David Ornstein: Newcastle €80m bid rejected in striker pursuit
RB Leipzig Reject €80m Offer for Benjamin Sesko
Newcastle United's ambitious summer continues, but their latest move has hit a wall. According to The Athletic, the Magpies' €80million bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has fallen short of the Bundesliga club's valuation. The proposed deal was structured at €75m upfront with €5m in potential add-ons, but Leipzig appear firm on a package that includes add-ons and a sell-on clause, making Newcastle's offer insufficient.
Sesko, 22, is one of the most sought-after young strikers in Europe. His tally of 39 goals and 8 assists in 87 games for Leipzig underscores why Newcastle, alongside Manchester United and other Premier League giants, are circling.
Isak Uncertainty Sparks Striker Search
Newcastle's interest in Sesko comes amid growing speculation around Alexander Isak. The Swedish international, who reportedly wants to leave, is a target for Liverpool. As The Athletic revealed, Newcastle rejected a £110million bid from the Premier League champions, but Liverpool remain keen.
Isak's pre-season absence was officially due to a thigh issue, yet unnamed sources told The Athletic that he preferred to be omitted while his future remains in limbo. Isak has since returned to training in England after a solo stint at Real Sociedad.
Competition Heats Up for Sesko Signature
Newcastle aren't alone in chasing Sesko. Manchester United are also interested, while Arsenal, who previously monitored the Slovenian, moved instead for Viktor Gyokeres. Chelsea, long-term admirers of Sesko, opted for Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer.

Sesko's contract with Leipzig runs until 2029, and although a €65m release clause existed in his previous deal, his new agreement reportedly contains a gentleman's agreement allowing an exit for the right project.
What Newcastle's Next Move Could Be
The Sesko rejection raises questions about Newcastle's transfer direction. Do they push harder for Sesko or pivot to another target? Much hinges on Isak's future — if he leaves, reinforcements will be vital.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis
From a Newcastle fan's perspective, the failed Sesko bid is both frustrating and promising. It's clear the club are being proactive, identifying one of Europe's most talented young forwards and putting serious money on the table. An €80m offer isn't pocket change — it shows ambition.
However, RB Leipzig standing firm is a reality check. Fans will wonder: why didn't we meet their terms if we're serious? The situation with Isak adds more pressure. If he's unsettled, Newcastle risk entering the season without a settled striker — a dangerous gamble.
Some might feel Sesko is still raw for such a price, especially with only two seasons in Germany under his belt. Yet, with 16 goals in 41 caps for Slovenia, he's proven at international level. Supporters know Newcastle can't lag behind Liverpool, Arsenal or Man United in the transfer market.
Ultimately, fans will want clarity — will Isak stay or go? And if he leaves, can we land Sesko or someone of similar calibre? Newcastle are at a crossroads. The ambition is admirable, but execution must follow.

We could even see the Reds complete another British record deal - having paid up to £116m for Wirtz - depending on what happens with Alexander Isak. And although it's unlikely that he arrives this summer, there is another versatile attacker appearing on the Reds' radar. Baris Alper Yilmaz, 25, won the Turkish league and cup double with Galatasaray last season. Baris Alper Yilmaz linked with Liverpool The Turkey international - who is equally comfortable playing left or right wing - scored 14 goals and added six assists overall for the Istanbul giants. Following another stellar campaign, he has been mooted as a potential departure - with Turkish reports suggesting that West Ham could be a destination. However, his coach, Okan Buruk, believes he is TOO GOOD for the Hammers and should instead hold out one more year for Liverpool to come calling. Gala coach says wait for Liverpool That's according to a new report from Galatasaray reporter Ali Naci Küçük, who discussed the player's transfer situation on the SkySpor YouTube channel. "Barış has no intention of leaving," the report said. "Barış Alper Yılmaz has a truly special and distinct place for Okan Buruk. 'Coach Okan told Barış, 'Europe's eyes are on Galatasaray right now... Instead of going to West Ham, go to Tottenham or Liverpool.'"

German finance minister to push for steel quotas on Washington trip
BERLIN (Reuters) -German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil will advocate for a quota system on steel exports to be included in the EU's trade deal with the United States at a meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Scott Bessent, later on Monday, he told a radio broadcaster. "There is talk of a quota system for steel, and it would be good if there were one," Klingbeil told Deutschlandfunk radio on Monday before his planned meeting in Washington. There are a number of chapters that have not yet been finalised in the trade deal struck, said Klingbeil, and steel is a particularly important issue for the German economy and jobs. "I will test out what steps the American government is prepared to take and what the solution might look like," said Klingbeil, even though the EU is responsible for negotiations. The EU's trade deal with Trump in July was greeted with a mix of relief and anger, with tariffs set at 15% for most products but negotiations continuing for certain sectors, including steel and aluminium, which carry tariffs of 50%. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had said on Friday the EU will negotiate with the United States on steel, with a focus on quotas that can be exported without too high tariffs. Klingbeil also urged quick clarification of other outstanding details in the trade dispute, including the investments promised by the EU and in the energy sector. "It should happen in the next few days," he said. Sign in to access your portfolio

This is a new dynasty that is tailored more in their image, and a gradual stepping away from the Jurgen Klopp era, which was undeniably successful at Liverpool. Nonetheless, new ideas and fresh faces are always welcome in order to inspire an evolution and that is what Hughes will be wanting to achieve. These changes do not just involve players coming and going. We have seen a number of staff changes as well with the likes of Xavi Valero and Giovanni van Bronckhorst appointed in prominent positions in Arne Slot's backroom. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Not to mention it's not just the first team making changes but the academy as well. Notably Barry Lewtas, the club's U21 coach and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, the club's U18 coach have both left the club. They have been replaced by Rob Page at U21 level, and Simon Wiles at U18 level. The duo come with impressive resumes. Page achieved a lot of success with Wales at senior level and he was very effective at promoting young Welsh talent into the national team. Wiles has worked at Salford City's first team and was poached from Manchester United in what is regarded as a major coup by the Reds. He's not the only new addition to the club's academy either.
