Record-setting Fever topple Giants to secure top spot

Yahoo14 hours ago
West Coast Fever have set a new record winning streak and secured their maiden Super Netball minor premiership with a 73-56 triumph over the Giants.
Unbeaten since round two, the Fever became the first team in competition history to claim 11 consecutive victories at RAC Arena on Sunday.
They have lost just twice all season and will head into the finals as hot premiership favourites with home-court advantage.
The achievement follows consecutive one-goal preliminary final heartbreaks for the Fever since their breakthrough title three years ago.

But goal defence Sunday Aryang noted the job wasn't finished yet, with a premiership there for the taking.
"I think we'll probably sit in it until after this game," Aryang told Fox Sports when asked about the Fever's first minor premiership.
"Then we'll probably go back to focusing on the next game and just staying locked in for that as well."
West Coast, who led 37-33 after a tight first half, put a match-winning gap on the Giants with a dominant 20-11 third term and won every quarter.
Fever goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard was in fine form, nailing 63 of 66 attempts.
Aryang had three intercepts, four deflections and four defensive rebounds in her best performance of the season.
"The previous game was a bit of a grind, shutting down the goal attack, whereas this game I could have a look a bit more and just go flying for the ball, which was nice," Aryang said.
West Coast host the finals-bound Melbourne Vixens in the last round of the regular season next Sunday, while the Giants face the Melbourne Mavericks in a dead rubber.

Giants Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and Randy Rodriguez named NL All-Stars

WEST SACRAMENTO — The San Francisco Giants ' plan for success this season centered around the team's pitching. Sunday that emphasis was rewarded with three All-Star selections. Logan Webb, the Giants' ace, was named to the squad for the second consecutive year, and starter Robbie Ray will also head to the July 15 game in Atlanta along with a welcome surprise, reliever Randy Rodriguez, the first non-closer Giants reliever ever to be named an All-Star. Rodriguez pitches in both the middle and late innings, a role often overlooked when it comes to recognition, and the 25-year old is in his first full big-league season. A night before, Webb called him the best reliever in the game and added, 'I think the numbers say he's the best reliever in baseball.' Rodriguez's 0.71 ERA is tops among big-league relievers and his 1.6 WAR is tied for best with Cleveland's Cade Smith. Webb, 28, leads MLB with 120 ⅓ innings pitched, his 2.62 ERA is fifth best among NL starters and his 133 strikeouts were the second most going into Sunday night's game against the A's. He's received Cy Young votes each of the past three years, including finishing second to Blake Snell in 2023. 'He's as consistent as it gets,' third baseman Matt Chapman said. 'Every single time he goes out there, he gives us a chance to win. I think he continues to get better, he's evolved even more this year than last year, he's added some new pitches. It's just impressive. 'Every time he takes the mound, we feel like we're going to win the game.' Pitching coach J.P. Martinez agreed that Webb has taken another step forward this year, saying, 'He's finally reaching his potential after four years of being really, really good. He's just finding another level — and that's kind of what we expect from him now.' Ray is also a second-time All-Star, having made the team in 2017 with Arizona. His 2.68 ERA is eighth-best in the league, his 117 strikeouts fifth most and his .201 average against fifth best. The 2021 American League Cy Young winner, Ray is only two years removed from Tommy John surgery that included a flexor tendon repair, and he's right back to his Cy Young form — or maybe even better with the addition of a changeup that Detroit's Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal taught him. 'I just love watching Robbie throw so much, especially after all the stuff he had to come back from,' Webb said. 'I just enjoy every time he's out there, the tight pants, the grunts. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball. It's a pleasure to watch him throw.' Webb, whose final start before the break is expected to be Friday, would like to improve on his outing last year in Arlington, Texas, where he allowed three runs in his inning of work, erasing the NL's three-run lead as the AL went on to win 5-3. Ray, 33, would just love to see action — he did not play in 2017 in Miami. He's scheduled to make his final pre-break start Tuesday. But with an offday Thursday and the Giants facing the Dodgers beginning Friday, the team is likely to have him start Sunday at Oracle Park. That would render him unable to participate in Atlanta. Should Ray be on the team but ineligible to pitch, the league can replace him with another pitcher, probably a starter — but the Giants have another strong candidate in their bullpen who is more than deserving of consideration. Set-up man Tyler Rogers has a 1.70 ERA and his 0.85 walks per nine innings is the lowest in the game. Had left-hander Erik Miller, who has a 1.50 ERA, not gone on the IL with an elbow sprain Saturday, he also would be worthy of a look as a replacement.

