New Alpine A290 hot hatch goes extreme
Like the A110 Rally unveiled in 2019, the all-electric Alpine A290 Rallye is a genuine racing car, which Alpine says is a 'gateway to electric competition and designed in line with the latest rally regulations'. The new car has been developed by Alpine's hi-tech engineering facility in Viry-Châtillon, France, and will hit the start line at a 'single-rally challenge' before the end of the year.
The regular Alpine A290 hot hatch features some major changes over the Renault 5 on which it's based, and the Rallye includes further key motorsport upgrades. For starters, there's a full roll cage, bucket seats from Sabelt, a quick-release bonnet and a roof-mounted air intake. Advertisement - Article continues below
The Rallye comes with the same 52kWh battery as the regular A290 road car, though, while the 217bhp, 300Nm front-mounted electric motor has also been retained. As a result, assuming the Rallye has a stripped-out interior, it should beat the road car's 6.4-second 0-62mph time.
The A290's bespoke ZF limited-slip differential is kept, too, but the single-speed gearbox and electronic management system in the Rallye are revised, though. The Rallye gets a tweaked suspension set-up too, with ALP Racing shocks to go with the A290's bespoke subframe and multi-link rear. The Rallye also has six-piston brake calipers up front with huge 350mm discs, plus 18-inch rally wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.
While the standard Alpine A290 GTS costs from £37,500, pricing for the Alpine A290 Rallye starts at 59,990 Euros (roughly £52,000) excluding VAT. While Alpine says the Rallye is designed for one-make rallying, we can't help but think how a head-to-head event with the Vauxhall Corsa Electric Rally would go.

Any day Ferrari introduces a new grand tourer is a good day This is the new Ferrari Amalfi, a GT that replaces the stunning Roma. The Amalfi's first job, then, is to look the part – like most Ferraris, its seductive lines do not disappoint. A powerful twin-turbocharged V8 and a sporty dual-cockpit layout inside are other appealing ingredients that form part of the new coupe. Let's take a closer look at the new Amalfi. 0:03 / 0:09 The Ford Mach 4 could be the brand's first sedan since 2020 Watch More 1 Minimalist lines, a wedge theme, and geometric volumes are the leading traits of the Ferrari Amalfi's exterior design. The resemblance to the Roma is obvious, but the Amalfi has a cleaner front fascia than the Roma as it does away with a conventional grille area. 2 The dark, recessed band that runs below the hood cleverly conceals the car's lights and sensors. 3 Flush-fitting door handles and 20-inch wheels define the side view, which is also devoid of superfluous creases and bulges. If you prefer your supercars to be less beautiful but more extreme, take a look at the new Corvette ZR1X. 4 At the back, Ferrari's signature quad exhaust outlets more than hint at the Amalfi's performance potential. Ultra-slim taillight cut-outs and a wide diffuser are other visually appealing elements from this angle. 5 Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. That's 19 hp more than the Roma, and it cuts the 0-62 mph time down to 3.3 seconds. The transmission is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. If you want a V12 Ferrari, you'll have to look elsewhere. 6 Verde Costiera has been chosen as the Amalfi's launch color. This teal green is said to be 'inspired by the reflections of the sea along the Amalfi coast.' 7 The dual cockpit layout creates a clear separation between the driver and front-seat passenger. Ahead of the driver is a 15.6-inch digital instrument cluster, one of the largest such displays we've come across. 8 From this angle, we can see the 8.8-inch display ahead of the front passenger, which shows information related to audio, engine revs, and G-forces. 9 This interior is finished in Verde Bellagio, another green shade featured in the launch car. 10 The center tunnel is milled from a block of anodized aluminum and houses the gear selector gate and wireless phone charging pad. 11 The standard seats can be upgraded to comfort seats, offered in three different sizes. Seat massaging is available, and it's possible for two children to be accommodated in the back. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Christian Horner drops major hint over Max Verstappen exit as he reveals Red Bull contract clause
RED BULL boss Christian Horner has dropped a major hint over the future of Max Verstappen. Verstappen has been heavily linked with a move away from Red Bull after falling away in the championship standings. 4 4 The Dutchman had been eyeing a fifth World Driver's Championship title in a row at the start of the season, but now sits P3 in the driver standings behind McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. His gap to the top car is 61 points following a DNF at the Austrian Grand Prix after Kimi Antonelli crashed into the side of him on the opening lap. Verstappen is well known to have clauses in his contract which means he can trigger an exit if results do not meet expectations - with one clause stating he must be running in at least P3 going into the summer break. And Red Bull chief Horner has now lifted the lid on the future of the reigning world champion. Speaking to Sky Italy, he said: "We have a great relationship with Max. We know where we stand within the agreement, which will always remain confidential between him and the team... "We are just focused on performing. If things stay as they are, 100 per cent he will be with us next year." Paddock reports had suggested the 27-year-old was being linked with a stunning move to Mercedes. George Russell sits nine points behind his rival in the drivers standings, but is out of contract with the Silver Arrows at the end of the season. And when pressed for clarification on his Verstappen comments, Horner deflected the question by focusing on the situation of the British driver. He added: "It's impossible to say 100 per cent. "Is it clear George Russell will 100 per cent be at Mercedes next year?" Despite the rumours, Verstappen stormed to pole position on Saturday at the British Grand Prix. He was just over a tenth quicker than the second-quickest driver Piastri, with Norris, Russell and Lewis Hamilton completing the top five. 4 4

Rolls-Royce is winning over the rich with its Black Badge cars
The Rolls-Royce 'Black Badge' range may have realised its true 'dark alter ego' potential. Say hello to the Black Badge Spectre: at 659bhp, it's the brand's most powerful car, complete with an 'Infinity' button that sends the vehicle almost into warp speed. Black Badge is a sub-brand of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Launched in 2021, it features faster, darker and more dynamic traits, with dark alter ego being official Rolls terminology to describe the luxurious, silent, electrically powered Spectre now in front of me, with a starting price of about £350,000. Many other Black Badge cars will be enhanced to the tune of £100,000 or more, with an array of 'personalisation' for the well-heeled customer. Aside from offering top-of-the-line specs and customisation, Black Badge Rolls can be distinguished by their logo: a reversal of the R-R symbol, with silver letters on a black background, instead of the other way around.
