After two straight victories by the Acura MSR team in the WeatherTech Championship, the interregnum is over for the Porsche Penske Motorsport team.
Having been hobbled by the Balance of Performance (BoP), the Porsche team will have a chance to stand atop the podium again on Sunday after the sprint race at Road America. Urs Keratle, the director for Porsche's 963 program, said that simulations have shown the team will 'be able to compete with the others. The reality we will see in qualifying and the race.'
The subtraction of weight (nine kilograms) and a 5.2% increase in Stage 2 power for the Porsches in the BoP prior to Road America reflects the current sports car racing season's pattern in both the World Endurance Championship and IMSA. The best performing cars and their teams have been heavily penalized midway in the season by BoP to open the door to other manufacturers.

In IMSA, each of the two Acuras entered by Jim Meyers and Michael Shank won in Detroit and Watkins Glen in part because of the BoP hampering the Porsches. Cadillac scored three podiums in those two events. Keratle suggested Porsche Penske was unable to control its own destiny. 'We are prepared to be competitive in the races if it's very well in our hands,' he said.
Who stands atop the podium at Wisconsin's picturesque Elkhart Lake circuit and then celebrates at the Siebkens resort will have a significant impact on the driver and manufacturer championships for the IMSA GTP season, which has two endurance races remaining after the Motul SportsCar Grand Prix.
It remains to be seen if IMSA officials have in fact balanced the performance and a straight fight for the manufacturer title will evolve between Porsche and Acura, which trails by 90 points. On the driver side, the four straight victories by Porsche Penske to open the season put its drivers in an almost unassailable position. Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet, drivers of the No. 6 Porsche 963, lead teammates Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr by 12 points after the latter two's poor result at the Glen.
Acura MSR drivers Renger van der Zande and Nick Yelloly, winners in Detroit, trail the Porsche drivers by 262 points in third place.
There's more to come in the manufacturers' contest after the Glen victory, said David Salters, president of Honda Racing Corporation USA. The combination of the Meyers-Shank team and engineers from the HRC factory is beginning to pay dividends. Along with driver Tom Blomqvist, they successfully executed a challenging fuel strategy to grab the victory at the Glen from the Cadillac of Action Express Racing before celebrating at the Seneca Lodge.
'We are six races into the season and we're starting to show what we're made of,' said Salters. 'It was a great weekend, but we must keep pushing.'
The Acura MSR squad gained 112 points in the factory title chase with its victories. The team likely needs to win at least two of the three remaining races to overcome the 90-point gap to Porsche Penske. Where Porsche Penske has no team orders, Acura MSR can employ split strategies and concentrate on just getting one car into Victory Lane.
Blomqvist, who co-drove with Colin Braun on board the No. 60 ARX-06 at the Glen, is reconciled to his team now concentrating on the manufacturers title.
'We still stand a chance in the manufacturers, which is definitely a big goal of Acura's,' said Blomqvist. 'So, we haven't given up there, having won the last two events. Obviously, only one of the team's cars gets points for that. I think ultimately that's probably what we're going to focus on more than the drivers' title. Let's see.'

