Roche to test if new drug can prevent Alzheimer's disease, Bloomberg News reports
The new late-stage study will target people who are at risk of cognitive decline and aim to slow down the emergence of symptoms or prevent them fully, the report said, citing a statement.
The new pre-clinical study is the third largest late-stage trial that the company has announced for its drug trontinemab, which uses an experimental technology called brain shuttle to ferry medicine past the protective blood-brain barrier, according to the report.
Rivals like Eli Lilly (LLY.N), opens new tab have been making progress in the complicated field of Alzheimer's recently with Lilly's Alzheimer's drug Kisunla getting recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) last week.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Roche did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.
Treatments for Alzheimer's approved so far, including Eisai (4523.T), opens new tab and Biogen's (BIIB.O), opens new tab Leqembi, and Eli Lilly's Kisunla, are designed to clear sticky clumps of a protein called amyloid beta in the brain. They also carry hefty price tags and the risk of serious brain swelling and bleeding.

BUDAPEST, July 28 (Reuters) - Mayflies on the river Danube in Budapest are swarming earlier and in greater numbers than usual this year due to low water levels and an unusually hot summer, filling the air along the riverbanks as they are drawn to the city lights. Hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of mayflies engage in a frantic rush to mate and reproduce before they perish within just a few hours. Mayflies live for less than a day after they hatch, and their abundance is closely connected to the health of the Danube. Danube mayflies usually start swarming in August, but this year it began in mid-July, and is expected to last for weeks. Researchers say their early appearance in huge swarms could be linked to higher temperatures. "We have observed that massive mayfly swarms occur in years when the water levels are particularly low," said Gyorgy Kriska, associate professor at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest. Earlier this month unusually low water levels disrupted shipping, opens new tab along the Danube, Europe's second-longest river. Low water means more sunlight reaches the riverbed, helping algae grow, which provide food for the mayfly larvae, Kriska said. Danube mayflies did not swarm for about four decades as the river was too polluted. They returned in 2012 when the Danube became cleaner due to the construction of wastewater treating plants, he added. The mayfly is a protected species, with the notional value of a single specimen being 10,000 forints ($30). As mayflies swarm upriver after mating, they can be confused by city lights or the shadows of bridges, causing them to crash on the riverbank instead of laying their eggs in the water. To help them as much as possible, Hungarian researchers invented and installed special blue lights on two bridges. "Our lights simply keep them here, ... they continue to fly in front of the lamp ... and crash into the water," Kriska said. "This way, we can ensure they stay above the water, and the next generation survives."

Ham salad brands recalled over listeria contamination fears
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health warning for Reser's Fine Foods Ham Salad and Molly's Kitchen Ham Salad over listeria contamination fears. According to a press release from the agency, the possible contamination was discovered when a Reser's, based in Topeka, Kansas, was found to have used a breadcrumb product that was already subject to a Listeria monocytogenes recall. There have been no reports of illness among consumers due to contamination. The agency advises anybody who has consumed the products to seek medical help immediately. The specific warning is for 12-ounce plastic tubs of 'Reser's Fine Foods Ham Salad' with expiration dates of 09/01/2025 and 5-pound plastic tubs of 'Molly's Kitchen Ham Salad' with expiration dates of 08/31/2025. The FSIS warning raises concerns that retailers and consumers may have the product in their refrigerators and freezers. Customers are asked to be mindful and refrain from eating the named products. But that's not always possible — or palatable—for foods that are made to be eaten cold. Because Listeria can survive under refrigeration, it's essential to clean and sanitize any surfaces, including refrigerator drawers and shelves, that may have come into contact with the products.
