Macron decorates Indonesia leader, announces cultural partnership
MAGELANG, Indonesia: French President Emmanuel Macron bestowed Indonesia's leader with France's top award on Thursday (May 29), before announcing a new cultural partnership with Jakarta on a visit to the world's largest Buddhist temple.
Macron's trip to Indonesia is the second stop of a three-nation, six-day tour of Southeast Asia that began with Vietnam and concludes in Singapore.
After meeting for talks in the capital Jakarta, Macron and his counterpart Prabowo Subianto flew by helicopter on Thursday from Javan city Yogyakarta to a military academy in Magelang, a city in Central Java surrounded by mountains.
The pair attended a military parade and Macron gave Prabowo the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France's highest military or civil award.
Prabowo is an ex-general accused of rights abuses under dictator Suharto's rule in the late 1990s. He was discharged from the military over his role in the abductions of democracy activists but denied the allegations and was never charged.
Macron rode in a jeep driven by Prabowo with the pair welcomed by a marching band and hundreds of students waving Indonesian flags.
Macron then visited Borobudur, a Buddhist temple built in the 9th century that is the world's largest, where the pair announced they were boosting cultural ties.
"In front of this temple, we are taking an important step by launching a new cultural partnership," said Macron.
"The first pillar is heritage and museum cooperation. The second pillar is cultural and creative industries," he said.
Macron said the basis of the new partnership would be cinema and fashion, as well as video games, design and gastronomy.
The French leader will now depart for Singapore where he will deliver the opening address Friday at the Shangri-la Dialogue, Asia's premier security forum.
On Wednesday, the pair called for progress on "mutual recognition" between Israel and the Palestinians at a key meeting next month as Macron brought the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation into his diplomatic efforts.
"Indonesia has stated that once Israel recognises Palestine, Indonesia is ready to recognise Israel and open the diplomatic relationship," said Prabowo.
Indonesia has no formal ties with Israel and support for the Palestinian cause among Indonesians runs high.
The nations also signed a series of agreements on cooperation in a range of fields including defence, trade, agriculture, disaster management, culture and transport.

Indonesia begins $7.5b EV battery project despite environment fears

PHOTO: AFP JAKARTA - Indonesia broke ground on June 29 on a US$5.9 billion (S$7.5 billion) megaproject for EV battery production backed by Chinese giant CATL, despite NGOs raising concerns over a lack of environmental guarantees. Indonesia is the world's largest nickel producer and it is trying to capitalise on its vast reserves, with a 2020 export ban spurring a domestic industrial boom of the key metal used in EV batteries and stainless steel. The EV battery project will include a US$4.7 billion investment on the eastern island of Halmahera and a US$1.2 billion investment in West Java, energy minister Bahlil Lahadalia said in a speech alongside President Prabowo Subianto. 'According to my calculation, it won't take long, in probably between five to six years we will be able to reach energy self-sufficiency,' Mr Prabowo said at a groundbreaking ceremony in Karawang, West Java. Mr Bahlil said the Halmahera complex will focus on mining, smelting and production of cathodes which are a key component in rechargeable batteries. The West Java complex will focus on battery cell production, the minister said. The two politicians did not say when the megaproject was slated to be operational, but Indonesian officials have said a CATL plant in Halmahera would open in March 2026. Alongside CATL, the Halmahera complex is backed by China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Indonesia's state-owned Antam. Climate Rights International (CRI) and Greenpeace Indonesia this week issued a call for greater assurances from Jakarta that measures were in place to protect the surrounding environment at the bigger complex in eastern Halmahera. Environmental group Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam) said in a statement on June 28 that Jakarta was 'chasing vague economic growth while consciously ignoring the people's scream' to end damage to the environment and residents' livelihoods. Halmahera, a once-pristine island in the Maluku archipelago, has seen environmental damage increase as operations have grown at a large industrial park that hosts the world's largest nickel mine. A CRI report in June warned the Indonesian government was allowing environmental damage to go unchecked around the Weda Bay mine and the industrial park that hosts it. An AFP report in May detailed how the home of the nomadic Hongana Manyawa tribe was being eaten away by mining operations there. Indonesia-China lithium battery plant to be operational by end-2026
JAKARTA: A lithium-ion battery plant by an Indonesian company and China's CATL is expected to be in operation by the end of 2026 with an initial capacity of 6.9 gigawatt hours, an Indonesian official said on Sunday (Jun 29). The plant is expected to expand to produce electric vehicle batteries with a storage capacity of up to 15 GWh, said energy ministry spokeswoman Dwi Anggia, adding the output will be sold to domestic and overseas markets. The venture by Indonesia Battery and Chinese giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is part of a US$6 billion power battery project signed in 2022 by Indonesian companies, including state-miner PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, and a CATL consortium. The partnership spans nickel mining and processing, EV battery manufacturing and battery recycling. Indonesian Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, speaking at the project's groundbreaking, said the plant might also produce a type of battery to store energy from solar panels. "With the battery for solar panels, the total production capacity of this plant could reach up to 40 GWh," he said, adding that discussion with the project owner was continuing. The battery plant will be built in West Java, while the remaining subprojects will be in eastern Indonesia's nickel-rich province of North Maluku. The government of Indonesia, home to the world's largest nickel reserves, has set an ambitious target of producing about 600,000 EVs by 2030. That would be about 13 times the number sold in Indonesia last year.