By Abhirup Roy SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -A court verdict against Tesla last week, stemming from a fatal 2019 crash of an Autopilot-equipped Model S, could hurt its plans to expand its nascent robotaxi network and intensify concerns over the safety of its autonomous vehicle technology. A Florida jury ordered Musk's electric vehicle company on Friday to pay about $243 million to victims of the crash, finding its Autopilot driver-assistance software defective. Tesla said the driver was solely at fault and vowed to appeal. The verdict follows years of federal investigations and recalls related to collisions involving Tesla's autonomous-vehicle technology, and comes as CEO Elon Musk seeks regulatory approval to rapidly expand the robotaxi service across the U.S. "The public perception of this verdict or things like this are going to fuel pressure on regulators to say, 'We just can't let this stuff be launched without a lot more due diligence'," said Mike Nelson, founder of Nelson Law and an expert on legal issues in the mobility sector. Tesla could have a tough time convincing state regulators that its technology is road-ready, threatening Musk's goal of offering robotaxis to half the U.S. population by year end, legal experts and Tesla investors said. Expanding its robotaxi service is crucial for Tesla as demand for its aging lineup of EVs has cooled amid rising global competition and a backlash against Musk's far right political views. Much of Tesla's trillion-dollar market valuation hinges on his bets on robotics and artificial intelligence. Success in the self-driving realm will require winning the confidence of regulators and potential customers on the full-self driving (FSD) software that underpins Tesla's robotaxis, analysts said. "The timing (of the verdict) for Tesla in light of the FSD rollouts and robotaxis is awful," said Aaron Davis, co-managing partner at law firm Davis Goldman. "Now there's essentially an opinion that some aspect of Tesla's business is not safe and maybe the safety that the company advertises isn't what it's cracked up to be." The FSD is an advanced version of Autopilot. Autopilot, which was been updated since 2019, controls speed, distance and lane centering on highways, while the FSD can operate on city streets, helping the vehicle make automatic turns and change lanes. "This case does not have direct implications for Tesla's FSD roll-out," analysts at Piper Sandler said in a note on Sunday, citing the modern iterations of the software. A spokesperson on behalf of Tesla acknowledged the company had received a request for comment from Reuters but had not provided one by the time of publication. REGULATORY ROAD AHEAD Perfecting autonomous vehicles has been harder than expected. The high costs of hardware, years of trial and error, and regulatory hurdles have forced many players to close shop or pivot, including General Motors' Cruise unit. Musk, however, has pursued what he calls a simpler and cheaper path, relying only on cameras and AI instead of pricey sensors such as lidars and radars used by Alphabet's Waymo, Amazon's Zoox and others. After years of missed deadlines, Musk rolled out a small robotaxi trial in June with about a dozen Model Y crossover SUVs in Austin, Texas, each overseen by a human safety monitor in the front passenger seat. While Musk has said Tesla was being "super paranoid about safety", he has also pledged to expand the service fast and make it available for half of the U.S. population in the next five months - a stark contrast to Waymo's cautious years-long rollout. Until Tesla's entry, Waymo was the only U.S. firm to operate a paid, driverless robotaxi service. Tesla is currently awaiting approvals in several states, including California, Nevada, Arizona and Florida. California's department of motor vehicles declined to comment on the impact of the verdict on regulatory approval. Nevada said it held talks with Tesla about a robotaxi program several weeks ago, while Arizona said it was still considering Tesla's request for certification. Both did not comment on the verdict. Florida did not respond. Tesla has typically either won other Autopilot litigation or resolved the case with the plaintiffs out of court. The Florida verdict stands out. Several such cases are pending. The case involved a Model S sedan that went through an intersection and hit the victims' parked Chevrolet Tahoe as they were standing beside it. The driver had reached down to retrieve a dropped cellphone and allegedly received no alerts as he ran a stop sign before the crash. The jury found that Tesla's Autopilot had a defect and held the company partially responsible, despite the driver admitting fault. "It's going to take time to get regulators to move forward and time being more than the end of the year," said Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, a Tesla investor. "From an image standpoint, it's a black eye."

You're accelerating and stalling simultaneously. And here's the thing: The most visionary, high-performing leaders I've worked with often don't even realize they're caught in it. It's not laziness. It's not a lack of clarity or capability. It's usually an unspoken inner conflict between expansion and safety. The Hidden Drag on High Performers A Deloitte study found that 59% of high-level leaders feel 'trapped in success'—they've hit the outward milestones but feel unfulfilled, stagnant, or quietly disengaged. Ten practices into training camp, GM Omar Khan's busy offseason is already paying dividends. Two of the Steelers' top performers are trade acquisitions: DB Jalen Ramsey and WR DK Metcalf. Had the Steelers dealt Minkah Fitzpatrick for just Ramsey, they may have won that trade. Ramsey has been that instinctive, that athletic and that versatile while playing in the nickel, free safety and outside corner. He'll help the Steelers bring more nickel pressures, lock down tight ends, disguise coverages and get back to playing more man-to-man defenses. This looks like a defense much more capable of, for instance, defending the Bengals' many receiving