Ecclestone guides England to consolation win in final-ball thriller against India
England needed six runs off the final over, but Tammy Beaumont was bowled playing across the line to the first ball of Arundhati Reddy's 20th over, before Amy Jones fell to a spectacular flying catch by Radha Yadav at deep midwicket.
But with five runs needed from three balls, Sophie Ecclestone sprinted three after an Indian fumble in the deep, Paige Scholfield managed a single out into the off-side, and Ecclestone then made her ground for the necessary single off the final ball as the Indian shy at the stumps went wide.
The platform had been set after Danni Wyatt-Hodge celebrated becoming just the second woman (after Charlotte Edwards) to claim 300 caps for England by scoring 56 from 37 balls and sharing another century partnership at the top of the order with Sophia Dunkley.
But the narrow margin, and the 3-2 series loss, has revealed the scale of the task facing head coach Charlotte Edwards if she is to change her team's fortunes in time for the home World Cup next summer.
England's middle-order once again wobbled perilously in pursuit of their target, replicating the panic of the third T20, as what should have been an easy run-chase turned into a desperate one and was only successful thanks to some lethargic Indian fielding.
This time it was India who shelled crucial catches, putting Wyatt-Hodge down at short fine leg on 5. Then, after the opener miscued Deepti Sharma to midwicket in the 12th over, Shree Charani dropped a sitter at short third off Jones at a crunch point in the run chase, with 15 runs still needed.
Earlier, with Lauren Filer and Lauren Bell rested ahead of the ODIs, Warwickshire's Em Arlott and Issy Wong were tasked with opening the bowling on their home ground, but both took a hammering, conceding over 40 runs apiece as India reached 167 for seven after being put in to bat.

Wong suffered particularly at the hands of Shafali Verma, who smashed 20 of her 75 runs off one over by the seamer. For Verma, it was a welcome comeback: her first international half-century since being dropped by India last year, struck so imperiously that in a 66-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the latter contributed just 15 runs.
England were grateful to have Maia Bouchier back in the fold, despite the fact that she contributed just 16 runs at No 3: she has always been one of their best outfielders, and showed it here, clasping onto a brilliant running catch at wide long-on to see off Verma in the 13th over. She held onto another in the 19th which got rid of the aggressive Richa Ghosh.
But Bouchier's inclusion came at the expense of Alice Capsey, who now faces an uncertain path back to the England T20 side ahead of next summer's World Cup. England now have no official T20 internationals in the calendar until May of next year – a feat of scheduling which seems both bizarre and counterproductive, given the yawning gap between their current output and their desire to feature in a home final at Lord's next July.

Latest Lions call-ups 'a big carrot' for Scotland squad
Scotland's latest three British and Irish Lions call-ups should be "a big carrot" to the remaining squad as they face Samoa in the final game of their own summer tour on Friday, according to coach Pete Darcy Graham left Gregor Townsend's Scotland camp on Monday to join eight compatriots in the Lions squad. Prop Rory Sutherland and hooker Ewan Ashman will follow him after facing Samoa and could feature for the Lions in next Tuesday's match against a First Nations & Pasifika Ben White had been drafted in as injury cover a fortnight ago and scored one of the Lions' tries in Saturday's 48-0 win over an Invitational Australia-New Zealand select. Rather than dwell on Scotland's depleted resources, Horne suggested: "It was nice - it gave a bit of energy to our meeting this morning. Obviously, all the boys were delighted."Gregor made a really good point in the meeting. Look at what Ben did at the weekend there. He had a cracking game. He put himself right in the mix for potentially getting involved in some Test rugby."And there's no reason that our guys can't go over there and make a quick impression and, before you know it, you can play a critical part in the Lions series. So it's exciting for them."It's another little reminder to some of our boys as well. A lot can change in a week. A lot can change in a couple of days. So there's still a big carrot there for some of our fellows as well that are playing on Friday night."Indeed, Graham's Lions call came three days after being sent off in Scotland's 29-14 defeat by Fiji and he is now part of Andy Farrell's squad only after being cleared of suspension following a disciplinary recalled that "we were all gutted for Darcy" when the Edinburgh wing was deemed unfortunate to miss out on the initial squad."Everyone loves him," he said. "We all know what he can do and how he's a world-class player - and we were devastated he didn't make it."But he was really cool. I'm sure he'll be straight into training as soon as he lands and showing everyone just what he's all about. And he can end up having a big part to play."Scotland's loss in Fiji was a major setback to their hopes of rising the one place needed in the World Rugby rankings to secure a top-six seeding in December's World Cup draw."It's not something we've kind of focused on too much so far, to be honest," Horne said. "We were all gutted with the result and the manner of the defeat. There's also nothing worse than finishing a tour and finishing the season off the back of a defeat, so everyone will be desperate to right some wrongs and go well this weekend."It'll be cool playing at Eden Park. We've never won there before either, so I'm not sure if that's something that we'll maybe dip into later in the week."

Racing drivers prompt safety concerns on west Lancashire by-pass
Cars racing along a major road in Lancashire are prompting concerns from residents and local racing on the Rainford Road by-pass in Bickerstaff is happening mostly on Sunday nights during quieter hours, councillor Adrian Owens road, which straddles Lancashire and Merseyside, has a 60mph (96.5 km/h) limit and has been the scene of several serious accidents in the Constabulary has urged witnesses to report any sightings of speeding on the road. Owens said: "It's a relatively straight road, there are roundabouts so they have sections, they can time themselves, have races along those sections and that's what they've been doing."The councillor said residents had raised concerns about the issue and appealed for any drivers who want to race to do so safely at a dedicated track."Go to Oulton Park, go to one of the racetracks that we've got in the North West and do it safely and professionally on a proper racetrack," he Constabulary said: "We always take reports of speeding and anti-social driving seriously and will carry out speed checks and have patrols in areas where concerns are raised."
