Retegui isn't simply Aubameyang's successor, he's a game-changer
Few can match the Gabonese international for his showmanship, but that is secondary to his ability in front of goal; there's no point being a 'showman', as the 36-year-old describes himself, if you're not delivering where it matters most: on the pitch.
And in what proved his only season at Al Qadsiah, after arriving last summer from French giants Olympique Marseille, the former Arsenal and Barcelona star did just that.
Fronting the ambitious club's attack upon their return to the Roshn Saudi League, Aubameyang scored 17 goals and recorded three assists as Al Qadsiah finished an impressive fourth.
Yet, when player and club agreed to part ways last week, manager Michel and his employers had their work cut out finding a replacement who could deliver as Aubameyang did.
However, not only did they do just that, you could even say they've upgraded. The man to replace Aubameyang? Well, how about Mateo Retegui, the reigning golden boot from Italy's Serie A.
The Argentine-born Italian international put pen to paper this week on a four-year deal in what is a massive coup for both the club and RSL. Retegui reportedly had a line of suitors, including Italian giants Juventus.
Ten years younger than Aubameyang, the forward arrives at the east-coast club at the peak of his powers after a breakout season with Atalanta.
Having joined the fast-rising Serie A side from Genoa the previous summer, he netted 25 goals and chipped in with eight assists to fire the Bergamo outfit to a third-placed finish.
It's been a meteoric rise for the San Fernando-born striker, who began his career with Boca Juniors. But it was on loan at Buenos Aires side Tigre that he first started to flourish, scoring 30 goals in 48 games.
It was there that he was granted an, perhaps unexpected, opportunity of a lifetime: to play for the Italian national team. At the time, Italy were desperate for a free-scoring frontman under Roberto Mancini, a man who is no stranger to Saudi Arabian football.
With Retegui's maternal grandfather hailing from Italy, as well as his great-grandparents on his father's side, Mancini presented the chance to represent the Azzurri. It's one Retegui grasped with both hands, grabbing a goal on debut against England in March 2023.
His rapid ascension to the national team quickly captured the attention of clubs in Serie A, with Genoa snaring his signature.
Retegui's first season in Italy was solid, if unspectacular, with seven league goals. Still, it was enough the pique the interest of Atalanta, who had finished fourth that season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
It was in Bergamo, in the north of Italy, under Gian Piero Gasperini that Retegui's talent really flourished. A brace on the opening day of the 2024-25 season was a perfect way to win over his new fans and gave a glimpse of what was to come.
At the 10-match mark, he had 10 goals. From there, he struck another 15 times to conclude the campaign as Serie A's leading scorer. In fact, he was six clear of his closest challenger in the race for the Paolo Rossi Award, Fiorentina's Moise Kean.
'Retegui has had an extraordinary season,' Gasperini said. 'He has scored with his right foot, his left, his head – thanks also to the contribution of the team. His goals have been decisive for our campaign.'
After helping Atalanta secure their equal-best league finish, more prominent clubs began circling Retegui, with Juventus apparently keen on bringing him to Turin. Yet it was Al Qadsiah's pitch that ultimately sealed his signature.
'I'm very happy; this is something I truly wanted,' Retegui said of his move to Al Qadsiah. 'I'm eager to know the team, the coach and everyone working here. It's a big step for me and I'm ready to give my best.'
The expectations of him are simple: score goals and help the upwardly mobile Al Khobar club win.
After an impressive first season back in the RSL, breaking into the top four and making the final of the King's Cup, the side from Al Khobar are clearly building for better.
Retegui, aged 26 and therefore set to spend his peak years in the Kingdom, has patently been signed with that mission in mind.
'I spoke with the coach about the quality of the players here,' explained the Italian, whose potential partnership with Mexican marksman Julian Quinones is mouthwatering, indeed. 'The expectations are high, and the team has a great mentality.
'I hope to be one of the reasons the fans are happy this season. I hope to score many goals and bring joy to everyone around.
'I'm ready for this moment, full of energy and determination to help the team. I'll give everything I have, and with teamwork, I believe we can achieve great things.'
Arriving in rude health and fresh off winning the golden boot in one of Europe's top-five leagues, Retegui is more than just a replacement for Aubameyang. He is a game-changer for his increasingly enterprising new employers.

