It does not behove Governor to say Himachal will become Udta Punjab: CM

News186 days ago
Shimla, Jul 28 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday took strong exception to the recent remarks of Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on drug menace in the state and said that it does not behove a person holding a constitutional office to make such statements.
The Governor had, on Thursday, expressed his displeasure over the 'lack of government rehabilitation centres" in the state and warned that if immediate action is not taken to eradicate drug menace, Himachal Pradesh would become 'Udta Punjab" in the next five years.
Pointing out the cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act rose by 340 per cent from around 500 in 2012 to about 2,200 in 2023, the Governor had said, 'There is only one rehab run by the Red Cross in Kullu. We have been hearing that land is being identified to set up a rehabilitation centre in Sirmaur district, but nothing is moving on the ground." Talking to mediapersons here, Sukhu said, 'The Governor is holding a constitutional and dignified office and we respect him. But making such statements does not behove him. We should all respect the people of Himachal Pradesh." Detailing his government's efforts to curb drug use in the state, Sukhu said, 'No previous governments have done what we have done against the drugs. Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, which enables the detention of repeat offenders involved in drug-trafficking, was invoked for the first time in Himachal Pradesh within three months after the formation of the Congress government," he said.
The chief minister informed that Rs 43 crore worth of illegally acquired properties of drug-traffickers have been seized and directions were given for mapping of all the 3,575 panchayats in the state. A head constable as well as a constable would be deployed for every 5-6 panchayats to dedicatedly work against drug abuse. The mapping would reveal a drug abuser and the source of drugs, he said.
'I will also apprise the Governor of steps taken against drug abuse and inform him that several non-governmental organisations are working in this direction. For the first time, a Nasha Nivaran Kendra (state-level model drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre) was opened at Kotla Barog in Pachhad sub-division of Sirmour district," he said. Drugs Seized During Party At Telangana Farmhouse, 6 Techies Arrested

Six IT professionals have been arrested after drugs were recovered during a raid at a farmhouse near Hyderabad. The farmhouse in Telangana's Rangareddy district was booked by an IT professional named Abhijit Banerjee for a birthday celebration. After receiving a tip-off, police raided the property and found that those at the party were consuming drugs and foreign liquor. Drugs, including LSD and hashish, worth Rs 2 lakh, along with three luxury cars were seized. The six arrested techies were tested using drug detection kits and were found to be positive for drug consumption. The search to find two individuals who were at the party is on. A case has also been registered against the farmhouse's manager for allowing its use for illegal activities. The action follows other high-profile incidents in the Cyberabad area. In recent months, law enforcement has busted a "mujra party" where marijuana was seized, and a rave party, where a significant cache of drugs including marijuana, OG Kush, psychedelic mushrooms and charas, were recovered. The crackdown also led to the arrest of a hotel entrepreneur involved in a transnational drug network, from whom police seized cocaine and other narcotics.

One Year On, Police Nabs Lover Who Helped Delhi Woman Kill Her Husband, Dump Body

