Kolkata gangrape horror: Students say 'Mango' was a predator shielded by power, had disturbing history of sexual violence
Monojit Mishra, also known as Mango, the main accused in the gangrape of a 24-year-old college student in Kolkata, reportedly had a long history of disturbing behaviour, including signs of psychopathy and a tendency towards sexual violence, according to his former classmates and juniors, as reported by TOI.
Students said Mishra had a pattern of making unwanted proposals to several female students, including the survivor, using the same line in Bengali: 'Tui amay biye korbi?' (Will you marry me?)
A pattern of abuse ignored?
Mishra had earlier been expelled from the college's Trinamool Chhatra Parishad unit in 2021. However, students claim he continued to roam freely on campus and used his influence to control WhatsApp groups and college information.
'He was a constant threat, especially to girls,' a third-year student said. 'We even gave a formal sexual harassment complaint to the teacher-in-charge, but nothing came of it.'
Students allege that Mishra morphed photos of girls and shared them, recorded intimate moments with women and circulated them among friends, and often body-shamed female students. Despite several complaints of molestation, harassment, extortion, and even assault, no strict action was ever taken.

Campus culture of fear
A first-year student said Mishra had power because of his links with the students' union. 'Those close to the union could get away with anything. They shared obscene jokes and photos in student groups all the time. We kept quiet because we were scared,' the student said.
Others recalled that Mishra had also threatened students who joined last year's 'Reclaim the Night' protest, a movement held after the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Co-accused also known faces
One of the co-accused, Promit Mukherjee (also known as Riju), had reportedly taken part in protests last year, ironically demanding the death penalty for the accused in the RG Kar case.
Another accused, Junaid, is from Howrah. His house was found locked on Saturday. Neighbours said they were shocked. 'It's disturbing to hear Junaid's name in this case,' said local resident Abbas Sheikh.

Puri: A day after Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi issued an apology to the devotees of Lord Jagannath for the 'unpardonable' negligence leading to the death of three persons in a stampede, the entire State administration was gearing up to ensure smooth conduct of the remaining rituals of Rath Yatra. The stampede took place near Shree Gundicha temple on Sunday during a ceremony related to the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities. The Gundicha temple is considered the aunt's place of the deities, where they stay for a few days during the annual festival. The Chief Minister's advisor and former DGP Prakash Mishra rushed to Puri and held discussions with various stakeholders to ensure a smooth conduct of the remaining rituals of Rath Yatra. Mishra was appointed as the advisor to the Chief Minister in January this year. Apart from serving as the DGP of Odisha, he has worked as the Director General of CRPF and NDRF. 'Now, we have to see how the remaining Rath Yatra rituals are carried out properly,' Mishra told reporters. Stating that the government has engaged all the 'experienced hands' after the stampede, Mishra pointed out that ADG Soumendra Priyadarshi has been in charge of overall police arrangements and he is an experienced person to handle such events. The new Puri Collector Chanchal Rana and new SP Pinak Mishra too have good knowledge about Puri temple affairs, he said. The first leg of the Rath Yatra - travelling of the deities from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple - was complete. Several other rituals of the festival will be conducted in the next few days. The administration anticipates a congregation of lakhs of devotees during rituals such as 'Sandhya Darshan' (July 4), 'Bahuda Yatra' or return car festival (July 5), 'Suna Besha' (July 6) and 'Niladri Bije' (July 8). 'We see a major challenge in the smooth conduct of the return car festival on July 5 when the three chariots will be pulled back to the main temple. Another event is on July 6 when the trinity will adorn Suna Besha (golden attire) on July 6. We anticipate a bigger crowd of devotees to throng Puri to witness the Lord's Suna Besha,' a senior police official said. This apart, senior bureaucrat Aravind Agarwal is assigned the job of overall monitoring of the Rath Yatra affairs. He is a former collector of Puri and has good knowledge of the Rath Yatra management, Mishra said. The Chief Minister's advisor appealed to the devotees to maintain discipline as all would get the opportunity to have 'darshan' of the deities. Meanwhile, Development Commissioner Anu Garg said she has been given 30 days to inquire into the stampede. 'I will soon visit Puri and take stock of the situation,' Garg told reporters in Bhubaneswar. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said, 'The Sunday stampede incident was due to negligence on the part of some people. The government has already taken action and others will face action after the Deputy Commissioner submits report.' Harichandan said that the Deputy Commissioner's inquiry will focus mainly on three points - why the stampede took place, who are responsible and what more needs to be done to avoid such incidents in the future. The Puri Jagannath temple functions under the Law department of the State. Following the stampede, the Odisha government transferred the District Collector and the SP of Puri and also placed two senior police officers under suspension on the charge of dereliction of duty. While the rituals at Shree Gundicha temple went on smoothly on Monday, senior bureaucrat and former Puri Collector Aravind Agarwal held closed-door meetings with various stakeholders, including servitors of the 12th century shrine. He also discussed with people having sufficient experience in Rath Yatra management. Agarwal has sought the blessings of Lord Jagannath to smoothly carry out the responsibilities given to him by the State government, an official close to him said. According to temple records, so far 17 persons on five occasions died due to stampede since 2006. While the highest number of six persons were killed on July 4, 2008, during Rath Yatra, four others died on November 4, 2006, during the Kartik Purnima day. Similarly, two persons each died during Rath Yatra on July 21, 2012 and July 18, 2015. The latest stampede in Puri took place on June 29, 2025 where three persons have been killed. However, this is the first time that a stampede occurred outside Shree Gundicha temple a day after the pulling of chariots. The devotees on Monday had a smooth 'darshan' of deities after the police made special barricade arrangements near Shree Gundicha temple after the stampede incident, officials said.

Bhubaneswar municipal official dragged out of office and assaulted, told to apologise to BJP leader
A group of men on Monday assaulted a municipal official in Bhubaneswar and dragged him out of his office during a weekly grievance hearing session, The Indian Express reported. The official, Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, alleged in his police complaint that six to seven unknown men entered his chamber and aggressively asked him if he had spoken to a Bharatiya Janata Party leader named Jagannath Pradhan. Sahoo told the men he had spoken to Pradhan on the phone earlier in the day. He alleged that the group then tried to drag him by his shirt collar into a vehicle, demanding that he go to the BJP leader and apologise, The New Indian Express reported. Bhubaneshwar Municipal Corporation officials held a day-long protest at the corporation office, seeking that the culprits be immediately arrested. Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil urged Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh to take stringent action against those involved. He said that the assault on a senior bureaucrat without provocation was demoralising. 'The officer was chairing grievance hearing on my behalf,' the municipal commissioner said, according to The New Indian Express. The police have arrested three persons – a corporator named Jeevan Rout and his associates Rashmi Mahapatra and Debashis Pradhan. Rout had been arrested in January 2024 as well for allegedly attacking an assistant sub-inspector. Pradhan said that the assault on Monday was unfortunate and that he knew two persons involved in the attack, The Indian Express reported. He said that the state's BJP government would not shield anyone and action would be taken against all those involved. Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik said on X that he was shocked on seeing the video of the attack. He urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to take exemplary action not just against the perpetrators, but also against the political leaders who allegedly orchestrated the attack. 'The people named by the officer in his FIR have behaved like criminals,' Patnaik said. 'If a senior officer is not safe in his own office, then what law and order will ordinary citizens expect from the Government?'

Navi Mumbai man locks himself in flat for 3 years after death of kin; found surrounded by garbage, human waste
Social workers recently rescued a former computer programmer who had isolated himself for years after he lost his parents and brother. Anup Kumar Nair, 55, was found in an unkempt condition, surrounded by garbage, food packets, broken furniture, and human waste at his Navi Mumbai home. According to a report in the Times of India, Nair was depressed and locked himself in his flat due to psychological trauma. Rescued by social workers under the Social and Evangelical Association for Love (SEAL), a Panvel-based NGO, he was surviving by ordering meals through food delivery apps over the last three years. Nair had reportedly cut off all contact with society, and was found with a severe leg infection. The report stated that Nair's parents passed away a few years ago, and his elder brother died by suicide nearly 20 years ago. His relatives attempted to contact him on several occasions but he avoided interacting with them due to trust issues. The incident came to light when a resident of the complex informed SEAL about the poor state of the flat. The team quickly gained access to the place and provided medical assistance to Nair. 'We, society members, had to sometimes persuade him to help us take his trash out. We also helped him to transfer the fixed deposit of his parents to his account,' his neighbour told TOI. Nair is now living at the SEAL ashram in Panvel. Opening up about his life, he said, 'I don't have any friends at present, and my parents and brother have already died. Due to my poor health, I cannot find a new job.' 'It is ironic how some citizens become extremely lonely and depressed in this crowded city, as they are unable to reach out for help. Fortunately for Nair, he was rescued, but there are countless others who simply perish inside their own locked flats, their bodies found days later,' chief patron of SEAL, Abraham Mathai, told TOI.
