Indian-origin man jailed for life for rape of child after U.K. police probe

The Hindua day ago
A 24-year-old Indian-origin man has been jailed for life following what Scotland Yard described as a 'significant' police investigation into an attempted rape and rape of a child in London.
Navroop Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years behind bars for five charges, including rape, at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday (July 4, 2025), the Metropolitan Police said.
He had previously pleaded guilty to three offences — possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, rape of a girl under 13 and assault of a girl under 13 by penetration.
He had been additionally convicted of the attempted rape of a woman in west London in October 2024 following a four-day trial at Isleworth Crown Court.
'I would like to commend the strength of the victim-survivors and their families and thank them for their unwavering bravery in reporting these awful incidents to us,' said Acting Chief Superintendent Sean Lynch, who leads policing in West Area for the Met Police.
'Today's conviction is a testament to the officers' thorough investigation, which has identified a violent sexual offender and undoubtedly prevented further harm,' he said.
The investigation was launched by his team, who tracked down Singh using forensics, CCTV and witness accounts to build a file of evidence against him.
'We are continuing to prioritise tackling violence against women and girls with our increased specialist teams. I hope that the community will find reassurance in our action to put this predator behind bars,' added Detective Lynch.
The police investigation was launched following reports of an attempted rape of a woman in her 20s on October 13 last year. Police were alerted by the victim, who, by chance, was met with two off-duty officers near the gates of Southall Park in Ealing, west London, and then accompanied her to the nearest police station.
Singh had been sitting on a bench in the park during the early hours of the same day, where he waited for a potential victim to walk past. He was carrying an imitation firearm, which he had ordered and assembled, and used to threaten the victim while he attempted to rape her, the Met Police said.
On the days following the report, officers trawled through hours of CCTV footage to try and identify an offender. While the investigation was ongoing, a child was raped at a different park on October 23, 2024, and officers are said to have 'immediately made a link between the offences'.
'Using the increased resources which were made available, officers secured additional forensic evidence. Officers were able to trace the offender to within a few doors of his home address where they delivered leaflets to appeal for witnesses and carried out increased patrols of the area,' the Met Police said.
Singh was arrested on October 27 last year, with each of the victims supported by specialist officers throughout the investigation and court process.
'The Met has made tackling VAWG (Violence against Women and Girls) a priority and are working to relentlessly pursue the city's most dangerous predators who often commit other crimes. We are placing hundreds more officers into bigger teams, rolling out specialist training, transforming our own culture and trying innovative methods, including counter-terrorism tactics, to track down offenders,' the Met Police added.

CID arrests COO of Falcon Group for ₹792 crore ponzi scheme

The Telangana Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Aaryan Singh, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a large-scale Ponzi scheme disguised as an invoice discounting platform. The scheme operating under the name of 'Falcon' has siphoned off at least ₹792 crore of 4,065 unsuspecting investors. Singh, aged 39, was arrested in Bathinda, Punjab on July 4 and brought to Hyderabad on a transit remand. He was produced before a magistrate on Saturday and has been remanded to judicial custody. He is the tenth person to be arrested in the ongoing investigation. The company allegedly used social media platforms like YouTube, Google and Instagram, as well as tele-calling operations, to lure depositors by offering high short-term returns through fake deals with reputed multinational corporations. According to CID officials, Singh, who resided in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, played a key role in the fraud. As COO, he not only issued receipts and agreements to depositors but was also actively involved in designing the scheme with the company's Managing Director, Amar Deep Kumar. Singh reportedly collected strategic deposits worth ₹14.35 crore from victims and diverted ₹1.62 crore into his personal account. The case was booked by the Economic Offences Wing, Cyberabad and later transferred to the CID for further investigation. Another eight FIRs have been filed against the company and its directors across the country. Following the initial complaints, Singh is believed to have fled to Nanded before moving to Bathinda, where he took shelter in a gurdwara. A CID team, acting on specific intelligence, tracked him down and seized two mobile phones and several incriminating documents during his arrest.

