Priya Prakash Varrier recalls facing hatred after viral wink: ‘People felt I gained overnight what others worked years for'

Indian Express30-04-2025
There's no other expression better than 'an overnight sensation' to describe Priya Prakash Varrier's foray into the spotlight. Just an aspiring actor till the previous day, Priya's life changed dramatically on February 9, 2018, with the release of the video song 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' from director Omar Lulu's Oru Adaar Love, which was under production at that time. Her playful wink at the character Roshan Abdul Rahoof played won over millions of netizens' hearts, and the 18-year-old actor became a national crush almost instantaneously. Her popularity grew to such heights that Oru Adaar Love's makers reportedly changed the entire storyline to bring her character, who initially did not have much prominence, to the centre of the narrative, thus even sidelining the actual female lead character.
However, like any other trend, it took Priya Prakash Varrier too quite some time to shake off its lingering aftereffects and break free from it. Although she received opportunities to work in various major film industries in the country, including Bollywood, the actor recently admitted that the sensational wink, albeit beneficial for her at first, indeed affected her career as it created a sense of hatred towards her for many.

Mentioning that a false perception about her had formed among the public from the very beginning, Priya Prakash Varrier stated that this resulted in people feeling hostility towards her. Maintaining that this eventually snowballed into hatred, she revealed that this caused a shift in the attitude of both the industry and the general public towards her.
Watch Priya Prakash Varrier's 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' song here:
'Somewhere along the way, a preconceived notion was created about me that I am unapproachable, have an attitude, or demand a high remuneration. It might have stemmed from the hostility that came as part of the 'wink sensation'. People felt that I had achieved overnight what others struggled for years to attain. So naturally, questions like 'what did she do to get that?' or 'does she even deserve it?' started coming up, leading to a general sense of resentment against me. I can understand that,' she said during a chat with Cue Studio.
The actor added, 'But over time, that resentment turned into hatred. No matter what I did, that negativity persisted, and eventually, it began affecting my career. It might have slowly influenced how people and the industry saw me as well.' Last seen in director Adhik Ravichandran's Ajith Kumar -starrer Good Bad Ugly (2025), Priya Prakash Varrier is awaiting the release of Abbas–Mustan's 3 Monkeys in which she has played a key role alongside Arjun Rampal.

When John Abraham spoke about not having children; the actor has been married to Priya Runchal since 2014

John Abraham and Priya Runchal have been married for more than 11 years but they haven't yet planned to have a family. They're pet parents though and seem quite happy at that. In an old interview, John had addressed why they've not thought about having children. He had said earlier, 'Right now, I'm just concentrating on setting my systems right in my workplace'. He elaborated on his busy schedule, explaining, 'I have a football team — Northeast United FC — so [that is] one thing that I have on my head, and I have my production house, I also am doing films as an actor. There are lots of things happening right now in my life that are taking a lot of time.' He added, 'Once systems are in place, then you can look elsewhere. Right now, it's just about getting those systems right.' Meanwhile, earlier on Tara Sharma's show, John had further opened up on it and said, 'You can't plan too much but I think you must have children only if you're ready to be a hands-on parent. Otherwise, don't have children. You need to have children if you want to have the joy of parenthood and you want to bring up someone with a lot of love and care' John has always kept his personal life private and his wife Priya is often away from the limelight. He had once spoken about it and said, 'I think I've realized I'm pretty faulty. I'm probably not the perfect partner. I think Priya brings a lot of maturity to the relationship. A lot of sanity, a lot of stability, and she's a good person. Rarely do I find people in our industry who want to stand back. She's one who has chosen to stand back and say, 'Listen, I'm not interested in this space of hogging the limelight. I'd rather sit back and do some real work.'" On work front, John was last seen in 'The Diplomat' this year which got critical acclaim and also did decently well at the box office.

Abhishek Bachchan's co-star Priya Yadav recalls his rare gesture during ‘Kaalidhar Laapata' shoot: ‘He was incredibly warm and respectful'

Abhishek Bachchan is getting a lot of love for his recent release 'Kaalidhar Laapata' which released on OTT. Priya Yadav who played Gudiya, his sister in the film also got a lot of appreciation for her heartwarming character. In a recent interview, she opened up about her experience of working with him. For those not in the know, Priya was also seen in 'The Railway Men'. Talking about working with Abhishek, Priya said during a chat with News 18 Showsha, 'Abhishek sir was incredibly warm and respectful right from the beginning. He made sure I felt comfortable on set and treated every scene, no matter how small, with sincerity." Recalling a moment which made a huge impact on her, during the making, Priya said, "There was a close-up scene of mine, and even though he wasn't in the frame, he stayed back just to give me cues. That rarely happens. He even called me personally to ask if I wanted another take, just to make sure I was happy." The actress also had a similar experience with Kay Kay Menon . She said, 'KK Menon sir waited almost half an hour just to give one look in my close-up shot, even though he wasn't going to be seen. I feel really lucky to have worked with such grounded, generous actors — it teaches you so much, not just about acting, but about being a better co-actor." She also opened up on her character and said, 'So many people wrote to me saying Gudiya reminded them of a silent sister, a daughter who never complains, someone holding the family together. I think people aren't used to seeing such simplicity anymore — and that's exactly what made Gudiya feel so real.'

How a Tamil film with no stars beat Sitaare Zameen Par, Raid 2, Kesari in the list of most popular Indian films of 2025

On Wednesday, IMDb (Internet Movie Database) announced its list of most popular Indian movies of 2025 so far as the first half of the year came to a close. The list featured films releasing between January and June 2025, which saw the most visitors on the IMDb site. While several big films from across several languages featured in the top 10, a small Tamil film with no stars and a budget of just ₹35 crore managed to beat them. The David that beat several Goliaths Dragon starred Pradeep Ranganathan and Anupama Parameswaran. {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} According to IMDb, the list tabulated all the movies released in India between January 1, 2025, and July 1, 2025, that have an average IMDb user rating of 6 or higher with at least 10,000 votes. Ten titles were consistently the most popular with IMDb customers, as determined by the actual page views of the more than 250 million monthly visitors to IMDb worldwide. Vicky Kaushal-led Chhaava, the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, was at number 1 in the list, quite unsurprisingly. But the second spot went to Tamil sleeper hit, Dragon. The Pradeep Ranganathan-starrer coming-of-age comedy drama was made on a ₹35 crore budget and went on to gross over ₹150 crore at the box office. The film generated immense buzz upon its release and later OTT release, leading to such a high spot in the list. {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} Read More {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{^usCountry}} Dragon starred Pradeep in the titular role, along with Anupama Parameswaran, Kayadu Lohar, Mysskin, Gautham Vasudev Menon, K.
