Edmunds small luxury SUV test: 2025 Acura ADX vs 2025 BMW X1

Edmunds small luxury SUV test: 2025 Acura ADX vs 2025 BMW X1

The Hill4 days ago
The 2025 Acura ADX is all-new this year, and it takes its place as Acura's smallest and least expensive crossover SUV. If you think Acura's RDX or MDX are too big or too expensive, the entry-level ADX could very well satisfy.
Among many rivals the ADX faces, one of the most well-established models is the 2025 BMW X1. The X1 arrived in BMW dealerships more than a decade ago, and BMW released this latest third-generation X1 for the 2023 model year. Similar to how Acura positions the ADX, the X1 is the entry point to BMW's extensive lineup of SUVs.
The ADX and X1 each have seating for five and city-friendly dimensions. But there are differences in price, features and how each drives. Edmunds' team of experts tested them to find out which pint-size SUV is the better buy.
Engines and fuel economy
The ADX has a 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. Unfortunately, Edmunds found the ADX lacks the refined dynamics found in other Acura vehicles, particularly regarding acceleration. The ADX needed 9.4 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph during Edmunds' testing. This is much slower than nearly all direct rivals, including the spry X1.
In comparison, the BMW X1 delivers more of the premium driving feel expected in a luxury vehicle. A turbocharged four-cylinder produces 241 horsepower in the entry-level xDrive28i model or 341 horsepower in the zesty M35i. Each is fitted to a seven-speed automatic transmission and, unlike the ADX, all-wheel drive is standard. Edmunds found its xDrive28i test vehicle needed only 5.9 seconds for the same sprint to 60 mph. That's a difference you'll feel whenever you need to get up to speed on the highway or desire a burst of power to pass a slow-moving car.
Fuel economy is a bragging point of both SUVs. The ADX and X1 xDrive28i each offer an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined city/highway — this dips to 27 mpg when the ADX is fitted with all-wheel drive.
Winner: BMW X1
Features and value
On price alone, the ADX appears the clear winner. It starts at $36,350 including destination charges. That's thousands less than the X1's entry-level price of $42,525. Standard features in the ADX include synthetic leather upholstery, a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless device charging, and ambient LED interior lighting. It also comes packed with an impressive roster of driver aids, such as blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance.
While the X1 is more expensive, it does get all-wheel drive as standard and not an extra-cost option like it is on the ADX. The racy M35i delivers plenty of punch, though it comes with a price — specifically one starting north of $50,000. Similar to its Acura rival, the X1 is nicely equipped with tech features like a digital instrument display, a 10.2-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone connectivity. The X1 doesn't come with as many standard driver aids, though it does offer a few extra ones that can't get on an ADX at all.
Winner: tie
Comfort and utility
Edmunds experts found the front seats in the ADX A-Spec Advance test vehicle comfortable, highly adjustable, and wrapped in quality leather upholstery. In comparison, the optional M Sport front seats of Edmunds' X1 test vehicle proved great at holding you in place during quick cornering but possibly too firm for ensuring comfort on long drives.
The same held true for the X1's sport-tuned suspension; Edmunds suggests choosing standard seat and suspension settings to boost the X1's comfort levels. Both come standard with heated front seats, but only the ADX has available ventilated seats to help you stay cool on hot days. In the X1's favor is its quiet cabin. The ADX, in contrast, lets in a lot of wind and road noise when you're driving on the highway.
Both of these SUVs are respectably roomy. The X1 has more overall headroom front and rear, though the ADX fights back with a small edge in rear legroom. Cargo space is another near tie — the ADX provides up to 24.4 cubic feet of storage compared to 25.7 cubic feet with the X1.
This is a close category, but the X1 has enough of an advantage to give it the edge.
Winner: BMW X1
Edmunds says
The Acura ADX will appeal to you if you're looking for a small crossover SUV that's attractively priced. But it also doesn't do much to differentiate itself from a field full of more accomplished rivals. Overall, Edmunds recommends the X1. It's enjoyable to drive and pleasingly luxurious while still being practical.

I thought the BMW ix xDrive45 was overrated until I drove it for a week — here's why

