Medical College hostel in Vadodara earns green building tag
The nine-storey high-rise, part of Central Gujarat's largest govt hospital complex, has received a 3-star rating under GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The hostel, completed in March last year, was funded by the department of health and family welfare of the Gujarat govt and constructed by the state's project implementation unit.
"We voluntarily undertook this initiative to reduce emissions and make the building environmentally sustainable," said Dr Ranjan Aiyer, medical superintendent of SSG Hospital.
The green building certification was carried out by N K Ojha, former registrar of MS University. "The campus also has a proposal to carry out the greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions report, wherein the emissions will be calculated, and attempts will be made to reduce emissions and then transfer the leftover emissions to carbon handprint to convert it into a zero-emissions campus," said Ojha.
As part of the green building certification, the hostel building, located on a 4,008.06 sqm site with a 14,820 sqm built-up area, underwent a water audit to ensure that the water footprint is below the standard norms.
"Water consumption was reduced by 25-30% with water-efficient plumbing fixtures and a water-efficient irrigation system. Also, energy and water meters were installed to monitor the consumption of energy and water and take corrective measures if consumption is more than the design case," said Ojha.
Energy-efficient lighting fixtures, electrical equipment, and enhanced daylighting will ensure that energy consumption is saved in the building.
"Similarly, enhanced ventilation and cross ventilation will provide comfort to the occupants even without air-conditioners," he said.
"Adoption of green procurement policy, green housekeeping chemicals, creating a barrier-free environment, providing preferred parking for physically handicapped, and increasing accessibility to basic services within walking distance were among the other measures that were taken in the process," added Ojha.

GMCH, AIIMS-N Set Benchmarks In Organ Donation & Transplant, Win National Awards
Nagpur: The city has emerged as a national beacon in the field of organ donation and transplantation, with the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, and AIIMS-Nagpur receiving prestigious awards at the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) organized in New Delhi on Saturday. GMCH was conferred the 'Best Brain Stem Death Certifying Team' award while AIIMS-Nagpur bagged the 'Emerging Govt Institution in Organ Donation and Transplantation' award. The awards, presented by Union health minister JP Nadda at the event organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, mark a significant milestone in Vidarbha's growing leadership in public healthcare and transplant services. On behalf of GMCH, medical superintendent Dr Avinash Gawande received the award that recognizes exemplary work in facilitating organ donation through accurate and ethical certification procedures. Over the past year, GMCH facilitated 11 cadaveric organ donations, resulting in the retrieval of 21 kidneys, 10 livers, and 18 corneas. The hospital has so far performed 90 kidney transplants, including India's first robotic kidney transplant in a govt hospital conducted on July 20, 2025. AIIMS-Nagpur was honoured for its rapid and impactful entry into the organ transplantation space. Since initiating its transplant programme in December 2022, AIIMS-Nagpur recorded 22 deceased organ donations, including 18 brain stem deaths (BSD) and 4 Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) cases. Notably, AIIMS-Nagpur became the first AIIMS in the country and only the third medical institution in India to successfully perform a DCD-based organ transplant, setting a precedent for other govt institutions. Speaking on the national recognition for GMCH, Dr Gawande said, "This reflects the commitment of our entire team to provide ethical, advanced, and life-saving care through organ transplantation." Dr PP Joshi, executive director of AIIMS-Nagpur, stressed that this is just the beginning. "AIIMS-Nagpur is committed to making a long-term impact in this field. We aim to create a model that blends clinical excellence with compassion and public awareness," he said. GMCH dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye announced that the Superspeciality Hospital (SSH) is ready to handle all kinds of organ transplants. "The heart transplant is expected to begin within two months. We are technically and medically ready for kidney and liver transplants, and heart transplant capability is on the immediate horizon," he said. # MAJOR PUSH FOR ORGAN DONATION — GMCH-Nagpur Award: Best Brain Stem Death Certifying Team Brain Stem Death Donations (last 1 year): 11 Organs Retrieved: Kidneys 21; Livers 10; Corneas 18 Total Kidney Transplants Performed: 90 — AIIMS-Nagpur Award: Emerging Govt Institution in Organ Donation and Transplantation Total Kidney Transplants: 46: Live Donor: 14; Deceased Donor: 32 Total Deceased Donors: 22 Bone Marrow Transplants: 11 Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

In Madurai, a total of 1,005 people turned up at the camp held at Govt Model Girls Higher Secondary School at Othakadai. Commercial taxes minister P Moorthy presided over the inauguration. In Trichy, the camp was launched by municipal administration minister K N Nehru at Thillai Nagar. Officials said that 45 such camps will be conducted in the city. Deputy director of health services (DDHS), Madurai, Dr P Kumaragurubaran, said there were facilities for ECG, echo tests, x-rays, and scans in the camp. After registration, blood sample of the patients was collected, before they were sent to the general physician. They were further advised to go to specialists, the DDHS said. "They leave the premises with their medical report as well as the medicines prescribed," he said. Nehru said patients requiring follow-ups and intensive treatments will be treated using the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance (CMCHIS) scheme. Disability certificates can also be obtained from the camp. Those requiring cataract surgeries were referred to KAPV govt medical college hospital. Officials said Ayushman Bharath Health Account (ABHA) cards were provided for beneficiaries based on their Aadhaar card. The Madurai camp also had a cancer screening facility for cervical cancer and breast cancer, both of which can be identified immediately. In paediatrics, a six-year-old was identified with heart disease and referred to a govt hospital. In obstetrics and gynaecology, doctors observed anaemia and high blood pressure in most patients. They were made aware of cervical cancer screening to be undertaken every three years for married women, and how to identify breast cancer at home. District collector K J Praveen Kumar and Govt Rajaji Hospital dean Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar visited the camp. Areas concentrated with urban poor in Trichy city will be focused in the next set of health camps expected to go on for a year. Reacting to a question on a case filed by AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam challenging the usage of CM Stalin's name in govt schemes, Nehru said, "Even they (ADMK) launched several schemes after their leader Amma (J Jayalalithaa)."
