Ministry to boost supply of special grade eggs after subsidy removal
He said this would provide the public with more affordable egg options while helping to stabilise prices.
'We also aim to increase the supply of cheaper special eggs like those sold during Ramadan (March) recently, which were priced at RM5 per tray.
'This time, we're not sure what the price will be, but we are confident it will not spike uncontrollably,' he told reporters after attending Terengganu Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Aidilfitri Open House here today.
On April 30, KPKM announced the subsidy removal and stated that several intervention measures would be implemented jointly with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to minimise the impact on the people's cost of living.
Among these measures, the government has secured the industry's commitment to introduce special grade eggs at reasonable prices.
Mohamad said, in addition to special grade eggs, the public can obtain competitively priced eggs through nationwide initiatives such as Jualan Agro MADANI and Jualan Rahmah.
He also emphasised that the decision to completely end both the egg subsidy and price controls—as well as the reduction in subsidy rate from RM0.10 to RM0.05 per egg effective May 1—was made through stakeholder engagement.
'The decision was made via consultation. We negotiated first with egg producers and industry players. We also implemented the removal in a soft landing manner, not abruptly. Hence, I believe egg prices will not surge,' he said.
Meanwhile, he also encouraged the cultivation of local young coconuts, especially aromatic varieties like pandan coconuts, in response to rising demand from China.
'This presents an opportunity, for example, for Terengganu with its vast land area to focus on this crop which can generate good income. China has a population of over 1.4 billion, with more than 800 million having spending power... this is a real economic opportunity,' he said.
On April 19, Agriculture Department Director-General Datuk Nor Sam Alwi said the opening of the fresh coconut market to China under the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol marks a strengthening of biosecurity measures and the establishment of a more systematic traceability element in quality young coconut production.
He said Malaysia will export young coconuts primarily for fresh beverage consumption, with priority given to aromatic varieties such as pandan coconuts, which are known for their unique fragrance and a brix sweetness level of around 6.7.

Snapchat+ subscribers rose 42% to nearly 16 million for the quarter ended June 30. Daily active users rose 9% to 469 million, compared with estimates of 467.9 million. The company forecast third-quarter revenue between $1.48 billion and $1.51 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.48 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. It expects quarterly adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to be between $110 million and $135 million, above estimates of $111.9 million. Tok Mat: Disputed area should be called Laut Sulawesi
THE disputed maritime area off Sabah should be referred to as Laut Sulawesi, not Ambalat, as the latter is a term used by Indonesia to bolster its territorial claims, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Mohamad said the contested area includes Blocks ND6 and ND7, which Malaysia maintains lie within its sovereign waters. 'I wish to draw this August House's attention to Indonesia's reference to the area as Ambalat. Their claim encompasses parts of the Sulawesi Sea, including Blocks ND6 and ND7. 'Malaysia's position is that these blocks are part of our sovereign territory, based on international law and the 2002 ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). 'Therefore, the accurate term, in line with Malaysia's stance, is Laut Sulawesi, not Ambalat. The term Ambalat is Indonesia's nomenclature used to support its claim, and we should avoid using it,' he said. Mohamad was responding to a question about potential joint development with Indonesia in the area, which lies within the 1979 New Map of Malaysia. He reiterated that the ICJ's ruling in favour of Malaysia over Sipadan and Ligitan affirms the country's maritime rights projected from the two islands, including Blocks ND6 and ND7, now under dispute by Indonesia. Under international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, maritime boundaries are determined using the low-water line along the coast, not the high-tide mark, Mohamad noted. He said that while Malaysia abides by this principle, Indonesia has taken a differing stance. Assuring the Dewan Rakyat of Malaysia's peaceful approach, Mohamad said the matter is being handled diplomatically, in view of the strong bilateral relationship with Indonesia. 'Negotiations on the maritime boundary are ongoing through the Technical Meeting on Maritime Boundaries Delimitation between Malaysia and Indonesia, which has been in place since 2005. 'We enjoy good relations with Indonesia, 98% of it is positive. We should not allow the remaining 2% to escalate into conflict. 'Let us address that 2% calmly. Surely, we don't want to go to war over this,' he said. Mohamad reaffirmed that finalising the maritime boundary with Indonesia is a government priority and outlined several key strategies. They include concluding maritime delimitation with Indonesia through diplomatic, legal, and technical mechanisms; ensuring Sabah's involvement in any decisions affecting or bordering the state; and protecting Malaysia's strategic and security interests, particularly in natural resources, territorial waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone. On Sabah's role, Mohamad assured that the state government is fully involved in all technical discussions and negotiations. 'The Federal Government works closely with Sabah. Their representatives are included in meetings and technical negotiations on maritime boundaries with Indonesia,' he said. Mohamad also welcomed suggestions for officials from Wisma Putra or the Marine Department to brief MPs, senators and Sabah assemblymen to prevent confusion or political manipulation. 'There's no issue with conducting briefings. We can schedule them to ensure everyone understands the matter clearly. 'We don't want this to be turned into a thorn on our side or used as political fodder, especially with the upcoming state election. 'Let us not allow it to mislead the rakyat, especially our rakyat in Sabah and Sarawak,' he said.

Carzo faces RM6mil in default judgments from Maybank Islamic
KUALA LUMPUR: Carzo Holdings Bhd has been hit with two default judgments totalling nearly RM6 million, after Maybank Islamic Bhd initiated legal proceedings against its subsidiaries over unpaid banking facilities. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the group said Carzo Sdn Bhd (CZSB) and Carzo Import Sdn Bhd as well as two Carzo directors as corporate guarantor, were served with Judgments in Default dated June 9, 2025. The notices, served on Aug 4, also include statutory demands under Section 466(1)(a) of the Companies Act 2016, a prelude to potential winding-up petitions. For CZSB, the default judgment requires payment of RM759,346.63 as at Nov 30, 2024, plus additional profit charges at 2.5 per cent above the bank's base financing rate, and late payment charges dating back to December 2024. A separate amount of RM2.8 million is also claimed, subject to further charges under the Islamic Interbank Money Market rate, along with RM5,000 in legal costs. For Carzo Import, the total claim includes RM364,164.81 and RM2 million, both as at Oct 31, 2024, in addition to late payment charges and RM5,000 in legal costs. The judgments name Datuk Seri Delon Lee Kean Yip and Cheong Wai Keh as personal guarantors for both subsidiaries, while Carzo listed as the corporate guarantor. Despite the scale of the claims, the board of directors said there will be "no additional financial impact" from the judgments, nor any disruption to operations. "The board also wishes to inform that there will be no operational impact arising from the default judgments as the group had ceased its core business for the distribution of fresh fruits and fruit products for the time being since November 2024," it said. CZSB and Carzo Import were previously involved in the trading, wholesale and processing of fruits, vegetables and related food products. Carzo said it has sought legal advice on the matter and will make further announcements on any material developments in due course.
