not with Tamil Nadu.' Stalin went on to say that the AIADMK was backing the unfair delimitation that punishes the state for its progress.
It may be recalled that Stalin has been accusing the union government of deliberately postponing the Census to 2027, with population-based delimitation in mind, something that would reduce Tamil Nadu's representation in the Parliament.
Stalin also launched an initiative to renovate 63 temples, which are over 1,000 years old, located in various parts of the state, through video conference from the secretariat on Friday.

EPS misleading AIADMK cadre on alliance: DMK

CHENNAI: Reacting to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's assertion that the saffron party will join the government if the AIADMK-BJP alliance wins in 2026, DMK organisational secretary R S Bharathi said, 'That is the BJP's agenda. Palaniswami, despite already knowing this, is misleading his own party cadre out of fear that they themselves will not accept it.' Countering Shah's claims, in an interview to TNIE, that the NDA would win by a landslide in TN in 2026, Bharathi said, 'They definitely cannot win. Since 1967, TN has been ruled only by Dravidian parties. The Tamil people will never accept a coalition government. EPS is falsely claiming that the AIADMK is leading the coalition. In reality, it is the BJP that is leading it.' To support his point, Bharathi recalled the DMK-Congress alliance in 1980, which ended in a debacle. Meanwhile, Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani questioned the AIADMK leadership in response to Shah's interview. Veeramani asked, 'More than just saying it will be a coalition government, Shah goes one step further and says the election will go 'their' way. What will the AIADMK, which is mortgaged, say about it?' CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said, 'Shah's interview is proof that the AIADMK-BJP alliance has been in constant confusion. On the one hand, Shah says it will be a coalition government; on the other, EPS claims the AIADMK will form a majority government. EPS must clarify this confusion. We can't even be sure how an AIADMK-led government alone would function. In this situation, a coalition government with the BJP will surely cause great harm to Tamil Nadu.'

Tamil Nadu schooled over classroom seating idea

New arrangement may affect kids' health 'Students on the sides will be forced to turn their necks for hours, five days a week. This can lead to 50% of students developing serious neck-related issues, and 15% may face very serious issues,' a neurosurgeon posted on X. He also warned of visual strain, especially for students who wear glasses, as they would be forced to look through the periphery of their lenses rather than the optic centre, causing further eye discomfort and headaches. The circular issued by the Director of School Education had asked all Chief Educational Officers in every district to ensure the new seating arrangement in all classrooms, taking into account the number of students and the size of the classrooms. Although the arrangement was supposed to be implemented depending on each classroom's size as per the circular, many pointed out that government and government-aided schools have longer classrooms, unlike the wider rooms needed to accommodate seating arrangements in 'Pa' shape. Moreover, classrooms with a large number of students will face difficulty even with the new arrangement. The inspiration behind the move came after some schools in Kerala voluntarily adopted similar seating arrangements, inspired by the Malayalam film Sthanarthi Sreekuttan. Reacting to the proposal, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami slammed the state government of copying ideas from films without any proper study. 'Stop playing with students' health for publicity,' he posted on X. BJP state secretary SG Suryah, too, criticised the move. The director confirmed to TNIE that the circular has been put on hold. 'After health concerns were raised, we are currently discussing whether to implement it. A final decision will be taken after detailed discussions next week,' he said. BJP may seek over 35 seats from AIADMK in 2026

COIMBATORE: With the AIADMK and BJP already switching on to election mode, the saffron party is mulling to demand over 35 seats, which is almost double the number they got in the 2021 election, from the Dravidian major. A senior BJP functionary confirmed they are planning to ask for over 35 seats, with additional seats in districts such as Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli and Chennai where the party sees potential for growth. 'In 2021, at a time when we were still laying the foundation in TN, the BJP got 20 seats from AIADMK. Now, we have grown significantly, achieving a double-digit vote share in the 2024 Parliamentary election without the support of the Dravidian parties. Therefore, we believe we can ask the AIADMK to double the seat allocation,' the functionary said. When asked about the specific number of seats, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran declined to comment directly. 'We are working to strengthen 68,000 booths across the state. The number of seats and the candidates for those will be decided by the party's high command. However, I hope the BJP will secure more MLA seats in the Assembly during my tenure as state president, and that is my responsibility too,' Nagenthran said. He also noted the possibility of contesting seats where they have sitting MLAs, including Coimbatore South, Modakurichi, Nagercoil, and Tirunelveli. Confirming it, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, during a recent election campaign that he started from Coimbatore, praised the performance of the BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan (Coimbatore South). BJP functionaries said Palaniswami's statement was an indirect hint that Vanathi would contest from the constituency in the upcoming election. If confirmed, it will be the third time that Vanathi Srinivasan – national president of BJP Mahila Morcha – will be contesting from the Coimbatore South. 'I consider Edappadi Palaniswami's praise as recognition of my performance as an MLA,' said Vanathi, adding, she hopes that she did significant work in her constituency.
