BMC permits free parking at 24 locations in A ward
Instead, the civic body will allow free parking in at least 10 of the 24 locations in the ward once existing parking contracts expire. The move is aimed at restoring public trust and curbing the rampant practice of parking operators charging exorbitant fees or collecting money without authorisation.
Among the areas where parking has been made free are Jamnalal Bajaj lane, where the contract expired on May 24, and the area around Eros Cinema, where the contract will expire on May 31. No charges will be payable for parking at eight other locations in the island city once contracts expire on May 31, said an official from the A ward.
'We are initiating spot quotations to appoint new contractors for all 24 locations. Till the tender process is completed, parking at these locations will remain free of cost,' said the A ward official.
The A ward, a heritage and tourism hotspot, sees high vehicular traffic due to the presence of many government offices, commercial hubs, and cultural sites.
Sources in the civic body said the free parking provision would be a temporary measure while the BMC revisits the pay-and-park policy framework and introduces stricter transparency and accountability measures. The civic body will deploy its own staff at all 24 locations to oversee parking operations and assist motorists, the sources said.
The BMC is also taking strict disciplinary action against those involved in the parking racket. The parking contractor at Kala Ghoda – who was found overcharging motorists and allowing parking in no parking zones during a BMC-led sting operation – has been booked under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. A proposal has also been sent to the traffic department to blacklist the contractor.
A hearing will be conducted soon to determine the tenure of blacklisting – spanning three to five years – depending on the tender conditions, said sources.
Former BJP corporator from Colaba, Makarand Narwekar, had last week demanded that all illegal pay-and-park contracts be cancelled and parking be made free until the fresh tendering process was completed.
The workings of the parking mafia came to light on April 25, when activist Santosh Daundkar raised the matter, detailing how parking contractors, some with alleged criminal backgrounds, operated a coordinated racket spanning A ward to T ward.
The BMC is also cracking down on officials with alleged connections to the parking mafia. On April 17, assistant engineer Pawan Kawre from A ward was suspended pending a preliminary inquiry into his alleged role in mismanaging parking contracts under his jurisdiction.

Thane court convicts three in 2017 theft case, acquits them of MCOCA charges
Last Updated: Thane, Jul 22 (PTI) A special court in Thane district convicted three persons in a 2017 theft case while acquitting them of charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Special Judge (MCOCA) V. G. Mohite sentenced Rahul Machhindra Shinde (44) and Datta Umrao Shinde (35) to five years of rigorous imprisonment after finding them guilty of charges under section 380 (theft in a dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The other accused, Amit alias Pravin Premchand Bagrecha (44), was convicted under section 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the IPC, and sentenced to 25 days of rigorous imprisonment. A copy of the order dated July 18 was made available on Tuesday. The court acquitted the three accused of charges under the MCOCA. Rahul and Datta Shinde were also acquitted of charges under Sections 395 (dacoity) and 397 (dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the IPC. Judge Mohite observed that the prosecution failed to prove the mandatory requirement of 'use of violence or threat of violence or intimidation or coercion" essential for an offence to qualify as 'organised crime" under Section 2(1)(e) of the MCOCA. According to the prosecution, on March 3, 2017, a police team were on night patrolling duty when they received a call about thieves in the Chandresh Park area in Dombivli town. Police chased five men, apprehending Datta Shinde, who was found with a stolen TV and a weapon. The remaining four managed to escape. The police later apprehended the other two accused and recovered the stolen golden ornaments. While the accused were initially charged with dacoity and dacoity with attempt to cause grievous hurt, the court found that the ingredients for these offences were not met. The judge observed, 'None of the accused voluntarily caused or attempted to cause hurt or wrongful restraint or fear of instant death or instant hurt to anybody while committing said theft in the house." 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case: Maharashtra moves SC challenging Bombay HC's acquittals of 12 convicts
NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra government on Tuesday knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court by filing an appeal challenging Monday's Bombay High Court verdict acquitting all 12 convicts in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta mentioned the matter before a bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai, seeking urgent listing and hearing of the appeal. After hearing Mehta's submission, the CJI-led bench agreed to list the matter for hearing on Thursday. During the brief hearing, Mehta told the top court that the Special Leave Petition (SLP) was ready. 'Please list it tomorrow... There is urgency,' the SG pleaded. CJI Gavai responded by stating that he had read in the papers that eight accused had already been released from prison following the High Court's Monday, the Bombay High Court acquitted all 12 accused in the 2006 train blasts case as it set aside the Special MCOCA Court's 2015 order that had handed the death sentence to five and life imprisonment to seven others, saying it was 'hard to believe' they committed the crime.

Pratyusha Banerjee Had Not Left Balika Vadhu On A Good Note: 'There Were Differences'
Last Updated: Pratyusha Banerjee was found dead on April 1, 2016. Since then, her former boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh has been making several allegations. Pratyusha Banerjee rose to fame after she played the role of Anandi in the popular show Balika Vadhu. However, she left the show in March 2013. The actress then passed away in 2016, allegedly by suicide and ever since, her former boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh has made several allegations. Now, Singh has claimed Pratyusha had not left Balika Vadhu on a good note. In a recent interview, the late actress' ex-boyfriend argued that Pratyusha quit Balika Vadhu due to 'creative differences" with the makers. Not just this, he also accused the makers of the popular show of non-payment. 'She hadn't left Balika Vadhu on a good note either. So obviously, production houses won't call you back. She told me there were creative differences with the team, too much interference from her side, they said. And then there was a payment issue with DJs. Her payment had been stuck for six months, so maybe that led to more problems. These things happen in production. Plus, her expenses were so high, her father's and mother's too, that she could never really stop working. Like we discussed earlier, they had loans to repay, so she had to keep earning. But when payments didn't come on time, she would get frustrated, and relationships in the industry would spoil. She'd call again and again, asking for her money," Singh told Bollywood Bubble. Pratyusha Banerjee died on April 1, 2016, allegedly by suicide. Following her death, her parents filed a complaint against Rahul Singh. He was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt). In 2023, a sessions court in Mumbai rejected Singh's discharge plea. In the plea, he claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case on account of 'personal vendetta". However, the court mentioned that prima facie it was clear that 'physical, emotional and financial harassment and exploitation" by Rahul landed the Balika Vadhu actress in depression.