'Didn't deserve that': F1 world in uproar after Piastri 'robbed' of victory

Oscar Piastri and the majority of F1 fans have been left fuming at his controversial second-place finish in the British Grand Prix, with many of the belief he was robbed of the victory. The Aussie driver copped a contentious 10-second penalty while leading Sunday's race, which sent him back behind eventual winner Lando Norris. Piastri was convinced he was hard done-by and asked his McLaren team to order Norris to give the position back, but his plea fell on deaf ears. In what could be a championship-defining moment, stewards ruled that Piastri braked dangerously behind a safety car that had been deployed, which caused Max Verstappen to take evasive action to avoid a collision. Stewards found that Piastri applied 59.2 PSI of brake pressure and reduced speed from 218 km/h to just to 52 km/h, which left Verstappen fuming behind him. The Dutch world champion threw up his arms in disgust as he inadvertently overtook his Aussie rival, saying: "Whoa, mate, f***, he just suddenly slows down again." Piastri was found to have braked erratically and was hit with a 10-second time penalty. And while the general consensus was that Piastri did the wrong thing, the 10-second penalty was deemed way too harsh by the majority watching on. Speaking after the race, the Aussie championship leader insisted he was "well within the rules" and that he had already performed the manoeuvre once in the race. "I don't really get it. I hit the brakes, and at the same time as I did, the lights went out on the safety car," he said. "I didn't accelerate because I can control the pace from there. "I didn't do anything differently to my first restart. I didn't go slower. I don't think Max had to evade me. So I am a bit confused to say the least. I know I deserved a lot more than I did today and when you don't get the result you deserve, it hurts. "Apparently you can't brake behind the safety car anymore. I had done it for five laps before but I'm not going to say more, I'm going to get myself in trouble. I still like Silverstone even if I don't like it today." Piastri said he knew in his heart that team bosses would never order Norris to switch with him, but he asked anyway. "I knew what the answer was going to be before I asked. But I just wanted a small glimmer of hope that I could get it back but I knew it wasn't going to happen," he admitted. "Lando didn't do anything wrong so I don't think it would have been fair to swap, but I thought I should ask. It doesn't change much for the championship. I felt I did a good job and I will use the frustration to make sure I win some more races." Many F1 fans pointed out that George Russell performed a similar move in the recent Canadian Grand Prix, but didn't cop the same penalty. Social media was flooded with complaints that Piastri had been 'robbed' and the penalty was too heavy, and even Verstappen admitted he was surprised by the 10-second sanction. 'I only found out after the race [that Piastri was penalised]," he said post-race. "It has happened to me a few times, this kind of scenario. I find it strange that Oscar is the first to receive 10 seconds for it.' Oscar Piastri was robbed today. Harsh, imho. #F1 #BritishGP — Rob Myers (@RobLMyers) July 6, 2025 I've seen harsher incidents penalised for a lot less than what Oscar Piastri did! Horrible decision by the stewards giving Oscar Piastri a 10 second penalty! #F1 #BritishGP — Trystan Spooner (@TrystanSpooner) July 6, 2025 McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described the punishment as "very harsh", and pointed out the safety car was only called very late. 'We'll have to see also if other competitors kind of made the situation look worse than what it is, because we know that the race craft for some competitors, definitely, there's also the ability to make others look like they are causing severe infringement when they are not," Stella said. 'So, a few things to review, but in itself, now the penalty has been decided, has been served, and we move on. I think we will see if there's anything to learn on our side, and I'm sure Oscar will use this motivation for being even more determined for the races to come and try and win as many races as possible.' Australia wins second test against West Indies by 133 runs to clinch series

ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada — Australia completed its recovery to win the second test against West Indies by 133 runs with a day to spare, clinching the series in the process. Australia dismissed West Indies for 143 in 34.3 overs on day four to take an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the three-test series. On Saturday, half-centuries by Steve Smith and Cameron Green had helped to put Australia back in charge after the visitors lost early wickets in their second innings. Resuming Sunday on 221-7 — and a lead of 254 runs — Australia struggled and was all out for 243, setting West Indies a winning target of 277. Shamar Joseph took 4-66. At 33-4, West Indies' chase was in trouble. Pacer Mitchell Starc finished with 3-24. Captain Roston Chase top scored for West Indies in the second innings with 34. The third test starts Saturday in Kingston. ___ AP cricket:
