Irish teen Dunne second in Formula 2 at Silverstone
Ireland's Alex Dunne has reignited his Formula 2 title charge by finishing in second place in the feature race at Silverstone. Dunne was second behind American Jak Crawford, who won his third race of the season. In wet conditions, GB's Luke Browning put in a superb drive to finish in third place from 12th on the McLaren development driver is now 14 points behind championship leader Richard Verschoor, while Crawford moved into second in the standings just six points behind the Dutch who impressed deputising for Lando Norris in opening practice at the Austrian Grand Prix, will drive for McLaren in the Formula E rookie test in Berlin on 14 July and the next round of Formula 2 takes place in Belgium from 25-27 there was disappointment for Northern Ireland's Fionn McLaughlin in the second British F4 race at Silverstone. McLaughlin, who was third in the reverse grid race on Saturday, led from pole position in the early stages. However, the Red Bull Junior driver suffered with a mechanical issue on Hitech car and the 17-year-old was forced to retire. The races were a non-points scoring round of British F4 and McLaughlin, who leads the overall and rookie championships, is back in action at Zandvoort in the Netherlands on 26-27 July. F1 standings after British GP as Lando Norris closes gap to Oscar Piastri
Max Verstappen will try to turn pole position into a race win at the British Grand Prix this afternoon after silencing home fans by seeing off McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in qualifying at Silverstone. Verstappen did not look to be in the hunt for first place heading into Saturday but he pulled a brilliant lap out of the bag to beat Piastri by 0.103 seconds with Norris third, 0.118 seconds adrift. George Russell took fourth for Mercedes, one place ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who had dared to dream of a first pole position for Ferrari, but ended up two tenths off the pace. Charles Leclerc qualified sixth in the other Ferrari. Verstappen was only fourth after the opening runs in Q3 at a gusty and overcast Silverstone, and complained his Red Bull was difficult to drive. However, when it mattered most the four-time world champion came from nowhere to take top spot - his first pole since Miami at the beginning of May.