threats, and Ramsey's arrival is a huge reason why. Advertisement Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers' quick release and Metcalf's massive frame have led to numerous successful slants. That appears to be a big part of the playbook. Let's look at who else's stock is up and whose is down, with plenty of training camp still to come… DT Derrick Harmon: The first-round pick has been thrown right into the mix as a starter in the base defense and sub packages. He's been as-advertised. His physicality has helped bottle up runs during padded practices. His quick hips and strong hands have made him a pass-rush threat, capable of being an impact player in passing situations. TE Darnell Washington as a receiving threat: The massive tight end has always been a dominant blocker, but the Steelers haven't taken advantage of his pass-catching ability enough. That could be changing, as Washington has made a number of outstanding catches during camp. That stood out when the Steelers were struggling Sunday during goal-line drills; the lone touchdown came when Aaron Rodgers put the ball up high where only Washington could catch it. WR Scotty Miller: The Steelers kept five wide receivers last year. The top five coming into camp were DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Robert Woods and Ben Skowronek. However, when Rodgers has struggled and needed to find a completion, Miller has often been the player stepping up. Stylistically, Miller's crisp route running and shifty playing style would marry well with Rodgers, who wants to play with timing and anticipation. I wonder if Miller can lap Woods or if the Steelers may consider keeping six WRs to get Miller onto the roster. Depth DBs (Brandin Echols, James Pierre): By adding high-end talent atop the depth chart like Ramsey and Darius Slay, the Steelers have strengthened the group as a whole. Echols is making his case to be the first CB off the bench and has the versatility to play in the nickel, creating a bit of a competition with Beanie Bishop for playing time. (They should both make the team.) Meanwhile, Pierre sits on the roster bubble because of all those upgrades. However, he intercepted Mason Rudolph to end the two-minute drill during Friday Night Lights and picked off two more passes the next day during one-on-one periods. Pierre's excellent gunning ability could help his cause. Advertisement RB Kenneth Gainwell: Gainwell caught the Steelers' eye last year, when the former Eagles running back beat Pittsburgh in the flat repeatedly. OC Arthur Smith has taken full advantage of Gainwell's diverse skill set, lining him up as a receiver and throwing him the ball out of the backfield. He'll be another chess piece in an offense that likes wildcards. I've also been struck by Gainwell's feel for outsize-zone runs, where he has good patience and the quick-twitch necessary to hit holes when they form. He could be carving out a large role in the offense. No. 1 defense talk: Multiple Steelers players, including Cameron Heyward and DeShon Elliott, haven't been afraid to say this year's team could be the NFL's No. 1 defense. It's a star-studded lineup full of All-Pros and Pro Bowlers. Especially with Ramsey playing closer to the line of scrimmage, they've made life miserable for the Steelers' offense. There's a ton of talent and depth on that side of the ball. ILBs who can cover: Tomlin said he believes the Steelers now have the cornerbacks to play man coverage against anyone. To do so, the inside linebackers are also part of that conversation. Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson have both been excellent in coverage. Wilson competing against Gainwell during one-on-one passing drills has been must-watch. Defensive schematic changes: Beyond the personnel changes, the Steelers have also evolved their defensive philosophy, specifically with more Cover 4. When the Steelers have played quarters coverage, they're capping verticals with corners and safeties to force Rodgers to check the ball down underneath. It also seems the communication issues that plagued this team last year have been remedied to a degree by some of these coverage tweaks. OT Broderick Jones: A groin injury robbed Jones of valuable developmental time in camp. He was better in one-on-one pass-rush drills in pads on Sunday. But overall he's missed a lot of camp, and until he consistently shows progress, it's worth wondering how much he'll improve in Year 3. Maybe as he gets healthier and has the chance to play in pads more often, the 20 pounds he lost will make a difference. Advertisement The WR2 contenders: Roman Wilson looks the part after a strong offseason — however, he's still not on the same page with Rodgers. The two most noticeable reps were incompletions in which Rodgers and Wilson didn't come close to connecting. Meanwhile, Calvin Austin III has missed the last two days with an injury. The chemistry with receivers not named Metcalf needs to improve considerably. DeMarvin Leal: With a tweener body type, Leal has never been able to carve out his niche on defense. He's been playing mostly as an outside linebacker in camp, but the Steelers already have four locks in T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer. I could see Leal landing on the outside looking in after cut-down day. Needed improvements in run game: Through three practices in pads, the offense has struggled to find anywhere to run the ball. Maybe the Steelers' remade defensive front is just that good. But as Sunday's goal-line period showed, even when they only need a yard, it's been tough sledding. Vertical passing game: Metcalf has been one of the NFL's best deep threats throughouth his career. So far in team settings (seven-on-seven and 11-on-11), Rodgers and Metcalf haven't been able to take the top off the defense at all. The optimistic way to look at this is that the defense is doing a better job of staying on top of verticals (in part because of coverage changes). But if opponents know that they don't have to worry about the go ball, it's going to make short, quick passes more challenging to convert.
