Robbie Pardlo dead: Grammy-award nominated singer dies aged 46 as friends pay tribute
The lead vocalist of early noughties R&B trio City High, has tragically passed away at the age of 46.
Robbie Pardlo died on Thursday, July 17, surrounded by his loved ones at his residence in Willingboro, New Jersey, as reported by TMZ. The cause of death has yet to be disclosed.
Pardlo shot to fame alongside Claudette Ortiz and Ryan Toby as part of City High, renowned for their 2001 chart-topping single What Would You Do? Produced by Wyclef Jean, the track became a rallying cry for struggling single parents and soared into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
City High's meteoric rise to success earned them a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. The band called it quits in 2003, but their music continued to resonate.
Plans for a memorial and tribute to Pardlo are currently being arranged by his family, with further details expected to be released shortly.
From 1999 to 2003, Pardlo was a key member of City High, performing alongside Claudette Ortiz and Ryan Toby. Their breakout hit, What Would You Do?, released in 2001 and produced by Wyclef Jean, became a nationwide anthem highlighting poverty and the struggles faced by single parents.
City High initially formed when Pardlo signed as a solo artist, but later brought on board his schoolmate Toby. In an effort to distinguish themselves from other male duos, they included Ortiz, another classmate, forming the trio that fans grew to love, reports the Mirror US.
In May 2001, City High released their only full-length album, City High, which reached No. 34 on the Billboard 200 and received high praise from music critics. The group also notched up another chart success with Caramel, a team-up with rapper Eve, which climbed into the Billboard Hot 100's top 20.
Despite the band's meteoric ascent, City High split in 2003, leaving behind a short-lived but enduring impact on the early 2000s R&B landscape. Pardlo's vocals and the trio's narrative style struck a chord with fans well beyond their dissolution.
Supporters flocked to X, previously Twitter, to honour the deceased rapper. One admirer posted, "It's with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Robbie Pardlo, singer and former member of the R&B trio City High. "Try to work in a industry that has really safe odds of longevity in life kids. RIP," another commented.
A third contributed, "City High and LFO was my first concert. I got to run into City High after the show and talk to them for a few. Gonna hit play on Caramel in honor. "Aww man RIP Robbie Pardlo of Hip Hop group City High. This group was a breath of fresh air hearing growing up and their content was high quality," someone else posted.

Phil Collins' reason for hospitalization is revealed after viral rumors say he was in hospice
Phil Collins is not in hospice, despite rumors swirling the internet. The 74-year-old retired Genesis drummer and singer is in the hospital for knee surgery, a rep for the musician told TMZ. The outlet wrote, further citing the rep, that Collins is 'nowhere near death'. Concerned fans took to social media earlier this week to express fear over the worst case scenario. The former entertainer put away stopped playing drums in 2022 due to physical limitations, and in February said he no longer wants to make music. 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens,' the Grammy winner told MOJO magazine, adding, 'But I'm not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick...' The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, suffers from type 2 diabetes and complications from a spine injury he incurred nearly 20 years ago. 'My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing,' he told Daily Mail in 2009. 'I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful. I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through,' he said at the time, adding cheekily, 'Don't worry, I can still sing.' The MOJO interview was part of a larger story that served as a retrospective for all the eras of Genesis. The actor, who is the father of Emily in Paris star Lily Collins, got his start in show business as the Artful Dodger in Oliver on London's West End in 1964. During that time, the young actor, who had been drumming since the age of five, got to know the orchestra leader and the drummer, which inspired him to become a professional percussionist, according to Drumeo. Collins auditioned for Genesis and joined the group in 1970 at age 19, replacing John Mayhew on drums. He became the frontman for the group when Peter Gabriel left to pursue a solo career in August 1975. The group released eight albums together, collecting numerous awards before Collins exited to pursue a solo career in 1996. During that time he won eight Grammy awards, six Brit Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three American Music Awards, two Golden Globes and an Oscar. Phil's health update comes days after he paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne following his death on Tuesday at age 76. He shared a throwback photo of the two music artists embracing with smiles on their faces. The caption simply read, 'In happier times, love always PC x.'

