Stephen A. Smith blasted by ex-ESPN colleague in scathing attack after new $100million deal

Daily Mail21-06-2025
Stephen A. Smith is arguably ESPN's biggest star, but not because he's the most prepared, according to one former colleague.
Jason Fitz, a former ESPN sports radio host who was laid off in 2023 and has since joined Fox Sports, claims the polarizing media figure is actually too busy to watch games.
'Stephen A. is one of the least prepared people I've ever worked with in my entire career,' Fitz told Memphis' ESPN Radio affiliate during a recent guest spot.
Smith, who recently signed a five-year, $100 million extension with ESPN, has faced criticism since being caught playing solitaire on his phone During Game 4 of the NBA Finals in Indianapolis. He's since claimed he was multitasking.
The controversy surrounding Smith only grew this week when the 57-year-old Bronx native claimed Memphis' notorious crime rate was preventing the NBA's Grizzlies from attracting top-level free agents.
'But there's an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don't feel it's the safest environment. I'm talking to the local authorities in Memphis,' Smith said. 'You've got to clean some of that stuff up because it's dissuasive to NBA players. They have talked about it. I know. They've told me.'
And it was that latest controversy that Fitz was responding to when he blasted Smith this week in Memphis.
Claiming to work 80 hours a week during his time with ESPN, Fitz admitted Smith 'is busier than I ever was.'
'We see him making content 24/7,' Fitz said. 'So, I guess my question to people in Memphis is: how much Memphis do you think he's actually absorbed? And I mean all of it. Memphis culture, Memphis basketball.
'What the hell does Stephen A. know about the city of Memphis? And the answer to that is only what his friends or his people on his phone, tweet him, or text him. That's all he knows. He is so separated from actual reality. What does he know?'
And Fitz didn't stop there.
Smith's content, Fitz argued, is rooted in stereotypes rather than first-hand information.
'Stephen A. walks and talks and lives and eats and breathes stereotypes,' Fitz said. 'That's all he knows… Frankly, he has to talk about the city of Memphis because my guy hasn't watched a single Memphis basketball game in probably three years.
'Stephen A. has a staff and info group that feeds him information so that he can have somewhat informed opinions, and they're usually not because he works too hard to actually watch any games.'
The West Tennessee city on the banks of the Mississippi has been plagued by gang activity with a whopping 398 murders in 2023 compared to less than 100 just 13 years earlier.
But as Memphis mayor Paul Young said in his response to Smith, 'violent crime is down significantly in 2024 and 2025.'
He went on to extend an invitation for Smith to visit Memphis, which the ESPN host accepted.
'Deeply appreciate your words and the sentiments that came with them,' Smith wrote on X this week. 'Progress is what life is all about and when it comes to Memphis -where some dear friends of mine reside − I wish for nothing less. The people deserve nothing less.
'So with that said, I accept your invitation to come to your city, as your guest. Let's make it happen. I'm looking forward to it.'
As for Fitz's criticism of Smith, it's not the first time sports aficionados have questioned the First Take host's expertise. One such incident popped up in August of 2024, when the self-professed Yankees fans discussed New York's Aaron Judge and his then-teammate, Juan Soto.
'Judge has Juan Soto batting behind him so they can't get around him… they've got to pitch to the brother because you have Soto waiting in the wings,' Smith said ESPN.
Smith, as countless baseball fans quickly recognized, was exactly backwards about the whole situation. It was Judge who hit behind Soto in the Yankees' lineup last season, thereby motivating pitchers to throw strikes to Soto in hopes of avoiding a walk and giving Judge the chance to drive in another run.

Manuel Neuer blames Gianluigi Donnarumma after Jamal Musiala suffers broken leg at Club World Cup

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has accused his PSG counterpart Gianluigi Donnarumma of recklessness after Jamal Musiala suffered a broken leg during their Club World Cup quarter-final in Atlanta. Musiala was injured in added time before the break following a collision in PSG's penalty area. As the 22-year-old rushed into a challenge with defender William Pacho, PSG keeper Donnarumma dived on to the ball and inadvertently rolled over Musiala's left leg, twisting it at an alarming angle. Bayern's medical team rushed on to the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly shaken, dropped to the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala who was carried off the field on a stretcher. PSG went on to win the game thanks to Desire Doue's late goal. Afterwards Neuer said: "It was a situation where you don't have to go in like that. That's risk-taking. He was prepared to accept the risk of injuring his opponent.' Neuer added: "I went to him and said, 'Don't you want to go and see our player?' It's a matter of respect, of going there and wishing the guy all the best. He then did it. Fairplay is always a part of it. I would have reacted differently." Donnarumma was clearly upset during the match and posted on Instagram afterwards: 'All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jamal Musiala.' But Bayern's director of sport Max Eberl was also critical of the Italy international. 'When I jump onto his [Musiala's] lower leg while sprinting, weighing 100 kg, there's a high risk of something happening,' Eberl said. 'I don't think he did it intentionally, but he also wasn't being considerate.' The Bayern manager, Vincent Kompany, said his 'blood was boiling' after losing Musiala to such a serious injury, which is likely to mean several months out of action. "I've rarely been so angry at half time, not against my players - I know there are much more important things in life, but for these guys it's their life. Someone like Jamal lives for this. He just came back from a setback and now this happens. You feel powerless. My blood is still boiling right now, not because of the result, that's football. But because it happened to someone that enjoys the game so much.' PSG vice-captain Achraf Hakimi said: 'I send him all my support. I hope he'll be back soon and we'll soon see him on the pitch again.'

