Menfi calls from Seville for international support to rebuild Libya
His remarks came during the opening of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development held in Seville, Spain, on Monday, with the participation of several heads of state and representatives of international organizations, including King Felipe VI, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Menfi said that Libya is at a pivotal moment in its history, referencing the challenges the country has faced in recent years, including political, security, and economic crises, as well as the natural disaster caused by Storm Daniel, which struck the city of Derna and areas in the Green Mountain region in September 2023.
Menfi also emphasized the importance of directing international funding towards projects in education, healthcare, and renewable energy. He noted that Libya possesses natural resources and a promising sovereign wealth fund but requires structural reforms to enhance transparency and accountability.
Menfi concluded by reaffirming the Council's commitment to implementing effective standards in public financial management in cooperation with international partners. He expressed hope that what he described as the 'Seville Commitment' would mark a starting point for a fairer global financial system—one that supports developing countries, alleviates debt burdens, and promotes stability in Africa and worldwide.