Phil Collins, 74, admitted to hospital after clearing up 'hospice' rumours
Earlier this year, Phil Collins revealed he has been 'very sick' but despite rumours, he has clarified he's not in a hospice – but is in hospital. Last week was a brutal one for music fans as we lost the iconic Ozzy Osbourne and jazz legend Chuck Mangione, as well as wrestler Hulk Hogan. Social media was rife with speculation about Phil's health, with a rumour that he was in a hospice (usually reserved for the terminally ill) spreading quickly among fans. Concerns for the 74-year-old musician have been growing since he officially retired in 2022 after Genesis' farewell show. Phil's spokesperson has attempted to calm any worry surrounding the Genesis drummer's health, assuring TMZ he is 'nowhere near death'. Instead, the You'll Be In My Heart legend is in hospital for a knee operation — not in hospice care at all. The spokesperson did not specify any details about the knee operation but this is not the first surgery Phil has undergone. In 2007, the In The Air Tonight hitmaker suffered a spinal injury, resulting in his continuous struggle with severe nerve damage and deteriorating mobility. He had dislocated vertebrae in his neck while on tour with Genesis but after two surgeries — in 2009 and 2015 — Phil was reliant on a cane. The injury also resulted in numbness in his hands, meaning that by 2019, he was unable to hold drumsticks and had to retire. On top of this, in 2021, the Hall of Famer revealed he also had diabetes so his health was suffering as a result of that too. Speaking to Mojo magazine in their April issue, he shared: 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'But I'm not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick.' While Phil might not be desperate to record new music, he did sit down at a drum set for the first time in 15 years with the help of his son, Nic Collins. He was honoured in a documentary, Drummer First, which explored the Against All Odds hitmaker's life and legacy as a drummer. In the documentary trailer, he commented: 'It's still kind of sinking in a bit… I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. 'If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. 'I just feel like I've used up my air miles. It just feels so strange to hold a pair.' More Trending Phil was last publicly seen in May when he supported his son, Mathew, 20, at a football match. He plays for WSG Tirol II, which is the youth academy team of Austrian club WSG Tirol. Mathew posed with dad in the stands of the club's stadium, with the younger Collins family member still dressed in his green kit while Phil opted for a snuggly fleece. The caption read, 'Two big wins today!', hinting that his dad's attendance meant a lot in the face of the drummer's deteriorating health. Metro has reached out to Phil Collins' reps for comment. Hulk Hogan's close friend reveals heartbreaking regret over decision he took days before WWE icon's death
The death of wrestling icon Hulk Hogan has shaken the world of sports entertainment - including many who were friends with the WWE legend. Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake - a WWE Hall of Famer and one of Hogan's longest friends in the wrestling business - got emotional when reflecting upon the life of the man that helped him get into the industry. Speaking to TMZ, Brutus - born Ed Leslie - reflected on the man he knew and revealed how important he was to him. 'Well, he meant everything,' he told the outlet. 'He recruited me basically out of high school to go into the wrestling business when all his other friends refused and didn't want anything to do with it.' Brutus went into more detail about how Hogan - born Terry Bollea - recruited him into the business. 'Here's the thing. When he said to me, "You're going to be a wrestler, kid", I was like, "Holy cow,"' Brutus revealed. 'I used to go watch wrestling when I was a kid, but nothing I ever thought about getting involved with. And he and I became so close: starting together, coming through the trenches and training... 'There's so much that nobody knows about, really, our beginnings, our past. I owe him everything, and I'm grateful to have known him, to have been there many times for him as he was for me.' The emotions really got to Brutus when discussing a harrowing accident - and how Hogan got right to his side. 'He had a heart so big. Thirty-five years ago, July 4, 1990, I was in a horrible accident and not expected to live. 'And he left his family in California. His wife about to have a baby, his son, Nick, to fly to Florida to be there because the doctor said they didn't think I was going to make it. 'And he flew there to be there for me. And when they brought me out of a drug-induced coma, and he said to me, "Don't even think about it, Brutus, you're going to live." And I did. And he was there for me at the moment I needed the most.' Brutus even revealed that he intended to see Hogan in recent days, but passed. 'I was going to try to go to his house a couple of days ago. My wife said, "You just go over there." I was thinking, "Oh, my God." But if I go to the house and they say, "No, you can't come in, it would have crushed me." I didn't [go]. And now I wish maybe that I had tried to get in and tried to get to see him before he passed.' Lastly, Brutus revealed what he would say to Hogan if he had the chance: 'I love you brother, and we truly are friends to the end. 'I don't even know what else to say about that. I know his family and mine were close for many years, and I wish the best for them. I know they're having a horrible, difficult time. 'And I just wanted to say to them, keep your chins up. He would have wanted us to fight on and move forward. That's hopefully what we're all going to do.'