Kylian Mbappe dedicates stunning scissor-kick to Diogo Jota as Real Madrid survive late scare to beat Borussia Dortmund in thriller after THREE goals in added time- and set up crunch semi-final clash with PSG

Kylian Mbappe scored an acrobatic scissor-kick to set up a Club World Cup semi-final showdown with his old employers Paris Saint-Germain and dedicated his celebration to the late Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Mbappe, who recently returned from acute gastroenteritis, was brought on as a substitute in the 67th minute after Xabi Alonso again opted to start one of Real Madrid 's own in Gonzalo Garcia instead. Real were already leading 2-0 when Mbappe was introduced, but Borussia Dortmund got a goal back in stoppage time through Maximilian Beier and that kickstarted a frantic finale at the MetLife Stadium. Mbappe's volley from Arda Guler's cross – and tribute to Jota in creating the number 20 with his fingers towards the cameras – followed as it appeared Real were indeed cruising through. However, while we were all watching the replays on the big screen, Dortmund were awarded a penalty and Real were shown a straight red card. Dean Huijsen had pulled back Serhou Guirassy when he was through on goal. Guirassy stepped up himself and scored to make it 3-2. Seconds later, Thibaut Courtois prevented this game from going to extra time with perhaps the save of the Club World Cup, denying Marcel Sabitzer with a remarkable stop while diving down to his right-hand side in the 10th minute of stoppage time. With PSG beating Bayern Munich earlier in the day, we will now see a semi-final between the 2025 Champions League winners versus Real, the 15-time conquerers of that European competition. Chelsea will face Fluminense in the other semi. This was only Mbappe's second appearance of the Club World Cup, having also been a substitute versus Juventus in the last 16. In his absence, and that of Endrick, Gonzalo Garcia has stepped up and then some. The 21-year-old Madrid-born forward – linked with Chelsea, of course – scored his fourth goal in five games in the United States to give Real the lead over Dortmund here. It was so simple, too, as he found the space he needed to tap in Guler's cross. In scoring, he took himself to the top of the Golden Boot leaderboard, level with Angel Di Maria of Benfica and Marcos Leonardo of Al-Hilal. This follows on from him scoring 25 goals in 36 games for Real Madrid Castilla – their reserve side – over the last season alongside the odd senior appearance. The MetLife Stadium's crowd was 90 per cent in support of Real and they went wild upon their side taking the lead in the 10th minute. It was 2-0 after 20 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold underlapped and sprinted on to a ball in behind. His cross evaded every man in yellow in the box as it trickled to the arriving Fran Garcia, who scored from eight yards. There was also Jude Bellingham for Real, but no Jobe for Dortmund, owing to the younger brother being suspended. The older sibling should have added a third for Real after a gorgeous dummy by Vinicius Junior left him with only Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to beat, but he dragged wide with his weaker foot. Like Bellingham, Vinicius then squandered his own opportunity to make it three when Real launched into a lightning counter-attack from a Dortmund corner. Kobel was still backtracking towards his box when Vinicius tried but failed to execute a lob. Really, he should have scored. In the 62nd minute, Aurelien Tchouameni curled one from 25 yards. Kobel was rooted, and then grateful when the ball crashed back off his crossbar. Mbappe was introduced after 67 minutes – to a loud ovation from the 76,611 supporters in attendance – alongside Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos. Vinicius, Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold were replaced in that triple substitution. Amid five minutes of stoppage time, Dortmund got a goal back through Beier's strike. Moments later, Real restored their two-goal lead with Mbappe scoring a scissor-kick at the back post from Guler's cross. Immediately from the restart, Dortmund were awarded a penalty as Huijsen fouled Guirassy, who converted to make it 3-2 as Real were reduced to 10 men. At the very end, Courtois produced a stupendous save, denying Sabitzer with remarkable reactions. After a breathless finish, it is Real who will face PSG in the semis.

Report: Grizzlies trade C Jay Huff to Pacers

July 5 - The Memphis Grizzlies are trading center Jay Huff to the Indiana Pacers for one second-round pick and one second-round swap, according to ESPN. Huff has spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets, and Grizzlies in his four-year NBA career. Last season, he established himself as a solid stretch five in Memphis, shooting an impressive 40.5 percent from deep. The 7'1" big man averaged 6.9 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 11.7 minutes per game. The Pacers gain a needed reinforcement in the frontcourt after they lost center Myles Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks in free agency. Huff adds depth behind current center options Isaiah Jackson and Tony Bradley. Huff, a member of the University of Virginia's 2018 national championship squad, has three years worth approximately $8 million left on his current deal; the final year is a club option. --Field Level Media