A few months ago I got my first look at the new 2026 BMW iX series. I got to drive all of them, including the entry-level model in the xDrive45, but came away thinking they were overrated from my day's worth of driving. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of how BMW's vehicles perfectly blend power and features, like the BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe I drove for a week last year, but their high sticker prices are certainly hard to overlook. The iX xDrive45 is definitely in that boat with its $75,150 starting cost. That's why I put the 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 to the test for a week to see if it could change my sentiments. Usually vehicles in this price range overlook efficiency in favor of other stuff, but I'm surprised by the results. It's certainly moved the needle to put it in the conversation of best electric cars I've tested this year. 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 Battery 100.1 kWh Motor Dual all-electric motors AWD 0 to 60 mph 4.9 seconds Range 312 miles Horsepower 402 hp Wheels 21-inches MSRP $75,150 Price Tested $88,000 Considering how the 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 offers a sporty driving experience that emphasizes power, I didn't think it would be efficient. However, I'm dead wrong because it exceeded my expectations. After driving a total of 339.9 miles during my week's worth of testing, it achieved an average efficiency of 3.3 mi/kWh. That's outstanding, as it beats other similar, sporty all-electric EVs I've tested like the Chevrolet Blazer SS and Acura ZDX-Type S. For a decently sized crossover SUV, I have to admit I wasn't expecting this level of efficiency. In one of my long distance drives, the xDrive45 delivered an efficiency of 3.8 mi/kWh. Again, I didn't think it was capable of reaching something like this because it's usually smaller EVs, like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Volvo EX30, that get these kinds of results. What's even more impressive is that the efficiency I got exceeds its EPA-estimated range of 312 miles. Based on its 100.1 kWh battery and the 3.3 mi/kWh average efficiency it reached, it means that the xDrive45 could get upwards of 330 miles of range. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I'm also very pleased by the xDrive45's Level 1 charging at home. It delivered an average rate of 3.82 mi/hr charging it through a standard 120V. Basically, it added back 34 miles of range with 8.9 hours of charging. This is more than enough for me and anyone just getting their first EV, but I always recommend installing a Level 2 charger if your daily commute is much farther. 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 2025 Chevrolet Blazer SS 2024 Acura ZDX Type S Price tested $88,000 $64,675 $73,500 Total miles driven 339.9 miles 547.2 miles 240.4 miles Average Efficiency 3.3 mi/kWh 3 mi/kWh 2.7 mi/kWh Best long distance driving efficiency 3.8 mi/kWh 3.5 mi/kWh 2.3 mi/kWh Best short distance driving efficiency 3 mi/kWh 3.9 mi/kWh N/A Level 1 charging rate 3.82 mi/hr 2.78 mi/hr 3.14 mi/hr Usually you have to be a little more careful with driving an SUV, but this one performs much like a two-door coupe on steroids. The 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 offers impressive power that delivers 402 hp performance from its dual electric motors. Not only does it fly from a complete stop to reach cruising speed, but the xDrive45 handles corners and curves almost as well as some sporty EVs I've driven — like the Dodge Charger EV. Even with all the power and speed, it's whisper quiet on the inside with its exceptional sound proofing. I really love how it can go from race car performance to a super smooth and quiet ride for those long drives. Self parking isn't anything new with EVs, but I often find them unpredictable. Thankfully, the BMW ix xDrive45 gives me the confidence to give it complete control of the wheel to steer the vehicle in a spot. Whereas some cars take a long time to complete this task, the xDrive45 got me into a spot in less than 30 seconds. On top of auto park assist, the BMW ix xDrive45 can actually pull out of a spot fast and automatically with its Backup Assistant — which remembers how it pulled into a parking spot and uses that to back out. I'm impressed because it drove the xDrive45 in reverse out of my driveway that's about 115 feet in length to get onto the road One of the other reasons why I'm confident about automatic parking is because of the high quality cameras this BMW EV uses. I test a lot of the best camera phones around and know how beneficial it is to have cameras with a wide dynamic range. The ones all around the xDrive45 capture rich details, and more importantly, offer high dynamic range to draw out details in tough lighting conditions. That's why I really like activating the overhead view that shows the vehicle and everything else close by. Thanks to its rich detail capture, I can see everything I need to avoid while parking. All the guidelines overlaid onto the camera view really helps out a lot. Just like my preview test drive, the one feature that sets the 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 apart from all other EVs I've tested is its ability to change lanes with a head gesture. The iX's Driving Assist Plus will check to see if the lanes are clear on either side when its adaptive cruise control system is active. When it does, it'll play a tone to indicate the option to change lanes, which is done by moving my head to look at the corresponding side mirror. It works really well, and I prefer this implementation over the Super Cruise Control systems I've tried with EVs like the Cadillac Optiq. BMW's approach is better because it gives me control of what to do, rather than the car making the decision for me. If you're not comfortable with this, you can always initiate the lane change by simply flicking the turn signal. There's something to say about the 2026 BMW ix xDrive45. It clearly doesn't skimp on the features because it has everything you'd want for this price. For example, I really love how I can customize the head-up display to show me more than just navigation directions — like actually seeing a small preview of the map. There's also the panoramic sunroof that features an electrochromic glass to go from transparent to opaque with a press of a button. This is similar to other EVs that have it, like the Rivian R1S and Lexus RZ 450e. I also need to point out the slick-looking ambient lights at night, the xDrive45's neat light-up sequence when unlocking it, and how there are lights on the side that turn on when you're turning to better illuminate those blind spots. Honestly, the only thing I don't like about the 2026 BMW ix xDrive45 is the design of the cup holders on the center console. Yes, it might be a minor issue for some people, but they're positioned lower in the center console — which makes it inconvenient to access. I found myself having to stoop lower just to pull out a drink because of how low the cup holder is positioned. Reusable bottles with wider tops are also tough to place into the cupholder because the top edge of the middle armrest sits directly above it. After spending a week with the 2026 BMW ix xDrive45, I have a better appreciation for what it offers. While it stays true to the BMW philosophy of delivering a sport driving experience and innovative features, I'm most impressed by how it doesn't overlook efficiency. It's a critical area for me because as a driver, you expect a vehicle to get as much range as possible with a full battery. I thought the xDrive45 was just going to be another power hungry all-electric SUV, but it's so satisfying to know it can be efficient, too. There's no other luxury EV that remotely matches its blend of performance, efficiency, and features. Follow Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. Acura Can Catch Porsche in IMSA WeatherTech Manufacturer's Chase

