Open firing reported at dance and art centre, probe underway
PUNE: An incident of open firing was reported at Ambika Kala Kendra, a dance and art centre in Vakhari in Daund tehsil on Monday night between 10:30pm -11:30pm. Pune Rural Police have confirmed that no one was injured in the firing. Open firing incident reported at Ambika Kala Kendra, a dance and art centre in Vakhari in Daund tehsil, on Monday night. ((PIC FOR REPRESENTATION)) According to the police, three persons - Balasaheb Mandekar, Chandrakant Marane and Ganpat Jagtap - entered the centre's premises and one of them allegedly fired a single round in the air inside a dance rehearsal room. All three accused are currently absconding, police said. 'The staffers at Ambika Kala Kendra initially denied the incident, but later admitted that a round was fired during a dance performance,' said a senior officer from Pune Rural Police. Babasaheb Rajashree Andhare, 38, a manager at Ambika Kala Kendra, filed a complaint at Yavat Police Station, after which a case was registered under section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 3(25) of the Arms Act. Police said as per Andhare, the accused had initially booked the hall for two parties. At around 10:30pm they booked it for a third party, which was joined by five women. Since Tuesday , reports about the firing incident were circulating, prompting police to visit two art centres in the area and question the staff. However, no leads emerged initially. Police also cross-checked medico-legal cases (MLCs) in nearby hospitals but found no evidence of injuries. Meanwhile, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader and MLA Rohit Pawar on Wednesday criticised the police through a post on X , alleging that the main accused is the brother of a ruling party MLA and that a young woman was injured in the firing. 'Instead of finding out who fired the gun, it is being said that the police - under pressure from those in power - are trying to cover up the case,' Pawar wrote in his post. He further questioned whether the accused would face action or escape due to political connections. 'Is this how power is being misused?' he asked. However, the police have said that they have not established any political links at this stage or confirmed whether the weapon used was a licensed firearm or a country-made pistol. They have also reiterated that no injuries were reported in the incident and that a thorough investigation is underway.

Fugitive hiding in US among 12 booked for petrol bomb attack on Ludhiana realtor, 6 held
The Ludhiana Rural Police Wednesday arrested six suspects while six others including a fugitive hiding in the United States (US) are absconding, in connection with the alleged petrol bomb and gunfire attack outside the house of a realtor in Baddowal village of the district that happened in wee hours on July 10. Police said that the attack was orchestrated by Kunwarveer Singh, a history-sheeter currently hiding in the US. The case pertains to a recent petrol bomb and gunfire attack at the house of Yadwinder Singh alias Yadi in Baddowal, carried out in wee hours of July 10. DSP (Dakha) Varinder Singh Khosa said that arrested suspects are Harshpreet Singh Bhullar alias Harsh of Deep Nagar of Patiala, Dhruv Thakur of Jagdish Colony of Patiala, Ekjot Singh of Adarsh Colony of Bhadson Road of Patiala, Gurinder Brar alias Guri of Nihal Singh Wala of Moga, Baljinder Singh of Village Bhamma Landa of Moga and Amrik Singh of Village Jawahar Singh Wala of Ferozepur. The police claimed recovery of two vehicles used in the crime along with petrol bombs. DSP Khosa said that the crime was not a random act but a carefully plotted assault, stemming from a land dispute between Yadwinder Singh and one Dildar Singh, a resident of Village Jainpur. The latter allegedly reached out to Kunwarveer Singh—currently hiding in the US—to arrange the attack, said police. 'Dildar Singh contacted Kunwarveer Singh in the US who further hired local assailants including Harshpreet Bhullar, Sahil Malhotra, Sahil alias Matru, and Riaz to execute the attack,' said the DSP. On the intervening night of July 9 and 10, the accused hurled a petrol bomb at Yadwinder Singh's residence in Baddowal. As the victim came out to check, the attackers opened fire. Although Yadwinder miraculously escaped the firing, the accused also filmed the attack on their phone, said police. According to police, the assailants used a stolen Hyundai i20 for the attack. The vehicle was procured by Ekjot Singh and was under his possession for 15 days prior to the incident. Among the accused still on the run are Dildar Singh, Kunwarveer Singh (in the US), Sahil Malhotra, Sahil alias Matru, Riaz from Patiala, and Jazzy. The DSP confirmed that the FIR, initially registered at Mullanpur Dakha police station under sections 125 (acts that endanger human life or personal safety due to rashness or negligence) and 326 (offense of mischief by injury, inundation, fire, or explosive substance) of the BNS, and sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act, has now been expanded with the inclusion of additional sections 109 (attempt to murder), 249 (offense of harbouring an offender), 3 (5) (common intention) of BNS.
