Auburn football is in the top four for DL Valdin Sone

USA Today6 days ago
Auburn remains in a four-team race for Valdin Sone ahead of Friday's announcement.
One of the nation's top defensive linemen is set to announce his commitment this week, and Auburn remains in the mix.
Valdin Sone, a four-star defensive lineman from Blue Ridge School in Dyke, Virginia, will announce his commitment this Friday, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals. Three SEC schools remain in the mix, with Auburn being included. Hugh Freeze and the Tigers will battle SEC rivals Georgia and Florida, as well as Nebraska, for the right to earn the pledge from the Swedish-born defensive lineman.
The Tigers are in Sone's top four, but how high are they on his radar? Sone called Auburn a "top priority" during his official visit to the Plains in May, and told Cole Pinkston of Rivals (subscription required) that his relationship with defensive line coach Vontrell King-Williams, as well as Auburn's knack for playing young players on defense, stands out to him.
However, projections from On3 and Rivals indicate that the Tigers have work to do if they want to secure the services of the prime defensive lineman. Georgia is the favorite with a 95.6% chance to land Sone, with Florida, Nebraska, and Auburn next in line.
Sone is the No. 15 defensive lineman from the 2026 class according to Rivals' industry rating, and the No. 4 player from Virginia.

Paul Finebaum responds to Rhett Lashlee's 'top-heavy' comment regarding SEC programs

Rhett Lashlee led SMU to the College Football Playoff last season, but took an opportunity to blast the SEC during his time at ACC football media days. Last season was a great year for former Auburn offensive coordinators, as Rhett Lashlee and Kenny Dillingham led SMU and Arizona State respectively to the College Football Playoff in the first year of its' expanded format. Lashlee, who served as Auburn's offensive coordinator from 2013-16 under his high school coach, Gus Malzahn, stood at the podium at ACC football media days this week to represent SMU as their head coach. During his time, he took a shot at the SEC by saying that the conference is not as deep as fans perceive. 'The SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964. Not a single one has been different since 1964,' Lashlee said at ACC football media days via On3. 'That's top-heavy to me. That's not depth.' Auburn was not the subject of this shot, as the Tigers won the 2010 national championship, a year that Lashlee was coincidentally a graduate assistant on Gene Chizik's staff. However, the conference's flagship programs of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee are the only SEC teams to win titles since then. Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma have each won a national championship since 1964, but were members of other conferences. Still, Lashlee's comments struck a nerve with SEC supporters, including Paul Finebaum. Finebaum, who hosts a national talk show on SEC Network and ESPN radio on weekday afternoons, went after the Mustangs and Lashlee during a recent appearance on ESPN's Get Up by referencing SMU's death penalty in the 1980s and Lashlee's alma mater. 'Do you know what happened at SMU? They shut the program down. While he's making fun of the SEC for winning national championships all over the place. SMU is the most corrupt program in the history of college football. Rhett Lashlee has the nerve to get up there and throw stones? By the way, he played at Arkansas. That should have nothing to do with it. That was one of the most comically embarrassing rants I have heard and I am glad the audio wasn't clear because I would have come right through that screen.' On3's Dan Morrison broke down the SEC's national championships since 1964, the year Lashlee used as a starting point. Alabama has won 15 titles in that span, while Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee have won at least two, totaling 30 national championships. As for the ACC, only Clemson, Florida State, and Georgia Tech have won national titles as members of the conference. Lashlee is not the only coach to take a shot at the SEC. During Big Ten football media days, Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti ignorantly criticized SEC football scheduling by saying that the Big Ten's nine-game format gives the Hoosiers an advantage when scheduling non-conference games against Group of Five programs. "So we figured we'd just adopt [an] SEC scheduling philosophy. Some people don't like it. I'm more focused in on those nine conference games," Cignetti said, via Trojans Wire. Cignetti's comments follow Indiana's cancellation of a series with Virginia, leaving them with zero non-conference games against Power Four opponents through 2029. Meanwhile, every SEC team except Ole Miss will play at least one non-SEC game against a Power Four team. Teams like Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina, will play two non-conference games against Power Four foe this season. Three reasons why LSU football linebacker Whit Weeks can win the Butkus Award

Whit Weeks returns to LSU football for a highly anticipated third season. The linebacker turned in a breakout sophomore year in 2024. His 25 pressures and 56 stops both ranked second among SEC linebackers, and he led the Tigers with 125 tackles. Weeks also added 10 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, 3.5 sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and an interception. In his second season under defensive coordinator Blake Baker, Weeks is poised for another standout year. He's certainly a preseason contender for the Butkus Award and has a great chance to take it home with a repeat performance of last year. Weeks' play is contingent upon his recovery from a lower-body injury sustained during the second quarter of LSU's bowl game in January. Head coach Brian Kelly pointed to a full return for Weeks by fall camp, so it appears he'll be ready to lead the Tigers' front seven. Here are three reasons why Weeks will win the 2025 Butkus Award. LSU DC Blake Baker has a strong history of developing linebackers Baker built a reputation for developing talented linebackers dating back to his first stint at LSU and time at Missouri. Weeks took a large step forward from his first to his second season in Baton Rouge, thanks in large part to Baker's tutelage. A second season in Baker's system should yield similar growth from last offseason for Weeks. Now a junior, he'll not only be playing for championships at LSU but also to increase his draft stock ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. Weeks' returning production is better than any SEC linebacker Weeks is coming off a season in which he was among the SEC's top five in multiple categories. Within arguably the toughest conference in college football, he already separated himself from the competition. With home contests against conference juggernauts Florida and South Carolina, as well as road games at Alabama and Texas A&M, Weeks will have plenty of opportunities to prove he's the best at his position. Weeks has the talent to make splashy plays Weeks puts himself in great positions to make standout plays. Highlight reel-worthy plays make a difference in consideration for postseason awards like the Butkus Award, and Weeks has the potential to do just that. A former blue-chip recruit, Weeks was a four-star prospect per On3's Industry Rankings. He was No. 15 at his position and No. 149 overall in the 2023 cycle.
