Poland beats Denmark for first ever Women's European Championship win
LUCERNE, Switzerland (AP) — Natalia Padilla scored one goal and set up the others for Poland's first ever Women's European Championship win, 3-2 over Denmark in their final group game on Saturday.
Poland is appearing in the tournament for the first time and the Spanish-born Padilla got the country's first ever goal when she opened the scoring in the 13th minute, pouncing on a rebound to fire past Maja Bay Østergaard after Ewa SPajor's initial effort was blocked at the right post.
Padilla then crossed for Pajor to head in the second in the 20th.
Denmark suffered another blow five minutes later when captain Pernille Harder went off with what looked like a hamstring injury. Denmark was already without Emma Snerle, who suffered a head injury during Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Germany.
Denmark players paused during their pre-game warmup to pose with Snerle's jersey, while Danish fans also displayed a large banner wishing her well.
Denmark pulled one back through Janni Thomsen before the hour-mark when Kinga Szemik let her long-range effort slip through her fingers.
Martyna Wiankowska scored Poland's third against the run of play in the 76th when Padilla's attempted shot from Pajor's cross turned into a layoff for the substitute to fire in off the underside of the crossbar.
Forward Signe Bruun finally got her goal in the 83rd, setting up a nervy finale, but Poland held on for a momentous win.
Neither team had any hope of emerging from Group C after losing their opening games. Sweden defeated Germany 4-1 in the other match to top the group.

LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Grace Kim delivered one stunning shot after another in the Evian Championship, starting with an eagle to force a playoff and another eagle to beat Jeeno Thitikul on the second extra hole to make her first LPGA Tour win a major title. Kim, whose 2-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th in regulation gave her a 4-under 67, looked to be just as surprised as everyone else when she rolled in a 12-foot eagle putt to win the playoff. The 24-year-old Australian calmly placed her hand over her mouth and stood still before doubling over and breaking into a smile. On 18 in regulation, Kim blasted a fairway metal onto the green. Gooch closed with a 1-under 70 to finish at 8 under, a stroke ahead of Spanish star Jon Rahm (65). Rahm led Legion XIII to its third team title of the season. Chelsea's Cole Palmer wins Golden Ball as top player at Club World Cup
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer earned the Golden Ball as the top player at the Club World Cup after scoring three goals, including two in the 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final on Sunday. Palmer, a 23-year-old who joined the Blues from Manchester City two years ago, scored the game's first two goals and assisted on Chelsea's third goal by João Pedro. Palmer also scored in the 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Palmeiras. (AP) — Former NHL player Joe Pavelski won the American Century Championship on Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe, closing with an eagle to beat former pitcher John Smoltz by nine points in a wire-to-wire victory in the celebrity event. Pavelski had a 29-point round under the modified Stableford scoring system to finish with 73. He was second last year behind former tennis player Mardy Fish. 'I don't know what to say, actually,' said Pavelski, who turned 41 on Friday. 'But just an amazing week. This place is incredible. It means the world to me.' Pavelski earned $150,000 from the $750,000 purse. Smoltz had a 28-point round. 'I was trying to put heat on anybody, the top three,' Smoltz said. 'I was just trying to climb as many people as I could.' Country star Jake Owen was third at 62 after a 21-point day. Taylor Twellman, the former soccer player who shared the second-round lead with Pavelski, was fourth at 61. He had 17 points in the final round.
