'Uneducated': BJP's Sanjay Jaiswal slams Tejashwi Yadav's 'sootra' remark on SIR; demands apology

Time of Indiaa day ago
NEW DELHI: Bihar's voter list controversy is snowballing into a political slugfest, with BJP leader Sanjay Jaiswal on Sunday launching a fierce attack on RJD scion
for dismissing reports of illegal foreign nationals being found in the state's electoral rolls.

The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise by the
has become a flashpoint between the ruling and opposition camps in Bihar.
Reacting sharply to Tejashwi's comments, Jaiswal pulled no punches. Speaking to ANI, he said, "Only Tejashwi Yadav can make such comments about media personnel or any human being in general. The problem with Tejashwi Yadav is that he is not educated, which is why the people at his home make him memorise whatever they want, and he just repeats it.
But if someone asks him a question outside of that, he will create this kind of mess.
"
Calling the RJD leader "uneducated and irresponsible," Jaiswal demanded a public apology. "Tejashwi Yadav should publicly apologise, express regret, and take an oath that he will not say anything beyond what he is taught at home," he added.
The war of words escalated after Tejashwi rubbished reports suggesting that Bangladeshis, Nepalis, and even people from Myanmar had been detected as voters in Bihar during the Election Commission's house-to-house verification.
"Who are these sources?" Tejashwi asked. Mocking the credibility of the reports, he said, "These are the same sources that said Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore have been captured."
He further added,
"Ye sootra ko hum mootra samajhte hai."
Tejashwi also questioned the timing and intent of the revision. "SIR was conducted for the last time in 2003 under the UPA government. Since then, we have seen many elections, including the ones in 2014, 2019, and 2024.

In those elections, we lost by three to four lakhs. Does that mean all these foreigners voted for PM Modi?... This means that the NDA are at fault for any dubious elements' names getting added to the voter lists.
"
He went on to claim that the process was politically motivated. "That means all the elections they have won have been a fraud... SIR is a complete eyewash. The EC is working as a cell of a political party."
Earlier, news agency PTI quoted Election Commission officials as saying that field-level teams had identified 'a large number' of suspected foreign nationals, mainly from Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, during the verification drive.
As Bihar heads toward assembly elections later this year, the Election Commission's SIR effort to clean up the electoral rolls has taken center stage, and may set the tone for a nationwide scrutiny of voter lists, particularly with a focus on verifying individuals' place of birth.

EC working in favour of BJP in Bihar: CPM

Vijayawada: CPM Politburo Member BV Raghavulu alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is acting in favour of the BJP by initiating a covert citizenship identification process in the name of voter registration in Bihar. He stated that even while the matter is under consideration by the Supreme Court, the EC has written to other states recommending the implementation of similar processes which are implemented in Bihar. The CPM national leader has demanded for an immediate halt to such actions. Addressing the media at the Balotsavam Bhavan here on Monday, Raghavulu questioned how the EC could announce thatits Special Investigation Report (SIR) in Bihar identified people from Nepal, Bangladesh, and a citizenship identification initiative under the guise of voter registration is inappropriate, said the CPM leader. The Supreme Court had advised using Aadhaar, ration cards, and previous voter rolls to identify voters but the EC is disregarding these guidelines. He warned that by pushing for a Bihar-style SIR in all states even before the Supreme Court's next hearing on July 28, the EC is compromising its neutrality and aligning itself with BJP interests. Other official institutions exist for citizenship matters, and the EC's interference in this domain is unconstitutional, said Raghavulu. Such haste, without reviewing Bihar's experience or awaiting a court ruling, could destroy public trust in constitutional systems, said the CPM leader. The CPM state secretary V Srinivasa Rao stated that farmers in Karidedu are resisting land acquisition for the IndoSol project, cutting across party lines. He alleged that a TDP MLA is trying to divide this resistance and warned the government that forcibly acquiring land without public consent will face backlash. He criticised the government for acquiring land in agency areas for pumped storage power projects without consulting local Gram Sabhas. Over 1.6 lakh acres have already been acquired in the name of development. Many of these remain unused—such as 6,000 acres in Krishnapatnam, 2,500 acres in Prakasam for NIMZ, and 20,000 acres in Donakonda. In Kakinada SEZ, 10,000 acres lie vacant. He questioned whether the real intent is development or mere land grabbing.