Soniya, a resident of Delhi's Alipur, allegedly conspired with her boyfriend Rohit to kill her husband Pritam and dump his body in a drain in Haryana's Sonipat. The Delhi Crime Branch solved a year-old murder case that had puzzled investigators for long, by arresting a woman and her boyfriend for allegedly conspiring to kill her husband and dump his body in Haryana's Sonipat, officials said on Sunday. The accused have been identified as Soniya (34), a resident of Delhi's Alipur, and her partner Rohit, a resident of Jaji village in Sonipat. Crime Branch officials said the case dates back to July 2024, when the decomposed body of an unidentified man was found in a drain near Agwanpur village under Gannaur police station limits in Sonipat. Despite a murder case being registered, the matter remained unsolved and the deceased could not be identified, while the culprits managed to roam free. However, a breakthrough came when the Delhi Crime Branch, led by Inspector Sandeep Tushir, started investigating the long-standing disappearance of Pritam Prakash (42), a proclaimed offender and a history-sheeter from Alipur. An Unsolved Mystery For A Year According to officials, Pritam's wife Soniya had lodged a missing complaint on July 20, 2024, saying she had not seen her since the intervening night of July 5-6. The last active location of Pritam's phone was traced to Jaji village in Sonipat. Further surveillance led the team to Rohit, who was allegedly using the deceased man's phone. Rohit initially tried to divert the investigation by saying that he had purchased the phone from an unknown person, but after sustained interrogation, he confessed to his affair with Soniya and revealed the murder plot. Rohit informed the police that Soniya had hired a contract killer to murder her husband and had given him the victim's phone after the crime. He confessed that the murder took place in July 2024 and that the body was disposed of in a drain. Soniya was promptly taken into custody. After initially misleading the police, she later broke down when confronted with evidence and confessed to having paid her sister's brother-in-law to kill Pritam. How Was Pritam Killed? Soniya told police that Pritam, who was involved in over 10 criminal cases, including robbery and kidnapping, was abusive and addicted to drugs. She had asked Rohit to kill her husband, but he demanded Rs 6 lakh by saying he alone could not commit the act and had to hire someone else. Rohit soon went underground after a case was registered against him. After a heated argument on July 2, 2024, Soniya travelled to her sister's house in Gannaur in Rohit's taxi and when Pritam came to take her home, she convinced Vijay to murder him for Rs 1 lakh. On the night of July 5, Pritam stayed back at the house and was killed by Vijay while others were asleep. His body was wrapped in cloth and dumped in a drain in Sonipat. Soniya returned to Delhi the next day and filed a false missing complaint. She also sold Pritam's three-wheeler for Rs 4.5 lakh, gave Rohit Rs 2.8 lakh and paid Rs 50,000 to Vijay. A few months later, she handed Pritam's phone to Rohit with instructions to destroy it. Instead, Rohit kept and used the phone, which ultimately led to their arrest. Meanwhile, Vijay, the third accused, was arrested in an unrelated theft case in June 2025 and is currently in custody at a jail in Haryana. Officials stated that DNA samples collected during the autopsy of the unidentified body in July 2024 had been preserved, and further forensic analysis is still underway. ‘Not My Father's Money': Will Maharashtra Minister's Remark After Cash Bag Row Prove Costly For Him?

Shinde Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat's remark comes days after CM Fadnavis, in a cabinet meeting, issued a strict warning to all ministers, saying 'nonsense' won't be tolerated Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader and Maharashtra's Minister for Social Justice Sanjay Shirsat is once again in the middle of a political storm. Just weeks after a video went viral showing him smoking next to a bag allegedly filled with cash, Shirsat has now stirred fresh controversy with another careless statement — this time while addressing a public function in Akola. Speaking at the inauguration of a Social Justice Bhavan, Shirsat made an off-the-cuff remark that has not gone down well with political circles. 'Ask for Rs 5, Rs 10 or Rs 15 crore — I'll approve it immediately. It's government money, not my father's," he said, triggering fresh outrage over the tone and attitude of public representatives handling public funds. This latest statement is likely to test Fadnavis' patience. While the CM has been trying to steer the government clear of needless controversies, repeated incidents like these — especially from the same minister — are causing political embarrassment. Sources suggest that Fadnavis is not pleased, and action may be on the cards if Shirsat doesn't fall in line. Interestingly, in the same speech, Shirsat also advised NCP MLA Amol Mitkari to speak cautiously. 'You give good TRP to the media, but don't talk too much. Otherwise, you'll be in the same situation as me," he said — almost joking about his own previous run-ins with the media. The comment reflects both a lack of remorse and a misplaced confidence that such controversies will blow over without consequence. What's worrying party leaders, however, is the pattern — Shirsat's previous video already put him in a tight spot, with his party leadership reportedly expressing disapproval in private. Now, with this fresh controversy, murmurs within the Mahayuti alliance have started again. Shirsat's refusal to tone down his words despite clear instructions has also reignited public debate over how ministers treat taxpayers' money. Opposition parties are already sharpening their attack, questioning whether the BJP-Sena-led alliance is serious about governance or simply brushing aside such irresponsible behaviour. As public pressure builds, all eyes are now on the Chief Minister. Will he act against Sanjay Shirsat this time, or will this too be let go as 'just another slip of tongue"? — Rohit Pawar (@RRPSpeaks) August 3, 2025 Opposition reacts Shiv Sena UBT leader Aditya Thackeray on microblogging website X had posted video of Minister Sanjay Shirsat and tagged CMO Maharashtra and wished him 'happy friendship day". He further wrote, 'Due to compulsion of alliance Dharma, Minister who was caught playing cards on mobile was given Sports department. Now will this minister get Finance department?" NCP(SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also posted same video of Shirsat and slammed him for the language and tone which he had used. 'Minister Shirsath, even if the money doesn't come from your personal household, it certainly belongs to the common people of the state whom you call #MyLord during election time! You being minister in the state govt who has given responsibility utilize this money is merely temporary trustees. Therefore, no one has the right to recklessly squander government funds or 'fill their bags' just because it's not their personal money."
