Rookie shares lead

Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and PGA Tour rookie Cristobal Del Solar of Chile each posted a 9-under-par 61 to share the first-round lead at the RBC Canadian Open yesterday in Caledon, Ontario.
Olesen and Del Solar took full advantage of TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in the venue's PGA Tour debut. They own a one-shot lead over Cameron Champ.
Jake Knapp is alone in fourth at 7-under 63.
Del Solar birdied 10 of his first 16 holes to pass Olesen for the outright lead and threaten a score of 59. However, he failed to get up and down from the bunker at the PAR-4 17th hole and took his only bogey of the day. He missed a 15-foot putt for birdie for the outright lead at No 18.

Hawarden New Zealand-born Nicila Costello Attempts To Become The First Female Three-division Australian Champion

South Island-born Nicila Costello is a proud New Zealander who represents both New Zealand and Australia. She has already accomplished a great deal in her career, being a two-division Australian national champion. Now she attempts to make history to be the first female to win three Australian titles in three different weight divisions. If Costello wins, this would rival New Zealand's Mea Motu, who holds the record for female boxers with the most New Zealand national titles in different weight divisions, with four New Zealand national titles. Costello won her first Australian title in 2022 when she won the Australian Flyweight title against Natalie Hills. She would go on to win the Australian Super Flyweight title in 2024 against Sarah Watt, however, she would lose the title earlier this year against Brianna Harrison in March. Costello won both of her Australian national titles by TKO and KO. Costello comes into this fight very experienced with title fights, with nine out of her eleven fights in her career being title fights. She has won three of those fights, lost five and had one fight by a draw. Her losses, however, were against highly creditable boxers, including two-time division world title challenger Michelle Preston, WIBA world title challenger Brianna Harrison, WIBA World champion Jasmine Parr and world-ranked boxer Mai Soliman. As for her opponent, Hayley Finlayson has an amateur boxing background. She is a 2015 Australian national amateur championship silver medalist. She made her professional boxing debut in 2024. Her last fight was in April this year, where she defeated Ali Jensen. This will be her first title fight as a professional boxer. If Costello wins this fight, her next fight is already in negotiations for later in the year for a New Zealand return. Costello has only fought once in New Zealand in her professional boxing career, which would make her New Zealand return the perfect homecoming. Being New Zealand-born, she is very popular in New Zealand, with her last fight here selling out to come see her. Nicila Costello vs Hayley Finlayson for the Australian National Bantamweight title will happen at Mansfield Tavern, Queensland, Australia, on a Shannon O'Connell undercard. O'Connell is a four-time world title challenger. Unfortunately, this fight won't be televised in New Zealand.

Five tied for early lead at Evian Champs

Five women fired rounds of 65 to take the first-round lead yesterday at the Evian Championship, the fourth of five LPGA majors on the season. Americans Jennifer Kupcho and Andrea Lee, Australians Grace Kim and Gabriela Ruffels, and Leona Maguire of Ireland all share the lead at 6-under at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France. Despite the crowd at the top, Maguire could perhaps nevertheless claim day-one bragging rights after she made a hole-in-one as part of her round, acing the par-3 second hole with her tee shot from 150m. A stroke back from the leading bunch at 66 is Minjee Lee of Australia, who won the Women's PGA Championship in June. Two more strokes behind after rounds of 67 sits a group of nine that includes world No 1 Nelly Korda, defending champion Ayake Furue of Japan and another native of Japan, Mao Saigo, who won the season's first major at The Chevron Championship in April. Bogies blotted the day for New Zealand's world No 3 Lydia Ko, who shot a two-over 73 to be eight shots behind the leaders and tied in 76th place. Ko, who won the event in 2015, is now in danger of missing the cut. — Field Level Media / additional reporting APL

Scheffler voices doubts

Scottie Scheffler. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES One would imagine three-time major champion Scottie Scheffler would be desperate to continue American domination of the British Open and lift the Claret Jug for the first time this week at Royal Portrush. The 29-year-old is the bookmakers' favourite after a stunningly consistent season including winning the PGA Championship and during his pre-tournament press conference yesterday he spoke of his growing love for links golf. But when asked how long he celebrates his victories, an introspective Scheffler veered off into questioning what was even the point of being the best golfer in the world. "It feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for like a few minutes," he said. "It only lasts a few minutes, that kind of euphoric feeling." Scheffler has been world No1 for 112 consecutive weeks and has earned more than $US87 million ($NZ146.2 million) in prize money on the PGA Tour and says he loves living out his dreams. But he admits he has a daily wrestle for what it all means. "Is it great to be able to win tournaments and to accomplish the things I have in the game of golf? Yeah, it brings tears to my eyes just to think about. "That kind of sense of accomplishment is a pretty cool feeling. But at the end of the day, I'm not out here to inspire the next generation of golfers. I'm not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world because what's the point? This is not a fulfilling life. Scheffler has a 14-month-old son Bennett with his wife Meredith and said they remained more important than any golf accolades. • New Zealand No 1 Ryan Fox has been paired with 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama. Fox, who has two PGA Tour wins this year, is playing in his 25th major tournament. Fellow Kiwi golfer Daniel Hillier will join former Masters champion Zach Johnson and Englishman Daniel Brown when the Open tees off tonight. - Reuters/APL