Why did al-Qaida linked terrorist group abduct Indians in Mali? Relative shares chilling account

The family of P Venkataraman , a resident of Odisha's Ganjam district and one of the three Indians kidnapped by an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group in Mali, has said that the abductors are demanding ransom. Speaking to ANI on Saturday, Venkataraman's brother-in-law said, 'Venkat last called me on June 30. He worked at a cement factory in Mali, West Africa. He said the company had restricted their movement because terrorists were nearby. This kidnapping happened on July 1.' Initially, the family was informed that Venkataraman was in police custody following a fire at the factory allegedly set by terrorists. However, they later learned that he had been abducted. 'We got a call from the company saying he and some others were in police custody because terrorists had set the factory on fire. But then international news reports claimed that al-Qaeda had kidnapped people. When we called the company to confirm, they asked us not to leak the information and said the terrorists were demanding ransom,' the brother-in-law said. He added, 'We waited for a few days and then approached the police. I also called and emailed the embassy but got no response. I demand that my brother-in-law be brought back home safely.' Live Events Confirming the incident, Sub-Collector Shibashish Baral told ANI, 'Information about the abduction was reported by the family, and the local administration immediately reached out to them. The government has been informed and is taking necessary steps.' The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed grave concern over the abduction of the three Indian workers from a factory in Mali's Kayes region. In a statement on Wednesday, the MEA urged Malian authorities to ensure their "safe and expeditious" rescue. 'It has come to the knowledge of the Government of India that many military and government installations at multiple locations in western and central Mali were attacked by terrorists on July 1,' the MEA said. The assault also targeted the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, where the Indian nationals were employed. Calling the act 'deplorable,' the MEA condemned the incident and reiterated India's strong opposition to violence against its citizens abroad. It said the Indian embassy in Bamako is in 'close and constant communication' with Malian authorities, law enforcement, and the management of the Diamond Cement Factory, as well as with the families of the abducted individuals. Bilawal Bhutto says ready to extradite Hafiz Saeed to India, draws his son's ire

Former Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has asserted that his country had no objection to extraditing terrorists like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar to India as a "confidence-building measure". However, Bilawal's remark did not go down well with Hafiz Saeed's son, Talha Saeed, who claimed that his comments brought disgrace to Pakistan an interview to Qatar-based Al Jazeera on Friday, Bilawal said Pakistan was ready to extradite "individuals of concern" to India provided New Delhi showed what he called "willingness" to cooperate in the process. He made the remarks while responding to a question about extraditing Hafiz Saeed, the chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as possible concessions and good-faith gestures to part of a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, where terrorism is one of the issues that we discuss, I am sure Pakistan would not be opposed to any of these things," Bilawal, the chairman of the Pakistan People's Party, said. Both LeT and JeM have been banned by Pakistan, according to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta). While Hafiz Saeed, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind, is currently serving a 33-year sentence for terror financing, Masood Azhar, a UN-designated global terrorist, has been proscribed by Azhar, one of India's most-wanted terrorists, has been linked to several major attacks in India, including the 2001 Parliament attack, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the 2016 Pathankot airbase assault, and the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing. He was released from Indian custody in 1999 as part of the Indian Airlines Flight 814 Kandahar hijacking hostage despite Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar being proscribed, such terrorists continue to roam freely within Pakistan and operate their outfits with impunity, and with the backing of the Pakistani military that note, Bilawal said that the cases prosecuted against these "individuals" were those related to Pakistan, such as terrorist financing. He asserted that prosecuting Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar for cross-border terrorism was difficult due to what he claimed was "noncompliance" from India."India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements that require that conviction to take place. It's important to present evidence within these courts, for people to come over from India to testify, to put up with whatever the counter-accusations will be," he claimed."If India is willing to be cooperative in that process, I am sure there will be no hurdle in extraditing any individual of concern," he to whine about India, Bilawal said that New Delhi's vow to pursue terrorists was a "new abnormal". "This does not serve the interests of Pakistan and it does not serve the interests of India," he on the whereabouts of Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar, Bilawal stated that the LeT chief was incarcerated, while Islamabad believes the JeM chief is in is factually not correct that Hafiz Saeed is a free man. He is in the custody of the Pakistani state," he claimed, while adding that Pakistan had been unable to arrest Masood Azhar."It is our belief that he is in Afghanistan. If and when the Indian government shares information that he is on Pakistani soil, we will be more than happy to arrest him," Bilawal SAEED HITS BACKResponding angrily to Bilawal's remark, Talha Saeed, the son of Hafiz Saeed, said the PPP leader shouldn't have given such a statement. He claimed that his remarks on extraditing Hafiz Saeed to India brought disgrace to Pakistan in the Saeed, who is also a designated global terrorist, said his family and others had vehemently opposed extraditing Hafiz Saeed to India.- Ends(with inputs from PTI)
