Sabah group urges delay in SST expansion

Kota Kinabalu: The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Sabah Chapter) wants the Federal Government to postpone the recent expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), citing severe financial pressure on local traders and contractors. Its Chairman David Chan said the tax expansion has created an unexpected burden for small businesses already struggling with challenging economic conditions.
Advertisement 'The current economic climate is already marked by global trade uncertainties, weakening consumer spending, and job cuts,' David said in a statement, here, Saturday. He said contractors have been particularly hard hit, reporting sharp increases in operating and capital expenditure since the SST expansion took effect. Many businesses are now struggling with cash flow problems, finding it difficult to service loans and meet project commitments. He said continued financial pressure on small and medium enterprises could have broader economic consequences. 'Imposing further financial stress on the backbone of our local economy may lead to a cascading effect on employment and national productivity,' he said. He called for a grace period that would allow affected businesses to reassess their financial commitments, engage with financial institutions and realign their cost structures. 13MP places Sabah's priorities in national plan: Bung

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin described the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a clear recognition of Sabah's role as a driver of rural transformation and sustainable economic growth. The Kinabatangan MP said 13MP is not just a development roadmap but a strategic shift that places Sabah's priorities at the core of national planning, especially through investments in agriculture, fisheries and agro-based industries. '13MP not only reflects the intent to develop regional infrastructure and the economy, but also strengthens the principles of social justice and long-term rural economic resilience,' he said. He pointed to the RM227 billion allocation for the economic sector, including the creation of an integrated fisheries hub and blue economy in Sabah, as a decisive step towards building a stronger local food supply chain. He added that the plan's focus on modernising agriculture through automation and smart technologies would bring a significant impact to rural communities across the State. Bung also underscored several major projects listed in the 13MP, including the development of the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, upgrading of biodiesel depots in Sandakan and Lahad Datu, and the continuation of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah. 'The emphasis on developing the rural workforce through TVET and targeted financing under the TVET Madani programme will shape a new generation of young agropreneurs and local technocrats, in line with 13MP's aspiration to create 1.2 million job opportunities by 2030, including in the digital economy and smart agriculture,' he said. He stressed that Sabah should not be viewed merely as a recipient of federal development, but as a catalyst for national progress. Sultan Ibrahim's 2025 state visit to Russia marks historic moment

Kuala Lumpur: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, will make history as the first Malaysian Head of State to conduct an official visit to Russia from August 5 to 10, 2025. The visit comes at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Istana Negara confirmed the visit in a statement, highlighting its significance in reinforcing diplomatic relations established in 1967. 'This visit also reflects the important role of the Malaysian monarchy in advancing the nation's diplomacy,' the statement said. The trip aims to expand cooperation in trade, higher education, technology, and innovation while fostering stronger people-to-people ties. As ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia will also leverage the visit to enhance strategic cooperation with Russia, an ASEAN Dialogue Partner since 1996.
