EU to seek trade 'rebalancing' with China at Beijing summit

CNA15 hours ago
STRASBOURG, France: The EU will seek to rebalance economic ties with China, demanding it eases market access for European firms and loosen export controls on rare earths at a summit this month, the bloc's chief said on Tuesday (Jul 8).
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said overcapacity concerns and China's support for Russia's war effort in Ukraine will also be on the table at the talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen said Beijing was running the largest trade surplus "in the history of mankind" exporting vast amounts to the EU while making it harder for European companies to do business in China.
"If our partnership is to move forward, we need a genuine rebalancing, fewer market distortions, less overcapacity exported from China, and fair, reciprocal access for European business," she told lawmakers.
Beijing has sought to improve relations with the European Union as a counterweight to superpower rival the United States, but deep frictions remain over their economic relationship.
The trade deficit between China and the EU was a yawning US$357 billion in 2024.
Brussels is worried that a manufacturing glut propelled by massive state subsidies could add to it, and result in a flood of cheap Chinese goods undercutting European firms.
"China cannot rely on exports to solve its domestic economic challenges. Overcapacity must be addressed at its source, it cannot simply be offloaded onto global markets," von der Leyen said.
The commission leader, who will travel to Beijing with European Council President Antonio Costa, said the pair will seek to loosen export restrictions on rare earths – while Brussels also looks at "developing alternative supply resources".
The curbs have caused concern among businesses worldwide as China accounts for almost two-thirds of rare earth mining production and 92 per cent of global refined output, according to the International Energy Agency.
China's close relations with Russia have also been the cause of discord.
"China is de facto enabling Russia's war economy, and we cannot accept this," von der Leyen said. "How China continues to interact with Putin's war will be a determining factor for EU China relations going forward."
The summit is scheduled to take place later on Jul 24 to Jul 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the EU.

Boeing delivers most jets in 18 months with boost from China

[LOS ANGELES] Boeing said it delivered 60 aircraft in June, its best showing in 18 months that reflects improvements in its factories and the resumption of US jet exports to China. The US planemaker handed over 42 of its 737 Max models last month, the most since a near-catastrophe plunged it into crisis in early 2024. Eight of Boeing's deliveries went to China after US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping backed away from a showdown over tariffs. In all, Boeing delivered 150 aircraft in the second quarter, and 280 commercial planes during the first six months of the year, according to a statement. The manufacturer said it recorded 668 gross jet orders during the first half against 43 cancellations and conversions. The June surge put Boeing neck-and-neck with arch-rival Airbus, which delivered 63 aircraft in the month. The European planemaker recorded 203 gross orders in June, which included some of the commitments it won at the Paris Air Show. Boeing has lagged its competitor in the global duopoly in both sales and deliveries as it was buffeted by a series of crises this decade. But the momentum has shifted in recent months, with Airbus struggling to hit its production targets as it grapples with engine shortages and other supplier strains. The US manufacturer has begun to make progress in returning its factories to a steadier tempo. It's also cushioned by a surplus of inventory as a consequence of a strike in late 2024 and its decision earlier in the year to slow production to address quality shortfalls after a door-shaped panel blew out of an airborne 737 Max. However, Boeing is again in the spotlight after a 787 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed seconds after take-off last month, days before the Paris Air Show. Boeing cancelled public appearances by chief executive officer Kelly Ortberg as well as order announcements at the show out of deference to the crash victims. Boeing's June sales totals provided clues as to what might have been. The planemaker recorded 116 gross orders for the month, including 42 sales to an unidentified buyer or buyers for its 737 Max, and 30 orders for its 787 Dreamliner widebody to an unknown customer. Celine's new designer Michael Rider makes a strong start

When the first model came out in Michael Rider's debut show for Celine, it was clear Rider planned to respect his predecessor Hedi Slimane's legacy. Skinny jeans are a Slimane trademark and the opening look featured ultra-clingy denim, paired with white boots and a camel-coloured tailored jacket. If there was any doubt as to whether the lean jean is coming back into fashion, there needn't be now. Talking backstage after the show at Celine's headquarters in Paris, Rider said the jeans look was 'like something that was familiar but felt new right now, the right way to start'. The American designer added that when it comes to the different designer eras at Celine, several of which were echoed in the collection, 'I definitely did not want there to be a sense of erasure; it felt right to me to build'. Rider had a direct hand in forming one of those eras, having worked there under Phoebe Philo for nine years from 2008 before he became creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren. Many designers want to reference their house heritage, but when Slimane took the helm at Celine in 2018 he made a volte-face from the luxurious refinement favoured by his predecessor, Philo. Many so-called Philophiles were devastated at the loss of clothes that felt modern, thoughtful and feminist. But Slimane's designs were a commercial success, with annual revenues climbing from around €800 million (US$940 million; S$1.2 billion) in 2017 to €2.6 billion in 2023, according to analyst estimates. Rider takes over a considerably bigger house than he left in 2017 — Slimane added both menswear and fragrance — but he also joins at a challenging time for luxury. 'Celine, like other maisons in the luxury market, is affected, but the maison has exactly what it takes to emerge from periods of turbulence stronger: Through quality and driven by exceptional savoir-faire and creativity,' chief executive Severine Merle wrote via email after the show. 'There are still many territories left for us to explore.' Optimism was running high for Rider's debut, held on the eve of haute couture week in Paris. Some of the seats in the alfresco courtyard were arranged to form the 'Celine' logo underneath a giant Celine scarf, with guests clutching branded umbrellas to shield against the rain. The collection borrowed elements of Ralph Lauren's signature sporty prep in crayon-bright colours mixed with '80s blouson jackets and classic French tailoring. Block colours and clean lines were a foil to armfuls of coloured bangles and rows of rings. Trouser shapes ranged from ultra-skinny to wide tailored culottes, worn with flat Mary Janes and cardigans, and given a more opulent twist with excessive layers of gold necklaces and horn-shaped pendants. Barrel-leg trousers in tan and check came with cinched, pleated waists paired with oversized blazers and nonchalant silk scarves. There was also a dandy element in Chesterfield coats shown, in one example, in white with a white scarf neck top and embellished jeans. Coincidentally, it resembled one of the looks at Jonathan Anderson's recent debut for Dior, and there were other parallels suggesting a trend, such as elevated sweatshirts. It seems like a hybrid dandy bourgeois prep is very much in the fashion ether, offering an alternative to athleisure that takes barely more effort but has a lot more style. 'I think he's making clothes for this new cool girl,' said celebrity stylist Law Roach, who was in the audience. 'We have been seeing all this Y2K fashion and this feels newer and a little bit more modern — easy but not too much of a departure from what we know Celine to be.' Shoes included lace-up heeled shoe boots and Mary Janes as well as soft dance shoes that resembled the pair by Repetto that Serge Gainsbourg used to wear. However, the presence of boxing boots, some with Celine branding, felt a bit predictable as they are already an established trend. Bags are important for the house and alongside logo-printed flat totes, slouchy shoulder bags and huge leather sacks, Rider brought back the Luggage bag from the Philo era. This time, however, the zip resembled a smiley face. 'Having a sense of humour in the luxury space is actually a beautiful thing,' Rider said.
