Toyota And Subaru Dragged To Court Because A Simple Component Keeps Failing
The Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra haven't been particularly popular EVs, and their popularity may be about to wane a little further, with a new lawsuit concerning faulty batteries being filed in the U.S. Eastern District Court of California. According to a report by Road & Track, the 12-volt battery that runs the accessories (not the drivetrain) of these EVs is claimed to repeatedly fail, with the plaintiff who filed the suit saying that his bZ4X has required numerous battery replacements in just 5,000 miles of driving.

Although this is a class-action lawsuit, concerning all bZ4X and Solterra EVs from the 2023-2025 model years, the court documents focus mainly on the plaintiff's claims, arguing that the Toyota and Subaru were both aware of 12V battery problems before the cars went on sale, and that they failed to warn customers or fix the problem.
"The 12-volt battery in Plaintiff Wade's vehicle has been replaced twice since March 2023," reads the filing on CarComplaints.com, with the owner saying that the first failure occurred just weeks into ownership and the second when it had roughly 2,000 miles on the clock. The third reportedly happened around 5,000 miles.
Another owner (this time with a Solterra) told the NHTSA that they had had the car since December 2024, and that they got the car new on a lease. "I have had the car since December 2024; the car was a new lease," said the complainant. "The battery has failed twice - once in January, and again last week. When I took it to the dealership, they said they replaced the battery, [but] the new battery is now doing the same thing." Other accounts have been posted on Reddit since early 2023, but the lawsuit does not claim to know what the core defect is, so determining Toyota and Subaru's culpability may be difficult. Hopefully, the updated and renamed Toyota bZ and its Solterra twin don't face the same troubles.

‘Toyota Tacoma. Chevy Tahoe:' Car Salesman Can Tell the Make And Model By the Sound Of The Hood Closing. Then He Demonstrates
You've probably seen auto-savants correctly guess a car's make and model by hearing its engine noise. But what about its hood? An auto salesman named Mike, who runs Mike's Car Store ( @mikescarstore ), demonstrated this unique ability in a viral Facebook Reel. His clip begins with him standing in front of the camera with a blindfold over his eyes. He's in front of a Toyota Tacoma with his left arm holding open the vehicle's hood. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . Next, he allows the hood to fall down onto the truck's engine bay, securing it shut with a loud clack. He guesses: 'Toyota Tacoma.' Following this, Mike stands before a Chevrolet. He drops the hood, culminating in a thunk that sounds a bit more muted than its predecessor. 'Chevy Tahoe,' Mike correctly surmises. Then his video positions Mike in front of a Jeep. 'Jeep Renegade,' he says after the hood closes. The final test in the clip isn't a vehicle, however. In the final segment, Mike holds up the plastic cover of a green dumpster for a second before dropping it. He then shares a running joke about the make and model. 'Tesla Cybertruck,' he quips, holding his finger up to the camera. Under the Hood Trending Now 'That's a First:' Police Officer Pulls Over Man. Then She Finds a Delta Airline Name Tag in It While many get excited over a vehicle's zero to 60 speed or the features its infotainment system packs, some components are overlooked. Perhaps they're considered more mundane, or they've been a fixture in vehicles so long that people take them for granted. Hood pistons, which are responsible for ensuring auto techs and drivers can easily service their vehicle's innards, are arguably in the latter category. Autotherside writes, 'Car hood pistons are essential…. They provide a smooth experience when accessing the engine bay.' The function of these pistons is to 'support the hood's weight and keep it securely open.' Autotherside notes that earlier vehicles weren't even designed with these parts. To work on your car, you needed to prop the hood open yourself. Long gone are the days of using a stick or board to prop the hood open while you check the spark plugs. Today, car hood pistons often feature gas-powered or hydraulic damper designs . Typically, the dampers either use fluid or hydraulic pressure to assist their opening and closing mechanisms. The type of damper used in a car hood piston can determine how quickly a hood cascades back down to the engine bay. Consequently, this can affect the type of noise a hood makes when it shuts on a vehicle. While Mike's video appears to be a lighthearted dig on the Cybertruck, becoming acquainted with different manufacturers' parts can make it possible. If you've listened to enough hoods closing, you may be able to ascertain the make and model by sound alone. The Most Loathed Vehicle In America? Several who replied to his video echoed Mike's sentiments about the Tesla Cybertruck . The Cybertruck has been the subject of much ridicule . One lumped it in with another vehicle Mike featured in his video. 'Cybertruck and Jeep Renegade are close to the same thing,' they wrote. Others likened the Cybertruck's design to a trash receptacle. 'I mean the Cybertruck looks like a dumpster,' the user wrote. 'Cybertruck is a trash can anyways so it fits,' someone else replied. Yet another said they aren't a fan of the vehicle's aesthetics, either, writing, 'A Cybertruck is a Pontiac Aztek on PS2 graphics.' A few people joked that the last entry in his video was a vehicle from another United States automaker. 'That Tesla sounded an awful lot like a Ford,' one person said. 'That was a Ford and you know it,' another remarked. Motor1 has reached out to Mike's Car Store via email for comment. We'll be sure to update this if he responds. Toyota Rumored To Be Working On Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Truck
Toyota Rumored To Be Working On Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Truck originally appeared on Autoblog. Hybrid pickups have become increasingly popular in recent years, with Ford and Toyota leading the way in the U.S. However, these have been conventional hybrids that can't be plugged in. It seems that plug-in hybrid systems - which add a lot more weight and complexity - are not yet considered a good fit for pickups. That could be set to change over at Toyota, with a report from Japanese magazine Best Car indicating that a PHEV version of the Hilux pickup could be sold when the new one arrives in March next year. While America has the Tacoma, the Hilux is Toyota's mid-size pickup in other markets, so could a Tacoma PHEV be on its way here too? Based on a Drive report, Best Car suggests that the plug-in hybrid Hilux will appear alongside the diesel variant in March next year. No technical details were shared, so it's unknown what this hybrid pickup's battery capacity or all-electric range could be. It would be a far cry from any other Hilux, as Toyota has so far only gone as far as installing a 48-volt mild hybrid system in the pickup. In America, Toyota's midsize Tacoma can be ordered with a non-plug-in hybrid powertrain known as the i-Force Max. Producing 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, it has a lot of power, but its efficiency of 23 mpg is good rather than remarkable, and merely matches that of certain non-hybrid Tacomas. According to an article from CNBC in May, Toyota plans to increase PHEV sales volumes in the USA from 2.4% last year to 20% by 2030, as the brand continues prioritizing hybrids over EVs in this market. 'We are going to grow our PHEV volume through the lineup over the next few years,' David Christ, head of the Toyota brand in North America, told CNBC at the time. 'We love the PHEV powertrain. We're working to increase, perpetually increase, the amount of miles you can drive on EV-only range.' While that statement doesn't guarantee there'll be a Tacoma PHEV, Christ didn't rule out any particular segment of body style, either. Toyota has experience with smaller PHEVs like the RAV4 and Prius, but the Tacoma is a much larger, heavier vehicle, so may require an all-new engine. Then again, the 2026 RAV4 PHEV makes 320 hp, so it's not lacking in power. If the rumors hold and the Hilux PHEV succeeds in markets like Australia, this could encourage Toyota to work on getting a Tacoma PHEV developed. Ford already sells a Ranger PHEV elsewhere, so this could make for a spicy tussle at some point in the future, should both automakers release such models here.