Bittu Bajrangi placed under house arrest ahead of Nuh yatra

Self-styled cow vigilante Raj Kumar, alias Bittu Bajrangi—one of the prime accused in last year's communal violence during the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh—was placed under house arrest in Faridabad till Monday night to prevent his participation in this year's procession. Two armed personnel were deployed outside his residence after police denied him permission to attend the yatra. Raj Kumar, alias Bittu Bajrangi. Bajrangi had approached the Punjab and Haryana high court last week seeking urgent permission to join the yatra, but no hearing date was assigned. He then submitted an undertaking to Nuh and Faridabad police stating he would refrain from making provocative statements or posting controversial content online. Despite this, his request was rejected. The precautionary step came amid heightened security across Nuh after a shrine (mazar) was allegedly vandalised in Sainipura, Tauru, late Sunday night. Authorities suspect the act was intended to disrupt peace ahead of the procession. More than 2,500 police personnel were deployed across the district, with drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring set up at key locations—particularly around Nalhar temple, where suspects had opened fire from hilltops during the 2023 violence. Mobile internet and bulk SMS services were suspended for 24 hours, and the sale of meat was prohibited along the yatra route from Nalhar Mahadev Temple to Jhirkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Ferozepur Jhirka and the Singar Temple in Singar village. Nuh deputy commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena said police responded swiftly to Sunday's incident and held meetings with community stakeholders to maintain calm. 'The situation is completely peaceful. Senior officials were stationed on the ground to ensure law and order,' he said. Meena added that the yatra was held without incident, with devotees offering prayers at multiple temples throughout the district. 'This time, we also stationed police personnel on the hills around Nalhar temple for additional surveillance,' he said. Haryana sports minister Gaurav Gautam, CM Nayab Singh Saini's media advisor Mukesh CL Vashisth, BJP leaders, All India Peace Committee chairman Haji Jaan Mohammad and others welcomed devotees during the procession. Bajrangi, along with another cow vigilante Monu Manesar and Congress MLA Mamman Khan, is among the key accused in the July 31, 2023, communal violence that began in Nuh and spread to Gurugram. The clashes left six people dead, including a home guard, and injured more than 70. Bajrangi has since been barred from entering Nuh without prior permission. Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav confirmed that Bajrangi was taken to Saran police station on Sunday evening and gave a written assurance that he would not engage in any activity that could incite tension. Bajrangi later said he had requested to be confined to his home rather than the police station, after which the personnel were posted outside his residence

BJP has ruined UP's education system: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging that its school merger policy is a conspiracy to deprive the children of poor families of education. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. (HT file) 'The government's decision to close more than 10,000 primary schools is going to destroy the future of children. BJP spends billions of rupees on its publicity but the government does not have money for schools,' the SP chief alleged in a statement. He also alleged that the UP government has ruined the education system in the state. 'Closing schools is a part of BJP's conspiracy. Children of poor families study in council primary schools. The BJP government wants to deprive the poor of education by closing schools. Education, jobs, employment have never been on its agenda. Closing thousands of schools in the state will have a direct impact on the education of girls. How will the girls of poor families in villages go to school far away from their homes,' Yadav alleged. 'The BJP is ruining the future of the state. It is pushing the state backward in every field, including education. BJP wants the poor, backward, Dalits to stay away from education. If they become educated, they will oppose its wrong policies and ask questions. So, it wants to keep them uneducated,' he further alleged. Earlier on Monday morning, Samajwadi Party workers led by SP leader Jaysingh Pratap Yadav from Amethi and others staged a protest against the government's school merger move at Hazratganj crossing.