Now that the others have won, look for a return to a less draconian BoP for the Ferrari 499P in the WEC and Porsche in IMSA. It remains to be seen if IMSA officials have in fact balanced the performance. Hopefully, there will be a straight fight for the manufacturer title between Porsche and Acura, which trails by 90 points. After two straight victories by the Acura MSR team in the WeatherTech Championship, the interregnum is over for the Porsche Penske Motorsport team. Having been hobbled by the Balance of Performance (BoP), the Porsche team will have a chance to stand atop the podium again on Sunday after the sprint race at Road America. Urs Keratle, the director for Porsche's 963 program, said that simulations have shown the team will 'be able to compete with the others. The reality we will see in qualifying and the race.' The subtraction of weight (nine kilograms) and a 5.2% increase in Stage 2 power for the Porsches in the BoP prior to Road America reflects the current sports car racing season's pattern in both the World Endurance Championship and IMSA. The best performing cars and their teams have been heavily penalized midway in the season by BoP to open the door to other manufacturers. Now that the others have won, look for a return to a less draconian BoP for the Ferrari 499P in the WEC and Porsche in IMSA. Cadillac and its Jota team won its first WEC race in Round 5 in Brazil, where officials made it very unlikely for the Ferraris, winners of four straight races, to compete for victory. IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Porsche 2,182 Acura 2,092 Cadillac 1,974 BMW 1,962 Aston Martin 1,439 In IMSA, each of the two Acuras entered by Jim Meyers and Michael Shank won in Detroit and Watkins Glen in part because of the BoP hampering the Porsches. Cadillac scored three podiums in those two events. Keratle suggested Porsche Penske was unable to control its own destiny. 'We are prepared to be competitive in the races if it's very well in our hands,' he said. Who stands atop the podium at Wisconsin's picturesque Elkhart Lake circuit and then celebrates at the Siebkens resort will have a significant impact on the driver and manufacturer championships for the IMSA GTP season, which has two endurance races remaining after the Motul SportsCar Grand Prix. It remains to be seen if IMSA officials have in fact balanced the performance and a straight fight for the manufacturer title will evolve between Porsche and Acura, which trails by 90 points. On the driver side, the four straight victories by Porsche Penske to open the season put its drivers in an almost unassailable position. Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet, drivers of the No. 6 Porsche 963, lead teammates Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr by 12 points after the latter two's poor result at the Glen. Acura MSR drivers Renger van der Zande and Nick Yelloly, winners in Detroit, trail the Porsche drivers by 262 points in third place. There's more to come in the manufacturers' contest after the Glen victory, said David Salters, president of Honda Racing Corporation USA. The combination of the Meyers-Shank team and engineers from the HRC factory is beginning to pay dividends. Along with driver Tom Blomqvist, they successfully executed a challenging fuel strategy to grab the victory at the Glen from the Cadillac of Action Express Racing before celebrating at the Seneca Lodge. 'We are six races into the season and we're starting to show what we're made of,' said Salters. 'It was a great weekend, but we must keep pushing.' The Acura MSR squad gained 112 points in the factory title chase with its victories. The team likely needs to win at least two of the three remaining races to overcome the 90-point gap to Porsche Penske. Where Porsche Penske has no team orders, Acura MSR can employ split strategies and concentrate on just getting one car into Victory Lane. Blomqvist, who co-drove with Colin Braun on board the No. 60 ARX-06 at the Glen, is reconciled to his team now concentrating on the manufacturers title. 'We still stand a chance in the manufacturers, which is definitely a big goal of Acura's,' said Blomqvist. 'So, we haven't given up there, having won the last two events. Obviously, only one of the team's cars gets points for that. I think ultimately that's probably what we're going to focus on more than the drivers' title. Let's see.'
