2025 Buffalo Bills training camp preview: Running backs
The Buffalo Bills are moving into their next major offseason phase in due time: Training camp.
The Bills will kick off their 2025 training camp on July 23 at St. John Fisher University. As with every offseason, Bills Wire will examine each position group ahead of this pivotal time on the football calendar.
Today's training camp preview will focus on Buffalo's quarterback situation.
Our 2025 running backs preview can be found below:
At the top
James Cook will once again lead the way for the Bills. Cook eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing barrier for the second consecutive season, ending the year with 1,009 yards on 202 carries. Cook was a threat in the passing game as well, catching 32 passes for 258 receiving yards.
Cook broke out, finding the end zone 18 times (16 rushing and 2 receiving) last year.
While Cook played in fewer than half of the offensive snaps last year, his efficiency when he has the ball in his hands makes him the first option out of the backfield. Cook's elusiveness from the handoff and improvements in the receiving game make him a three-down offensive weapon.
Depth chart
According to quarterback Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott, the Bills have the best third-down back in the game, Ty Johnson. Johnson doesn't put up gaudy numbers, but the veteran always seems to make things happen when the ball is in his possession. Johnson exploded against his former team, the Detroit Lions, in Week 15, catching five passes for 114 yards. In addition, Johnson made arguably the best catch of the postseason against Denver in the Super Wild Card round of the playoffs.
The Bills also have Ray Davis in the fold. A 2024 fourth-round pick, Davis is a solid depth option for Buffalo. He is a strong runner between the tackles. During his rookie year, Davis carried the ball 113 times for 442 yards and three touchdowns. The Kentucky product added 17 receptions for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
Buffalo brought back Frank Gore Jr. on a reserve/futures contract. Veteran Darrynton Evans rounds out the group. Both Gore Jr. and Evans will most likely land on the team's practice squad this year.
In 2025...
The most intriguing offseason story centers on Cook and his contract status. Cook enters the final year of his rookie deal, and he's alluded to the type of money he feels like he deserves. At this point, it's been more of a media story than anything else, but it's still worth monitoring. Cook showed up for mandatory offseason activities throughout the summer.
On the field, expect Cook to continue his efficient play. He will play approximately half of the offensive snaps. A third consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season would mean wonders for Buffalo and Cook's wallet.
The Bills will rely on Davis and Johnson when called upon. Johnson has been a reliable and responsible third-down back, and there's no reason to believe that will change. Davis, for his part, will push for an expanded role, especially if Buffalo thinks Davis could take the reins in the backfield in the years beyond this season.

Bills Predicted to Cut Former First-Round Star in 53-Man Roster Projection
Bills Predicted to Cut Former First-Round Star in 53-Man Roster Projection originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shaq Thompson has pedigree here. And connections here. But maybe not a future here. Thompson, now 31, spent the first 10 years of his career with the Carolina Panthers. When that team released him back in February, not only was there uncertainty about the next steps of his career, but any new destination would be a major change for him. Advertisement Part of the issue? Thompson was coming off of two serious season-ending injuries in the last two seasons, allowing him to only play a total of six games in that time. However, some deep-rooted connections would point him toward his next move. ... To Buffalo. The Panthers drafted Thompson back in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, move orchestrated in some part with the help of Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott and Al Holcomb. Those three now hold roles with the Buffalo Bills. So it should not come too much as a surprise that the Bills finally claimed Thompson off the market this offseason, giving him another chance in the middle of their defense. Thompson called back to those connections in his initial conversations with reporters this week. Advertisement "Man . . . got released from Carolina—that's the first step," Thompson said. "But just stayed in connection with [Sean] McDermott, with [Brandon] Beane, with Al Holcomb. Just staying in connection with them, updating them just on surgeries and rehabs and where I'm at and stuff like that. I've been there with them in 2015, in Carolina. So kinda just always had that bond there." But ... It should also come as no surprise that as The Athletic projects the Bills' initial 53-man roster ... Thompson does not make the cut. Thompson's last full season of football in 2022 was arguably one of his most productive, totaling a career high 78 solo tackles that contributed to a tally of 135 tackles overall. Advertisement The Bills have a trusted core in place at linebacker already with Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard leading that charge. And based on the project, that will continue ... and so will Shaq's search for his next gig. ESPN Provides Empty 'Update' On Bills' James Cook Contract
ESPN Provides Empty 'Update' On Bills' James Cook Contract originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When it comes to James Cook and the Buffalo Bills, even no update is a big update. The team's No. 1 running back is locked in a contract dispute, and with training camp looming Bills fans are beyond nervous about one the best offensive weapons not being part of another attempted Super Bowl run. Advertisement Cook, who led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024, attended the Bills' recent minicamp. But more than a show of resolution to end his holdout, it was a decision made to avoid fines because "I love my money." ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler provided a non-update update this week that nonetheless piqued the interest of Bills Mafia. "I still think the door is open," Fowler said. "That's one I haven't checked on today, necessarily, but last I checked, there wasn't a lot of progress, but there was still like some optimism in the big picture that maybe they could figure something out, and they have four or five weeks to do it, whatever it is, before training camp, and then you still have camp. That doesn't have to be a deadline." So Fowler hasn't checked on the dispute "today." Last he heard there "wasn't a lot of progress." But there is "some optimism." Advertisement Nothing against Fowler, but that's some of the least newsy news of the offseason. Last season cook carried 207 times for 1,009 yards and 18 overall touchdowns. He also caught 32 passes. Obviously losing the 25-year-old star would be a major blow to the offense. It's a serious situation deserving of constant updates. This one, however, only bridges the gap between real news. Former Longhorn Tre Johnson reveals NBA jersey number
Former Longhorn basketball star Tre Johnson has checked another milestone off his bucket list. The Wizards newest star has picked his NBA jersey number. After wearing No. 21 as a Longhorn, Johnson has selected No. 12 to start his NBA career. During his time as a Longhorn, Johnson wore No.20 as a way to honor his father. That is the number he wore during his playing days. The number brought him a lot of luck as he quickly became one of the best players in the country. In his only collegiate season, Johnson averaged 19.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. As Johnson begins the next chapter of his college career, his number isn't the only change coming. The Texas native will also include "III" on the back of his jersey to acknowledge his full name: Richard Earl Johnson III. That is his new way to honor his father's legacy. When asked why No.12 is the number he is going with, Johnson gave a simple answer. He said, " I kinda just stared at the list and [saw] which one grew on me." Johnson is joining a Wizards team that is building a promising young core. Their roster features seven first-round picks who are 21 years old or younger. That includes Bub Carrington, Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, and AJ Johnson. If they can meet expectations, the Wizards future will be bright. The roster also includes veterans CJ McCollum, Khris Middleton, and Marcus Smart. They will be good voices for Johnson to rely on as he makes the transition to the NBA. With his jersey number figured out, the former Longhorn guard can focus on helping end the Wizards title drought. Fans won't have to wait long to see Johnson in action. The Wizard opens up their Summer League campaign in Las Vegas on July 11 against the Phoenix Suns. They are also scheduled to face the Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz.