Alexander Isak eyes Newcastle exit with Liverpool monitoring situation
Alexander Isak wants to explore options at other clubs and a transfer away from Newcastle United, potentially throwing Eddie Howe's summer plans into chaos. The 25-year-old was not included in last week's friendly defeat to Celtic due to "speculation" around his future, and has now not travelled to Singapore for pre-season due to a thigh injury. Newcastle have been made aware that Isak is keen to consider his future elsewhere. The Independent understands that Howe had already privately told prominent figures at the club this summer that he was concerned about the player's situation. That view also precedes reports of Liverpool's public interest last week. Newcastle's position remains the same, however, which is that Isak is not for sale. Their stance has also been bolstered by the fact that he still has three years left on his current contract. There are also no ongoing talks over a new deal. An offer in the region of £150m may test that, though, especially with the knowledge that the player wants to consider his options. The big question, however, is where such an offer comes from. There are only about eight clubs that could afford such a deal, but almost none of them have the PSR headroom or squad need to make it happen. Liverpool have just spent £79m on Hugo Ekitike, a deal that had been linked to Isak's future given Newcastle's own interest in the French forward. That feasibly rules them out of a future move, although there is the potential twist should Darwin Nunez or Luis Diaz leave. Liverpool do have PSR headroom but want to ensure they have a sustainable squad with a manageable wage bill. Bayern Munich have spoken to Liverpool about Diaz, but it has not yet reached the point of an offer. Liverpool's current stance is that they are comfortable with their options at centre-forward and feel they have their number-nine in Ekitike, but a move for Isak this window has not been ruled out. Mikel Arteta has long been an admirer of the Swede, and would have love to do a deal, but it is seen as virtually impossible that Arsenal's Kroenke ownership will extend the budget. The club are also on the brink of signing Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres for less than half of Isak's anticipated price. Chelsea have now ruled out a move, despite previous interest in Isak, and representing one of the few clubs with the available budget. Any move for Isak would have also required a deviation from recent targets, as they continue to pursue moves for Xavi Simons and Jarrel Hato. While virtually every club sees Isak as an outstanding talent, there is some doubt about whether £150m is worth it for a player who has recently struggled to consistently play in full European schedules without injury.

UFC 319's Bryan Battle: 'I'm gonna wipe the floor' with Nursulton Ruziboev
Bryan Battle is back to middleweight again, for now. Battle (12-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) popped onto the UFC's scene as a middleweight on Season 29 of "The Ultimate Fighter," and fought his first two fights on the big stage in the weight class. He won his first two fights in the UFC at 185 pounds, but then switched to welterweight, where he made his last seven appearances, putting together a 5-1 record with one no contest. Now, Battle is moving back up, and his reason is pretty straightforward. It's not a permanent move either, but he'll be ready to answer the call for welterweight or middleweight fights in the future. "It was a matter of I wanted to fight, and this was the fastest way to get a fight," Battle told MMA Junkie. "I told my agent, 170, 185 – it's all the same to me. There's little tradeoffs in each direction, but big guys, smaller guys, it doesn't matter. I'm a fighter. I train to fight people. I train to whoop everyone's ass. That's what I'm excited to do this fight. Go out there and just remind everybody who 'The Butcher' is and what he does." Battle's middleweight return takes place at UFC 319 at the United Center in Chicago, where he will face Nursulton Ruziboev. The Uzbekistan-born fighter quickly turned heads with his finishing power when he entered the UFC in 2023, but Battle isn't worried about the challenge that lies ahead. "He's a big, aggressive guy," Battle said. "A lot of people, when they fight him, I guess because he's so ugly, it's easy for him to intimidate people. You know, big, scary, ugly foreign dude. I watched his tape. He seems like a tough guy. He seems like a game challenge, but nothing I'm too concerned about. I feel really good. I feel really locked in right now. I feel like I'm gonna wipe the floor with this guy. Whether it was someone who made welterweight before or if he was just a real middleweight, it doesn't f*cking matter. He's just the next person whose ass I'm gonna whoop." Ruziboev (36-9-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has recorded three finishes in his four UFC victories. He's a finisher, but so is Battle, with five of his seven UFC wins coming before the final horn. "The Butcher" intends to tally another on Aug. 16 to be the first to finish Ruziboev in the UFC. "I won't want to reveal too much, but I see my opportunities," Battle said. "Maybe we'll get him out of there quick, maybe we gotta go to hell. The one thing I can confidently say, it's not gonna go to the judges' scorecards."
