Andhra Police nab Rs 15 crore land-forgery gang, arrest seven

ONGOLE: Police in Prakasam district have dismantled a major land-forgery racket, arresting seven members of a 14-strong gang that allegedly tried to seize prime property in Sankhavaram with falsified documents. Acting on instructions from Prakasam Superintendent of Police AR Damodar, a team led by Kanigiri DSP Sai Eswar Yashwanth and Circle Inspector Shaik Khaja Vali raided multiple locations late Tuesday and took the suspects into custody. They were produced in court on Wednesday. According to DSP Yashwanth, the gang fabricated title deeds to grab 0.95-acre of land in Survey Nos.301 and 302, valued at about Rs 15 crore. The principal accused include Gona Barnabas, Annapureddy Konda Reddy, Jutike Dilwan and Mukku Venkateswarlu of Gudipatipalli (Veligandla mandal); Mukku Venkata Sriramulu Reddy of Immadicheruvu; Sanikommu Brahma Reddy of Doddichintala (HM Padu mandal); and Balbhadra Ravi of CS Puram. Seven others remain at large. The fraud came to light when the rightful owner, Polamreddy Mala Konda Reddy, noticed irregularities and filed a complaint. Investigators cross checked records at the Sub-Registrar, MRO and Surveyor offices, confirming that forged papers had been created to transfer ownership. A case has been registered under Sections 61(2), 318(4), 338, 336(3) and 340(2) read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police say arrests of the remaining suspects are imminent. 'We are committed to curbing land-grabbing through forged documents,' DSP Yashwanth said, warning real estate offenders of strict action and advising buyers to verify titles thoroughly before any transaction.

Another Tamil Nadu Custodial Assault Video Surfaces, Cops Transferred

Chennai: Even as Tamil Nadu reels under public anger over the alleged custodial death of 27-year-old temple security guard B. Ajithkumar in Sivaganga district, a fresh controversy has erupted with the emergence of CCTV footage showing police brutality at a station in Theni district. The disturbing video, which surfaced on social media on July 2, shows C. Ramesh (34), an autorickshaw driver from Devadanapatti, being repeatedly beaten by policemen inside the Devadanapatti police station. The footage has reignited public concerns over police excesses across the state. According to sources, the incident took place on January 14 when Ramesh was brought to the station for allegedly causing a public nuisance near the Arisikadai bus stop. Based on complaints from local residents, a police team detained Ramesh, reportedly in an inebriated state, and brought him to the station. Ramesh was allegedly caned inside the station by multiple officers before being booked under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for public disturbance. He was later released on station bail. What has stunned the public is how the incident came to light. A lawyer who had visited the police station on the same day for an unrelated matter filed a Right to Information (RTI) request in order to verify his presence at the station. A month later, when the district police responded and provided the CCTV footage, the visuals revealed the brutal assault on Ramesh. Though the video initially remained within legal circles, it was shared on social media on July 2 by the lawyer. The footage gained traction and went viral in the wake of the public outcry over Ajithkumar's custodial death in Thirupuvanam. Following the viral video, the Theni district police issued a press statement denying custodial torture. The statement claimed that the police had used 'minimum necessary force' to subdue Ramesh, who was allegedly intoxicated and uncontrollable at the time. Despite this denial, Theni District Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad has ordered a departmental inquiry led by an Additional Superintendent of Police. Pending investigation, Inspector K. Abdulla, Special Sub-Inspector Shiva Sambu, Head Constable S. Pandian, and Constables Marichamy and Valirajan have been transferred to the Armed Reserve (AR) unit. The incident has intensified calls for greater accountability in police stations across Tamil Nadu, with rights activists demanding independent probes and stronger safeguards against custodial abuse.

Woman strangled to death over dowry demands in Uttar Pradesh, in-laws booked

Nearly two months after her wedding, a woman was killed allegedly by her in-laws here after she failed to fulfil their dowry demands, police said on Thursday. Before killing her, Roshni's in-laws harassed her and demanded gold jewellery and cash.(Unsplash/representational) While her in-laws claimed she committed suicide, her family alleged she was strangled to death by her husband and his family. Four people, including the woman's husband, have been booked, police said. According to the FIR, Roshni Vishwakarma married Pradeep Vishwakarma of Sadashiv Patti village under Koirauna police station limits on March 6 under the Uttar Pradesh government's 'Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana'. However, Pradeep's family was dissatisfied over not receiving dowry and insisted on holding another wedding ceremony on May 31 to pressure Roshni's family, said the FIR registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman's brother. After the second wedding ceremony, Roshni's in-laws started harassing her and demanding gold jewellery and cash. She was killed at her in-laws' place on June 15. The accused took her body to the Gopiganj community health centre, nearly 20 kilometres from their home, in an attempt to destroy evidence, it added. Inspector Amit Kumar Singh of Gopiganj police station said Pradeep, his mother Radha Devi, father Balram Vishwakarma and sister Poonam have been booked under Section 85 (husband or relative of the husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The investigation into the case is being led by Circle Officer Chaman Singh Chawda.
