13 OFWs from Israel safely return to the Philippines

Filipino Times2 days ago
Thirteen overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), composed of caregivers and a hotel worker, safely returned to the Philippines from Israel on July 4, 2025. They arrived at NAIA Terminal 1 in Pasay City, part of the government's ongoing repatriation program for distressed OFWs in the Middle East.
Following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the returning workers are receiving reintegration support that includes livelihood aid, health and welfare assistance, and TESDA training vouchers to help them start anew in the country.
The OFWs were welcomed by a team representing several government agencies, led by DMW Undersecretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay and Assistant Secretary Maria Angela Galias. They were joined by officials from OWWA, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the MIAA Medical Team.
Undersecretary Tutay acknowledged the challenges these workers endured in the conflict-affected areas of Israel and emphasized the government's commitment to providing full support during their reintegration.
Upon arrival, the OFWs underwent health checks and were given financial assistance through various government funds and programs including DMW's AKSYON Fund, OWWA's Emergency Repatriation Fund, and DSWD aid.
One of the repatriates, 51-year-old caregiver Josephine Sanglitan Sandoi from Davao City, recounted her traumatic experience of surviving a missile strike that injured some of her colleagues.
This group is part of Batch 38-B, bringing the total number of recently repatriated OFWs from Israel to 21 under the DMW-led voluntary repatriation initiative.
'Your safety is our President's top concern. Welcome back, dear Kababayan!' said Undersecretary Tutay.

Marcos open to taxing online gaming, supports measures against gambling addiction

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is open to a Department of Finance (DOF) proposal to impose taxes on the online gaming industry, as part of efforts to regulate the sector and combat gambling addiction, Malacañang said Monday. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said the move aims to protect Filipino families by restricting access to harmful online gambling platforms. 'The President understands the dangers of gambling addiction. He will not oppose any taxation plan, as long as it's backed by solid research,' Castro said. She added that imposing taxes would go hand-in-hand with intensifying efforts against illegal or unregistered online gaming sites. The DOF's proposal also includes limiting playtime, setting cash-in ceilings, displaying responsible gambling warnings, and even banning public officials from playing online gambling games. Malacañang emphasized that all possible legislative and policy solutions to curb online gambling addiction are welcome under the Marcos administration.

Philippine government to expand affordable rice program amid farmers concerns

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assured the public that the government's PHP20 per kilo rice program will continue and expand to more public markets. In his weekly video vlog posted on Sunday, the President said the affordable rice program reflects the administration's efforts to reduce food prices while supporting Filipino farmers. 'P20 rice is here to stay. It is achievable, it is sustainable. Kaya abangan ninyo sa inyong mga palengke,' Marcos said. The Benteng Bigas Meron Na! (BBM) initiative is currently available through Kadiwa ng Pangulo outlets and can be purchased by senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, minimum wage earners, and low-income families. The government aims to reach one million beneficiaries by the end of the year. Marcos also called on newly elected and appointed local government officials, who assumed office on June 30, to work closely with national agencies to improve the delivery of public services. 'Tapos na po ang bahagi ng politika, serbisyo publiko na ang haharapin ninyo ngayon,' he added. Amid concerns that the PHP20 rice may negatively impact local farmers, Marcos said the National Food Authority (NFA) will continue to purchase palay at stable support prices: PHP18 per kilo for wet palay and PHP19 to PHP23 per kilo for dry palay. He also noted that the government is expanding the construction of rice processing facilities and dryers nationwide to help farmers store and process their harvests.

25 OFWs from Israel safely return home through government repatriation program

Twenty-five Filipino caregivers who had been working in Israel are now back home safely, thanks to the government's voluntary repatriation program. They arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City on July 6, where they were warmly welcomed by a government team led by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. directed the repatriation efforts, expressing deep concern for the welfare of the overseas workers. Secretary Cacdac assured the returnees of the President's support and urged them to use the financial aid wisely. The repatriated OFWs received assistance from various agencies: financial aid through the DMW's AKSYON Fund and OWWA's Emergency Repatriation Fund, additional cash support from the DSWD, and TESDA training vouchers to help them develop new skills. They also underwent medical checkups provided by the Department of Health and the MIAA Medical Team. OFW Nelizza Baldrias from Calaca, Batangas expressed gratitude, saying the financial help will be used to start a small business. She and the others form the 39th batch of OFWs repatriated from Israel since the conflict began in October 2023. In total, 1,405 Filipinos have returned home under the Marcos administration's repatriation program.
